AMD something something 4 cores.
AMD 6870.
But as far as AMD grafics drivers go pdx games like em other games not. So i switch sometimes. Maybe you could try the different drivers for nvidia.
Uhm but no seriously have you tried deleting the game (and it's folders in two or 3 places) and reinstalled it?
I think I'll try to run the game on a different hardware / distro tomorrow and see what happens.
Can you run other games?
Total War: ATTILA
Counter Strike Global Offensive
Dota 2
Besiege
(and some other smaller games)
None of those had any problem starting / running.
As far as I remember are the free drivers for Nvidia unfortunately quite bad. So you might need to check out the latest proprietary drivers. Maybe there is a PPA for that? Honestly I don't know, but a quick search on the net should help you out.
Mint shouldn't be the problem here, since it's very similar to the officially supported Ubuntu.
CPU and RAM look very good too.
edit: If you are unsuccessful consider opening a thread in the Paradox forum. I suspect that the chance to get an answer from the devs there is higher.
Dang, i thought for sure it was related to my hd6870, because as long as i use the free drivers i don't see the arrows from offensive lines and i think my trees are pink. Same in Stellaris, no empire color spread. Only if i use the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ fglrx drivers, i get those "features" but then i can't play doto with a consistent framerate.
Well at least HoI4 helped with my dodo addiction...
But back to the point, is there anyhting else special about your system? I am even using the gnome desktop right now.
According to /proc/cpuinfo my CPU is a "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1240 V2 @ 3.40GHz" and I've 32GB RAM. Nothing too weird I assume. That's why I think that OP's problem has to do with the graphics drivers.
Today a colleague told me, he had the same problem with Stellaris. As soon as he used a 16.04 base that game started to work.
Would be kind of weird as Ubuntu 14.04 is the supported distro, but as soon as I have enough spare time I'll do an parallel install of Mint 18 and test it there.
The other reason would be that questions about Linux are so seldom around here i don't want to fragment the knowledge further, even risking derailing the thread and antagonizing OP.
Oh and speaking of you OP, the paradoxplaza forums are usually a better place to find help regarding tech issues that are not superficial.
TLDR:
Install the nscd package.
Long description:
Installing Linux Mint 18 didn't solve the problem, but after some testing I found out, that my nfs4-stored user-homes were part of the problem.
User account-information is distributed by an LDAP-Server. My client is using nslcd to get all user-entries from the server.
Before crashing the hoi4 executable tried to load many libnss_* libraries (checked with strace), so in desperation I tried to install nscd to allow caching of user-entries. This seems to solve the crash at startup and the game finally starts.
PS: the very same segfault happend while starting Civilization V aswell. That game also works after applying the fix.
