Three months ago I had to go abroad because of a assignments at the Client's main office in USA. There a large number of ABCDs and NRIs were employed too.
As a personal rule, I never talk politics at work place or even my colleagues because Politics tend to make working atmosphere very hostile and awkard and also I feel mixing persnol politics and work hours is quite unprofessional.
But, at my clients office -there is this ABCD who has really was a headache for me for the 2 weeks I was there.During lunch, one day I accidently revealed that I voted for Modi in 2014.
The ABCD went fucking berserk after that.Complete insult flinging abuse fest-He started saying how I was a fascist for voting Modi, how I support 2002 by voting Modi, How [I wont name the religion to not derail this thread] being in majority should be secular.
He did not say all of this together but used to keep dropping it in small amounts at agaiar intervals.
When I told him that I wasnt comfortable discussing politics at work, he went off on a weird tangent that People like me were the real reason why his Parents left India.
I pointed out that he has never come to India even once in life except for a few weeks every 2-3 years.
Then he said some stupid misinformed shit - like NRI money runs India, without NRI influence no FDI would come, that India needs to up its game and only then he will think of returning to India again.
Now I would not have cared if a stupid Dumb american ABCD was the only idiot in my team, but a lot of NRI green carders were supporting his stupid shit too by agreeing everything he was saying.
The NRI would interject with dumb stuff in front of my american coworkers that India should do this and this to progress, or say stuff like "This is the problem of India.........."
Now The company is sending me back to The office in US next month again. How do I deal with this dumb shit

Report to HR

If it's an American based company the people there are going to anyday get preference over some Indian who shows up once a year or so. Besides if this is a typical tech company saying you voted for Modi is like saying you voted for Trump.

Don't be naiive. So if Op was a girl whose being harassed that's going to be passed on too?. Man don't project your inferiority complex as if it's life advice.
[-]TheComingOfTheGeeks 4 points
If OP is a girl, reporting to HR is the best option.
As a guy, he needs to phrase it properly - like use political pressure and words like that to have an effect.
[-]Aditya1311 2 points (1 children)
Understand the situation here, oh but first pleasea also understand that sexual harassment is a MUCH bigger deal. Something as trivial as a few political statements is not the same, it's comparing apples to fucking nuclear weapons.
Secondly. Please analyse the facts of the situation and consider expected outcomes. OP visits this office six weeks a year. OP is in India rest of the year. The annoying ABCDs/NRIs? They live in the same place as the HR guys and the upper management who make the real decisions that matter, e.g. if OP will continue to have a job or remain on the project (I'd kill for a job that gave me six weeks in Tokyo every year). They live in the same places, their kids go to the same schools, they attend barbecues and parties and things. In short the relationship between said ABCDs and client is much deeper than between client and OP.
So OP complains to HR. HR looks into it, and best-case outcome of this issue will be that the desis get a reprimand for talking about politics at work. OP gets justice boner. Now a reprimand for this sort of thing is no big deal in most corporates, but it's still not fun to have HR talk at you in a meeting, it is extremely not fun regardless of the actual severity of the matter. It's sort of a baseline extremely not fun state that starts with being pulled up for say dressing inappropriately escalating to flagrant sexual harassment or fraud. Political arguments or discussions would be perhaps a few notches from the bottom. So you understand that it's not a fun experience and if anyone did it to me over something as trivial as a political difference I'd be inclined against that person to say the least.
Fast forward two weeks. OP has boarded plane (Emirates if he's lucky, AI if not) and come back to Bharat Mata. Desi(s) (assuming at least a few of them are conniving enough and hold enough of a grudge) get together back in USA, thinking "Ab dekhenge bhonsdiwale". They start by casually mentioning how horrible Narendra Modi is and what sort of atrocities he's done. They'll be talking at lunch or something and someone will bring up how Modi was responsible for the death of thousands of Muslims and someone will be like hey have you seen this video, look how brutally Muslims were killed in Gujarat. Look how he appointed this man who by the way advocates digging up dead Muslims and raping them as the Chief Minister. And it's more than likely Client's HR and management are typical Americans with a vague idea of India. Before long OP will be seen as something equivalent to a supporter of literally Hitler, a man who daily orders the deaths of hundreds of Muslims and is making India a mass surveillance state. If they skim randia only they will get fifteen million things with video backup.
So then what happens. At the first possible opportunity Desis will push the client to get rid of OP for whatever flimsy reasons they can dream up (this is not particularly difficult to do). Indian consultancies are ass-lickers to a fault and will most likely acquiesce.
End result: OP is at the very least kicked off this project for spurious reasons, if he's somewhat unlucky ends up with just an average performance review. With really bad luck and particularly vindinctive desis he gets a bad performance review and put on the bench or something.

Tell the dumb shit that he is not an Indian and that his privileged ass can never understand what it is to live here and that his parents left for personal gains and not because of the 'big bad India'. Also assert your personal rule around the NRIs who are probably frothing at their mouth for that green card.
[-]human_cat_hybrid 4 points (2 children)
hmm, I agree with you completely. But aren't personal gains related to 'big bad india'? I mean it's the stupid people of India that make it unhabitable. Getting a chance to get outta this shitty country is both a personal gain as well as a consequence of it's shittiness.
[-]tan_ay14 17 points
Your opinion man. I personally don't find the 'shittiness' uninhabitable. But that's just my opinion because of being born in a more fortunate part of India.
[-]markivswoodshed 11 points (1 children)
'Shitty' country that is growing faster than ever and is seeing tangible improvements in every aspect compared to previous generation? You're not giving India fair credit for what we've achieved in spite of circumstances.
You people need some hope and optimism in life. Go to Kenya or Nigeria, you shall know what true desperation is. Most of them would gladly move to this 'shitty' country of ours.
You want to leave India for personal gain, fair enough. Your choice. But pretending like everyone else is stupid and that is making you miserable is just dishonesty. You would have moved even if we were in a better condition than we presently are.

Lung cancer isn't the only cancer you know, USA is right up there in top10 for cancer of all kinds.
And it is also Top 10 in Lung cancer whereas India is not to be seen in Top 20.
and 3 cases ? Son you need more reading, don't pull data out of your ass, it stinks.
You are like the epitome of the type of fool who just buys into stereotypes and media lies. Carry on being ignorant.
USA has less cases of Lung cancer because - Population, USA still has higher shootings, Homicide, Cancer, Rape rates than India. India has lower rates but more case because again - Population.

He is in fact an Indian. The thing is, since he is in the US, he understands better what is wrong in India and is trying to help through money. And there are many things wrong with India for a fact. This doesn't mean he doesn't love India, just that there is no reason to go back. Your anger is unfounded and ignorant of a greater worldview only an NRI has. NRIs have both experience as Indians, as they lived in India, and as world citizens.

Honestly, in America, almost no one discusses politics in the office, you've come across an individual who clearly thinks otherwise.
Unlike India where people talk about everything from the colour of the crap they took to their colleagues personal lives.
In America the work culture is quite adamant about not mixing personal and professional lives.
[-]willyslittlewonka 2 points
Exactly. You don't even talk about politics at all if you can avoid it unless it's with someone you're close to.
Maybe this ABCD should learn more about US culture instead of lecturing people on a country he knows nothing about.
[-]kaoticreapz 16 points (3 children)
I would have thought it'd atleast be an NRI who'd have an issue with Indian politics. Why does that ABCD care when he's never even gonna get influenced by local Indian politics in any case?
[-]admin9gag 22 points (1 children)
Plus they aren't even Indian. They are American.
[-]thisisnotmyrealun 13 points (2 children)
Racially they are Indian and that kinship can't ever disappear although with that fools I wish it could.
They're a blight to the race.
But really this is why I hate desis; they have a fanatic hatred for India & and know next to nothing about it except racist and biased propaganda they've read from British texts and bullshit media.
[-]SouthieSaar 3 points (1 children)
If s/he has American or any other citizenship, they aren't Indian anymore. Just because they are of Indian origin means nothing. They willfully returned the Indian citizenship, so they should be on their way and shouldn't be linked to us.
[-]thisisnotmyrealun 1 points
no piece of paper can erase culture or race.
[-]karrieVal -6 points
This is not a hatred for India, just the realization of India's problems that have become more acute outside of India.
[-]south_blues 12 points (1 children)
Most likely they aren't sure of who they are. People with an identity crisis tend to be like this.
All the other Americans would have called them Indian their whole lives, so maybe they decided to identify as one despite no connection. So they absorb both good and bad.
It's common on Reddit as well. Random person with no idea of the country of their origin, comments on it despite not living there.

People with weak roots take a very exaggerated form of identity as a form of compensation. You see this in the US with all the freakout at Halloween, with the costumes and cries of "cultural appropriation" etc. Some black people even think dreadlocks is a "black thing" (except that Celts and other European tribes have been using it for millenia, way before any meaningful contact with Africans).
The same dynamic holds for these people. It's what happens when you don't really feel like part of the mainstream yet your ancestral roots are weak, so you become stuck in a netherworld which can be deeply uncomfortable for some people.
You see the same dynamic with some mixed-race people, many of them have significant identity issues and above-average suicide rates etc.

What I found most interesting in your post is that many of your colleagues agree with him. So, we've established that at least one block of people support him.
Now the real question that you should be asking yourself: is it worth it to antagonize a group of my colleagues? Is the misinformed opinions of this desi dude really worth the potential blowback?
Here's some kadvi dava. Go to him and tell him that you've been thinking about what he said and that you now completely agree. Disavow your vote for Modi. Nod along to what he says.
If I'm right, he's being a badmash fella because he feels offended by your BJP vote. If you take away the impetus and deny him any satisfaction from harassing you then his need to discuss politics with you will hopefully also disappear.
Of course, I don't mean actually change your opinion. Feel free to vote or support however you want. But tactically keeping your true opinions on the down-low is a life skill, unless you want to make this issue the hill you want to die on.
If you absolutely cannot live with him and don't want to bend your neck, you can go to HR. This is the nuclear option, however, and if he has as much support as you describe then the ultimate victim of HR might end up being you!
[-]TheJinnah 12 points (3 children)
Looks like you are a correct.
The chutiya ABCDs and their band of ass licking NRIs really make my blood boil.
But there is already a running joke in my company that "HR works to protect the company from the employees and not the vice versa".
Looks like I will have to just try and ignore them during myb2 weeks there.
[-]neoazn 6 points (1 children)
"HR works to protect the company from the employees and not the vice versa"- isn't a joke. It is mostly why companies have HR departments.
Going forward, just never discuss politics in the workplace. I've gotta say though that I'm impressed by your mature attitude and ability to see the bigger picture. I wish you luck with your future endeavors!

It's the same situation at lot of leftist places in India too. They can't take it that others disagree with thier opinion. They don't see their own dictatorial ways and instead call others Fasict and Nazis.
Just complain to HR.
If you say that you have changed your opinion about Modi he might force you to take part in Hillary rallies.

Most NRIs I have met in North East US are self hating and India phobic. Gujju NRIs won't even talk to FOB(Fresh of the boat) Indians. Generally, people, especially NRIs living on East/West coasts love to pass judgments and mock Indian or other cultures due to stereotypes of American pop culture and media. These very group of people who are mostly likely to vote for Democrats are likely to criticize you.
I'm sure ABCD who criticized you is a Democrat. I have seen ABCDs overwhelmingly support Black Lives Matter but when it comes to Hindu issues(which Democrats hardly care), they refuse to do anything. Democrats didn't strongly support Indian American fight against University of California's attempt to revise Indian history as South Asian history and remove references to many Hindu rulers. Democrats didn't give a fuck.
These ABCDs are extremely India and Hindu phobic. Some of the ABCDs I have met still have beleive in old Indian stereotypes. I even questioned a good ABCD friend why he's going to India to help poor people when there's so many poor Americans to help in Camden, Memphis,Detroit,St. Louis, Oakland. Turns out he'a going to India because that will give him good credit for his class(nothing but good old Indian poverty tourism). Many ABCDs who are culturally Americans and have no roots to India think like an ignorant American - India depends on outsourcing, India has 90% of poor people, India is very unsafe... so many crimes. When I point out the US homicide rate or rapes at US university campuses, they STFU. Interestingly, I have met more Americans who hold a contemporary/positive image of India than many entitled NRIs...
Bonus: If you want to date an American or ABCD, date someone from Mid West or Southern US. They won't judge you or stereotype or mock Indian/Hindu culture, unlike entitled ABCDs living on the East/West coasts. This is supported by dating research - For an Indian guy, it's harder to date ABCD/American living on the coasts than it is to date ABCD from the Mid West/Southern US due to above reasons..
[-]markivswoodshed 20 points (2 children)
Yeah completely agree with the poverty tourism part.
I met some idiots (mostly ABCDs) from UCLA who were on a trip to do social service in India. In a town in Himachal Pradesh, where state provided healthcare and education is quite okay. They were expecting kids to be malnourished and illiterate, but the kids there are quite healthy and do fine at school.
I asked them why not go to districts in India where there is an actual problem of malnutrition and illiteracy, they said "We also wanted to enjoy the scenic beauty of Himachal." And when asked why not go to districts in USA where public schools are functioning poorly, they said "We want to connect with our Indian roots."
They only handed out gifts and posed for photographs will small children. Rest of their trip was spent going to tourist places and smoking weed in their expensive hotel, not interacting with anyone outside their group. So much for getting in touch with your roots.
I mean do what you want to, but drop the pretence.
[-]USpolitics2017 7 points
Couldn't agree more.
Next time you meet an ABCD.. show them this
US has the most expensive Healthcare in the world https://www.statista.com/chart/8658/health-spending-per-capita/
Income Inequality in US. It's huge compared to other developed countries. US is one of the most unequal countries in the world. https://m.imgur.com/XEkKVG0?r

Of course NRI remittances contribute to indian economy. Our hard working brothers and sisters send back more money from west Asian countries than Europe or usa combined.
[-]Chutiyapaconnoisseur 3 points
Not as much anymore, there's been a significant slump in the last few years in the Gulf. But even when you add all remittances up, from all places, as a percentage of GDP it's quite marginal. It does help with the CAD, though, so that's a nice bonus.
[-]metaltemujin 4 points
See, our country has its faults which are glaring for any outsider, even if we as citizens work around it and are involuntarily blind to it.
That being said, I am also sorta like a fresh off the boat on a temp visa. I have found most ethnic indians who have been here (Australia) for a while quite unsavoury.
  1. A lot of them hold cognitive dissonance-isque views about India, they sorta try to flaunt their culture but usually bad mouth india.
  2. Even the Sikhs are semi-khalistani types when Indian Sikhs themselves have moved past that. I am not even in canada/us and yet I find them.
  3. They is a great jealously and negativity towards how much others make, and more so regarding their PR/Citizenship oppourtunities.
  4. A lot of desis go to almost any extent to get PRs - got medical doctors working as nurses, engineers in odd jobs, etc just for PR. Some even try to screw with u if you are much better placed - like it's such freaking competitive exam.
  5. I haven't met ABCDs here so can't say much.
I could go on, but you get the drift.
IMO, just don't talk much, get your job done and leave. Try to understand that NRIs and ABCDs are not indians, so don't treat them like you expect loyalty.
You can easily assume they hold views as of a vocal Pakistani citizen about India (or Indian government).
ABCDs know nothing about India except what they see through media or through their rose tinted glass (just like how much you may know of Syria or Germany). Their opinion is worthless, just smile and walk away.
NRIs are a different breed altogether - they are those adaptable people who have done whatever it takes to move out. Although it's a popular opinion on /r/india that they are the best among us, but I'd say they are the most adaptable among us and did what it takes to leave. It could be a gawar from punjab/bhihar who joined some odd course to eventually lead to a pr or an iitian. Both hold a similar regressive view about India, nothing to be surprised about. A lot of them want to enjoy their sexual freedom in the new countries.
TBF you'll find a lot of these people parrot opinions or views like they know what's best for India.
Like other suggest, report to HR or just avoid sensitive conversations with such people.
[-]Gymplusinternet 2 points
Just ignore everything or zone out and concentrate on your job. Arguing with others is not gonna be good since you are new there
