The 2% guideline is a strong suggested commitment that was part of NATO from the start. It was an honor system among friends and Germany among others shafted us.
The idea of not mandatory made sense because we wanted countries to stand together against threats but didn't want to have to drop someone that couldn't afford it. Don't worry, Germany can afford it and others can too.
So sorry lad, 2% is their agreed fair share.

 

You sound like a selfish socialist. You want everyone else to do all the work and you should only have to reap the benefits because well someone else can afford it. The guideline says PAY 2%. Germany pays around the lower half of 1% because they just don't feel like it. They say it's not important to them so why do it?
So I say pull all of our troops out and remove ourselves from NATO. Let Germany handle Germany and we will handle the USA. Then Germany will decide if it thinks 1.15% of its GDP is enough to make itself feel safe without its American safety blanket. Now there's no reason for us to argue.
