The path from liberalism to any form of communism is a fragile one. Beliefs must be challenged in a certain order. I.E. start with anti-capitalism, introduce socialism, then move onto to Marxism and its descendants. Some are ok with gulag jokes right at the start, but many won't be. So while this may be an effective tactic for Nazis (mainly because their entire worldview is simple enough to be expressed in meme form), as a leftist recruiting tool memes will require a precision and order entirely antithetical to their nature.

No one needs to joke about gulags, merely point out to the liberal the existence of state level prison systems.

I mean memes can be used like a propaganda poster so I don't see why not.

I agree with you: memes can be a great form of propaganda, specially with youth people. Maybe not gulags and all that tankie memes, I guess thats something more of a joke between communists (?). But also you have to use this kind of propaganda carefully, in a way that encourage a high school student to become interested in marxism, and not just in the joke that is the meme itself.

I love seeing people Tumblr reblogging shitposts (Tumblr creates some real artisan shitposts at times) that reference hating the bourgeoisie, seizing the means of production, pointing out rampant exploitation under capitalism, etc because it's seriously made some of my friends ask me about what it means in a larger spectrum. It's a great starting point.

Tankie memes are great for agitating, though. Like a picture of uncle Joe or a poster saying "Chairman Mao did nothing wrong" people will get offended and then inevitably do some research and become FULLY AUTOMATED

I think memes can be more effective for introducing communism to people than, for example, showing them a 500 page in-depth economic criticism of capitalism but they must remain relatable, linked with the real world and appeal to people's pre-existing anti-capitalist tendencies. What I mean by that is that there is no reason someone would support capitalism if they understood it's intricacies and the effect it's had on the world, but for someone to have a good understanding of capitalism and communism requires hours of study. That is why people must be agitated in order to have the motivation to study and I think memes could serve as a good gateway.

I know that in Albuquerque, the PSL attended a mock debate at a local high school with members from all the other major political parties. The students overwhelmingly voted for La Riva based solely on the platform and straightforward answers given during the debate. Several students went on to join the PSL and got involved afterward.

You don't need to give them memes to earn their support. I think they can be good propaganda, but much of them require at least basic understanding of what communism really is - something the US actively tries teach the opposite.

Just give them hard hitting facts about your platform and the failures of other political parties.

Well, I became a Marxist this year entireley because I saw some dank socialist memes, did some research, and realized communism made a lot of sense. The same thing happened to more than a few of my friends too, So just from my personal experience, I'd say memes are pretty effective at converting people to the left.

In my liberal days, I was more interested in memes communists used amongst themselves rather than ones that were shown to me. Personally I think it would come off as far too much of a "What is up, fellow kids?" move to include them as part of a presentation.

TURN YOUR DREAMS INTO MEMES INTO SEIZURE OF POLITICAL POWER!

I like memes as much as the next guy but at their heart, they are symptoms of the reductionist viewpoints that most people conform to. Socialism will be reached through dialectic analysis and direct action regardless of what form our propaganda takes so, as a matter of principle, I think memes should stick to being used as little packets of specific identity culture used amongst ourselves rather than vehicles for socialist thought.

And really, isn't every meme with any political leaning, even neutral, propaganda in itself? And any propaganda in itself just a meme that hasn't quite taken hold and been designated as such?

Let's get dialectic.

Socialism will be reached through dialectic analysis

But you cannot just put a volume of Hegel in someones hands and teach them, you need to spark an interest for the people to do it. Memes are doing a great job in that field. So, UPHOLD THE MARXISM-LENENISM-MEMEISM

Let me give you a piece of advice: one of the most important debates for young people is about "traditions" and social liberties. You have to focus on the marxist progressism and show why the liberal progressism just gives illusions to opressed people.

the memes on this sub pretty much made me go from a socdem to socialist (Thanks, lads). the memes are oversimplified, which is great for those curious, and seems friendly. the oversimplification makes you want to go look deeper into the subject.
