So in high school I used to do a fair bit of mountaineering through my school's outdoor program. The program leader was this goofy 50-something guy who was chalk-full of stories of his exploits. When we were in Alaska, he shared this gem:

"About 10 years ago I was set up in a campground below some peak in the Alps. I was with two other guys and we had to wait a few days because some other friends of ours were going to go climbing with us, but were still finishing another expedition. So we spent our days in and around the campground and eventually befriended some Frenchmen who were also waiting for other members of their climbing party to arrive. Now this guy was great. He was very eccentric and loved to use English idioms, but he translated them literally using an English dictionary. Early on we were talking about certain peaks we had summited and I told him about Rainer. He responded with 'Oh, Pierre, Rainier eez like...slice of pie. Zere eez nosing to eet' I was a little confused, but then it dawned on me he meant 'piece of cake.' So the next day we had dinner with the Frenchmen and for dessert I gave them Jolly Ranchers, which they had never had before. The days went on and finally the rest of the guys in our group arrived, so we had one last dinner with the Frenchmen. After the dinner the French guy goes, 'Pierre, you must tell me where I can get zees...gay cowboys' I just began to laugh and started to say 'well you can go to New York and go down 6th avenue' but then I realized he had done his French version of the name 'Jolly Ranchers.'"

I now always call Jolly Ranchers, Gay Cowboys.
