The best way to explain it.
[–]whodoesntlikesushi 63 points64 points65 points  (29 children)
I'm sorry I'm terrible with computers but I'm not understanding what the rd part means
[–]TheGuyAboveMeEatsPoo 81 points82 points83 points  (25 children)
You ever watch Futurama where bender has a night mare in binary, and freaks the fuck out because he thought he saw a 2? Something similar. The sever did something it isn't supposed to be able to do.
[–]MattLyte 35 points36 points37 points  (22 children)
What does rd reference though
[–]Haram_Imam 45 points46 points47 points  (16 children)
DNS requests can either be "recursive" or "non-recursive". Client applications (such as Internet browsers) typically requests that the DNS server performs recursion for them by setting an RD (Recursion Desired) flag in the request packet. This is a recursive request. Client applications do this both because they do not posses the ability to resolve domain names themselves, and also to take advantage of centralized caching on the DNS server.
However, when a DNS server sends requests to other DNS servers as part of the recursion process, these requests are typically non-recursive (the RD flag is not set). That's a general definition.
Basically, the client sends that request to the server, but the server never returns that request to the client (it doesn't need to). But try explaining that to a liberal and they will call you racist.
[–]SCV70656FL 12 points13 points14 points  (3 children)
The biggest reason to never have a Recursive DNS on NON-LOCAL machines is it opens you up to two of the biggest types of attacks:
[–]Haram_Imam 5 points6 points7 points  (2 children)
True, but now you're complicating it more. I tend to leave it as "Well, it doesn't have to so it won't" because that tends to satisfy them, and if they ask more questions you can elaborate. It is technically true, though very simple.
But I guarantee you saying that (not to have Recursive on non-local machines due to attacks) to someone that uses a smartphone for Instagram will make them glaze over and pass-out.
[–]SCV70656FL 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Ahh that is true. I guess it just sticks with me as I am helping my Brother in law study for his CCNA so I find this stuff pretty interesting.

Hijacking.
We need our most powerful austists to write a litter to Trump, Nunez and Gowdy explaining this clearly and comprehensively
How to make this a proper happening: Writing a letter to Nunez and Gowdy explaining who TeaLeaves is, what he's caused and your evidence of forgery. Needs to be clear, concise and comprehensive, no sperging out. Just explain the facts and the implications. Also send this letter to every media outlet and pundit that would cover it.
Some brave, well spoken autist needs to get onto this
[–]hog_masterUSA -2 points-1 points0 points  (3 children)
I'm with Alex Jones on this one, Autism shouldn't be normalized. That's what the led tries to do, and I know it's all in fun here and joking, but in a way by saying things like that you're essentially acting like the dems, trying to normalize something that isn't normal.
Look at the Alex Jones sesame (or pervert) street video on the new autistic character they added.
Also, why does it need to be an autistic person? I'm capable of explaining this, and I'm sure most second year Cs majors would be able to as well. I'm just not following this here.

Well recursion has always been a racist idea anyway. :-D
[–]sryii 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
So wouldn't this be possible to happen because even though they don't need to send a recursive request they could anyway? I guess what I'm getting at is some people are saying this is impossible where as isn't just really unlikely but still possible?
[–]Haram_Imam 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
It's possible in the same way they could have 0 password protection for anything on their servers is possible. Or how a car with Trump could wreck through your front window right now and say "Get in, we got a wall to build" possible. The thing is, this is a very elementary (for sysadmin stuff) thing that would not be allowed on the server of a financial institution, and if it were, it would almost assuredly be exploited as it would be a low-level attack.
It looks much more like there was a third party that tried to spoof server logs and got it wrong. Now, who do we know that would do something like that?
[–]Feather147CA 39 points40 points41 points  (4 children)
Recursion desired
[–]jhmze 31 points32 points33 points  (3 children)

This is essentially like international calling. My country starts with a +1 number. Yours might start with a +0. If I get a call from you, the number should say +0 555-5555. What happened here is that the caller ID shows "Big Scary Russian Bank"....but the phone number starts with +1. That is, it was never an international call despite what the caller ID said.

[–]imfineny 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
It's not supposed too because it's a vulnerability, but it's possible. It was not that long ago where a massive recursion attack occurred because of dns servers misconfigured to do just this. You would need to check whether the servers in question are configured to do that. I don't think it's particularly relavent either way. DNS log lookups to email servers prove nothing. Absolutely nothing. It could simply be 2 email servers spamming each other in some sort of response loop. That happens all the time, especially in enterprises likes banks and trumps org. The configured to block "all but 1 IP address" is also feasible and trivial. A lot of setups do this, but you would not be able to prove it externally so it's a groundless claim.

The IT Sector is ever growing but the general voting populace does not understand this.
[–]ikeepgettingbanned3OH 49 points50 points51 points  (18 children)
Because the ever growing IT sector is ever growing with cheap foreign labor
[–]exildeUSA 13 points14 points15 points  (0 children)
It's not just the cheapness. It's the immobility. Their residency in the US is contingent on their employment, so no risk of them going rogue with a pesky startup.
[–]Musicbymuzak 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
As a kid I always thought IT would be gold.... Sigh.
[–]tellyouwhywrongPA 2 points3 points4 points  (15 children)
To be honest, I'd like to see reform in the H1-B system and all but that foreign labor is mostly at the low end. My advice is don't strive to be a "$Vendor certified blah-blah-blah" instead focus on creating entirely new solutions that can rapidly adapt to business needs. The new IT will contain some business analysis aspects, as well as robotics and programming. It won't be fixing printers or unlocking accounts.
[–]ikeepgettingbanned3OH 0 points1 point2 points  (13 children)
As a person who recently got accepted into a grad program for information security, what areas of IT would you say I should focus on? You seem to have more foresight than me
[–]BEECH_PLEASEUSA 0 points1 point2 points  (5 children)
You're on the road to become a hacker. Learn what hacker actually means. If you don't have curiosity, passion for technology/making it do things it "shouldn't be able to", and ingenuity, you probably should find another path.
Learn to code. Learn to make things, and how to break them. Learn how to think like your own adversary.
[–]ikeepgettingbanned3OH 1 point2 points3 points  (4 children)
The challenge for me is trying to figure out where to start. Which I guess is the entire point since you're supposed to be doing things that haven't really been done. I'm going to jump into this headfirst though!

Infosec is a good start. Computer science is really want you want to learn it is the foundation of our field, most people really neglect it. It's sort of expensive but if you haven't already give intro to algorithms a read. I implemented all the interesting ones in Python as I went.
Everyone should learn about economics and business no what you want to be. The TTC course on economics is a great listen/watch. I started to become a conservative after that course as I began to understand how markets work.
Basically you want to learn anything that can help you go to a business and make them money. Automating users workflows and visualization of data are good skills to bring to the table.
Don't neglect the soft skills like public speaking and interpersonal relationship management. Another thing that separates "tech guys" from the higher paying positions is how you dress. You have to look serious to be taken seriously, this is probably the most important thing of all.
[–]ikeepgettingbanned3OH 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
Hahahaha I was an undergrad Econ major (well double major) but the degree I felt like was a stepping stone degree. Like it's really good and helps teach you statistical analysis and working with data, but i felt like my program at least didn't give me technical skill. On the side I was really into tech and taught myself Python like pretty much everyone not in a formal program but interested in learning a language with limited free time. After a couple years out of school I decided to go get a STEM degree and there was a masters program that didn't require compsci undergrad. That's pretty much why I am doing this and not compsci. Idk if that gives you a better idea of where I'm at.
[–]tellyouwhywrongPA 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
You should have the foundation of knowledge then. What I did was get tech jobs at medium or small businesses than work with the owner. I'd purpose a few changes, work them out in my free time, than implement them and add them to a portfolio of work. I turned a IT department for a bunch of dental offices from a cost center into a profit center by leveraging text messaging campaigns (Twillo is a great tool) to bring in new patients and save labor by automating appointment confirmations. By tracking new and revived customers via coupon codes I was able to prove that IT was not only free but making them a nice profit. Then I helped them sell some specialty dental equipment via setting up an online store, saving them some pretty big monthly payments and improving cash flow.
I also worked with a factory to create a system with OpenCV that counted the number of plastic pellets in a gram of product. Their lab had a full time employee doing this that was able to be moved into something less tedious.
The key is creating value as opposed to simply maintaining existing systems.
I don't want to maintain Cisco switches for my entire life (and I seriously doubt that will be happening in a decade) my goal is to start a consultancy where I solve problems like the ones above. Its the path for me, you'll have to find what fits for you.
[–]ikeepgettingbanned3OH 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very important to augment your schooling with real world XP, especially while you have free time in school. Example: computer science degree doesn't teach you all you need to be a good programmer (I'm talking about programs at top schools like UCLA, UC Berkeley). Use your time wisely and seek out some nuts and bolts subjects and learn. For InfoSec, having practical hacking experience (learn the tools and procedures to structure a "pen test" - just a suggestion/guess, as InfoSec is not my field). I suspect InfoSec changes very rapidly making this even more necessary.

The thing is IT is a specialized sector, that's why people don't understand it. Think of it like 1910, sure the average person could replace a washer in their tap, or lay some pipe. But most don't understand a wiring diagram, or why you need to replace that tube.
[–]Tenzen808USA 7 points8 points9 points  (2 children)

[–]slacking1337NG 34 points35 points36 points  (10 children)
who knows what surveillance they were able to justify due to this fraud.
[–]itsdazzlingWI 31 points32 points33 points  (3 children)
Exactly. They forged this connection to a Russian bank (which is what the FISA warrant originally used as proof) so they could justify surveilling the tower.
[–]URPerfectNY 7 points8 points9 points  (2 children)
Please ELI5 how they forged the connection, seriously I am totally out of loop on this stuff (am a nurse.)
[–]slacking1337NG 19 points20 points21 points  (1 child)
My understanding is that they didn't necessarily forge the connection itself, but rather they fabricated log files from a server to make it appear as though there was a connection. The information in the logs were proven fraudulent because of specific data points in those log files cannot exist. Imagine if you knew something was medically impossible, and then read someones chart saying that medically impossible thing occurred, you could be pretty sure that something on that chart was done fraudulently. Now imagine if someone in charge read that chart and ordered something potentially harmful based on that "impossible" chart.
[–]nodoxsavefreespeechARMY 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Also... let's put it this way. There is an algorithm for a program that follows some path like:
A B C
And you saw
A B F C
take place. The logic for the program doesn't work like that.
[–]SpinOnThis 13 points14 points15 points  (5 children)
It's been pretty obvious for some time now that they simply faked everything so they could engineer an excuse for some non IT aware judge (or judges). They simply used all the tools they had available in an attempt to win the election. This justifies all our concerns though, if you give the government too much power they'll eventually use it for nefarious purposes. No wonder they can't quite believe how they lost the election considering everything they threw at it. I bet they thought they'd got the presidency locked down for ever with the amount of pervasive shit they were pulling. Defeated by someone who just got off his ass and hit the campaign trail the old fashioned way.
[–]TootenbacherCAN 5 points6 points7 points  (4 children)
Can you just imagine their shock and disbelief on election night? I'd love to have seen Hillary's reaction, it must have been glorious to witness.
[–]SpinOnThis 2 points3 points4 points  (3 children)
Well by all accounts she was flying off the handle pretty hard in a drunken rage which is perfectly believable considering she was well known for doing both. As you say would have been a glorious thing. Would have made a great Paul Joseph Watson video for sure.

The logs show something that doesn't make sense and wouldn't have actually worked in real life. In other words someone likely edited or constructed the logs and the actions referred to in the logs never actually happened.
[–]CleverNameAndNumbersCAN 13 points14 points15 points  (0 children)
Someone tried to spoof server to server communication but got some technical aspects wrong and this showed up in the logs that were presented as evidence.

Obviously I archived that but the direct links are in the other post that OP links to.
    This is fucking huge.

I'm deleting my post since I was moaning so much about not finding these logs anywhere, and there they are.
    [–]reb1995 4 points5 points6 points  (2 children)
I believe it is something like this. These are just generic examples of technical capabilities though. Can't remember the exact circumstances of this case and I'm on mobile.
Entity A is the "bad guy." Entity A sends crafted traffic to Entity B, who we'll call TrumpServer, that tells TrumpServer to get some data from Entity C, Alfa Bank. It looks like B and C are communicating but it is really A making them.
Or, it could be A is sending traffic to C and having it be returned to B.
    [–]TootenbacherCAN 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
So like if I mail an anonymous letter to the IRS and use someone else's return address on it, right?

    Pretty much, yeah.
    [–]nikitonio 31 points32 points33 points  (4 children)
It doesn't matter. People will still rather believe that everything bad in this world is solely Putin's fault than use their brains to think about things. It's just easier.
    [–]C4ANIDEUSA 20 points21 points22 points  (2 children)
George Carlin paraphrase: "Think of how stupid the average person is, now realize that half of the people are dumber than that guy"
I cannot remember it word for word but you get the gist.
Some people are educated far beyond their intelligence.
    [–]DeliciousRobot 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
It might be better to talk about wisdom.
Because ultimately what happens is that people get proud and continue to believe in something that is stupid, even when they are smart.
So called "dumb" people can be good. Haven't you ever might a nice hobo, child, or mentally retarded person? Man all those people in third world countries sure are dumb right? It doesn't matter. What matters is if they are good people.
Many a pede on this sub, that started off against Trump, tries to say that they were lied to, but the truth is they simply did not listen to the truth for it would make them wrong.
Nobody really wants to be wrong, and we do horrible things to run from it when it happens.
It is always better on you to be humble when you might be wrong. If we don't have that here then we are just as bad as the liberals we fight against.
Not trying to bash you. You are right, many people in the world are "dumb". Just trying to say the heart matters more.
    [–]ChickenOverlordRUS 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
That quote always bugs me because it should be median, not average. But obviously the median idiot wouldn't understand if he said median
    [–]NoUseForAName123 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Under most circumstances you would be right.
But this would be like trying to ignore Watergate at the height of public attention. If it turns out that the basis for surveillance on the Trump campaign was faked, it would be one of the largest political scandals in world history.
Some things are so big they cannot be ignored. This would be a massive red pill not just in America, but globally.
    [–]yearp99 11 points12 points13 points  (1 child)
How would they even have gotten the information on this server? It was some professor who apparently told them about it.. how would they have that info?
    [–]64565426156RUS 9 points10 points11 points  (1 child)
This slate article helped launch the whole Russia narrative: link. Slate got its intel for the article from someone named TeaLeaves, who obtained 'server logs' showing a Trump/Russian bank (Alpha Bank) connection. Obtaining these logs would've required highly privileged/well-funded access. /pol and conspiracy has a theory TeaLeaves faked the server logs, though details remain murky at this point.

See, I am so confused here. The article states that Vixie is the top/best/all-knowing/most knowledgeable person when it comes to this stuff, and the article says that he pretty much verified the logs that were brought to them. So, does that mean that Vixie is complicit also? Or does it mean that TeaLeaves & Co outsmarted him? Because I just looked on Vixie's Twitter and it says that BIND is one of his tech specialties- so wouldn't he have been able to see that there was some fuckery going on here?

Basically... This story is ground zero for both the 'Muh Russia' investigation AND the Trump wiretapping claims.
In layman's terms, a professor (TeaLeaves a.k.a. L. Jean Camp) and her colleague (TeaKettle a.k.a. Timothy Kelley) who are both anti-Trump (judging by their social media/online presence) falsified logs to make it look like there were communications between Trump's mail servers (at Trump Tower) and a Russian bank's (Alfa Bank) servers.
The forgery was completed using clever typos to make it look genuine (e.g. Trump Organisation was spelt with a zero to instead read 'Trump 0rganiation')
The prof and her colleague went running to the media, who (as expected) didn't bother to vet anything. Media prints 'Trump Tower communicated with Russian bank'. Muh Russia narrative gains traction.
Now we get into speculation....but speculation which seems to fit the story. It is speculated that these falsified logs were obtained by Obumble's team then flashed in front of a FISA judge (after previous attempts had failed, due to lack of evidence). And BINGO.... Obumble has full surveillance on Trump.
That's how I read it anyway. Happy to be corrected if I've made a mistake above.

Time to find out if either of these stooges have connections with the previous administration's stooges.
    [–]JockBurnMI 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
What I don't get is how did this professor think she would explain how she got access to the logs? I think this is what Sarah Carter has been talking about on Hannity. But I mean, did she really go running to the media and no one bothered to ask her "why the fuck do you have access to this stuff"?

"The broader impact/commercial potential of this Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I project is to enable individuals and businesses to create and manage the plethora of passwords required by today's information infrastructure. The National Cyber Leap Year initiative identified the need to change the game in cybersecurity, increasing costs for attackers and easing the burdens of self-defense. A broader impact of the proposal is changing the game in favor of defenders, against password guessing or masquerade attacks.
The company's technology builds on the human strengths of linguistic diversity and contextual memory to solve the core challenges of passwords: lack of entropy, reuse, and lack of contextualization. People are asked to create passwords without thinking of the domain name, the purpose, the word "password", or the keyboard in front of them. Thus people cannot secure their accounts. The high potential of commercial payback is the protection of personal and commercial assets.
Aligning human behaviors and incentives is a promising approach in designing technologies to address social engineering - a problem that has proven intractable in the face of current education, awareness, and technological efforts.
This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I project offers a system that aligns human cognitive behavior with technological requirements for security by engaging episodic memory. Today when creating a password, people are presented with the requirements to create a random phrase, not to write it down, not to reuse it, not to forget it, and not use any available cues in this task. In short, it is not humanly possible to create and remember strong, complex passwords. The approach being developed in this project combines four innovative features.
First, it is aligned with - instead of in opposition to - natural cognitive processes.
Second, the very process of using photos to offer more randomness in passwords enables the creation of a visual cue that is linked to a specific password and site.
Third, the technology's connection between that cue and the password makes identifying phishing easier for the targeted person, because uncued recall is more difficult than cued recall.
Fourth, the creation of a domain-specific image that must be obtained from a domain-specific server to cue the recall requires phishing become a man in the middle attack. This increases attack difficulty and decreases difficulty of detection."

    tl;dr

The guy who forged the logs previously applied to SBIR.gov (Small Business Innovation Research program) and it appears that he did end up receiving government funding through the National Science Foundation for his tech/cyber/security/IT know-how under his business's name, "Neurocrypt".

Falsifying evidence, in order to obtain a FISA warrant, to spy on a Presidential candidate. My my my. I hope the FISA request comes out today.

Some brave, well spoken autist needs to get onto this
      [–]hj860815 -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)

      no sperging out

      Everyone should have this link:
That is the original Fake News story about a Trump server connected to Russia. It is very literally fake news.
      [–]Jkeets777 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
We need to send this to Trump and all of his staff ASAP.
Someone whos good at writing please write up a draft linking the evidence so we can send it thousands of times
Tweeting and hashtags are needed too

      Tealeaves

This is what we did best during the election folks. Spread this.

It's like the good old days.

The framing of Trump needs to be brought out to congress. This is some serious intent and really pokes holes in the "muh Russia" story. It's frustrating how things that help Trump (and bring out the truth) is so buried. And yet nonsense & lies to destroy Trump is all out there.
I'm going to put this on my prayer list. We need disclosure
      [–]MagneticToastPA 3 points4 points5 points  (1 child)
It needs to be brought to msm and they need to be shamed apologized and dismantled for the violence and hate they are inciting
      [–]jtr807NAVY 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
      They will never apologize

I remember from the beginning this communication was de-bunked. Way back during the campaign. Yet CNN decided to run with it again.
      [–]SaffaLife 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Wouldnt it be wonderful if cnn got canned for their obvious anti-American narative during this Trump timeline.

These libtards not only want a terrible relationship with Russia but also wrongly accuse the President of the United States, arguably the most patriotic American, to be a Russian agent.
      [–]CrawfishBoilerPA 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
Will this not lead a sane person to say that then Russia did not do this, and if Russia did not do this, then maybe they didn't hack Hillary's emails?
      [–]chikenbutPOW 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)
No, they didn't. Seth Rich leaked them. Everything makes sense now huh?
      [–]CrawfishBoilerPA 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
That is what I was getting at. You and I and the rest of T_D are sane. Let's hope we get someone in the IC to think just as logically and demand access to Hillary's server.
      [–]Ippi_Boy 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
English mother fuckers.. can we speak it? I get they show the server did something that's not possible. Where is this information found?
      [–]pm_your_trump_pics 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
You mean the magically obtained "DNS Logs" <--- WHO THE FUCK HAS ACCESS TO THOSE SERVERS? turned out to be fake, color me surprised.

President Trump and his team needs to get a hold of this information! YUGE!
      [–]Brookebader1 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
This seems pretty interesting. I'm not sure what people will use to say it's wrong but I'm sure liberals are. What's the argument against it being true?
      [–]BraujagerKOR 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Yeah, as if Trump banks any of his Alpha - he exudes it in every meeting, every tweet, hell, every picture! This man has Alpha to burn, 'pedes, why would he need a bank? :)
      [–]lazytex 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
      Pretext for Obama's surveillance maybe?
      [–]Keiichi81 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
As interesting as this is, no one outside r/The_Donald will take some random redditor on a conspiracy sub seriously. This needs to be picked up by a news network before we can start waving this in anyone's face.
      [–]Speed-and-Power 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
