The South was producing raw materials (cotton, tobacco, lumber) that was going north for their factories. The south was being thoroughly screwed one the deal so they wanted to secede to set up factories and produce themselves increasing their profits. The north could not produce raw materials and if the south had left to set up their own factories the entire northern economy would have collapsed.
