Donald Trump has agreed to deliver a commencement speech at anti-gay Liberty University later this year.
Said Trump in a statement given exclusively to the Christian Broadcasting Network:
Self-described as “the largest private Christian university in the world”, Liberty University was founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell. Falwell was one of the most well-known homophobes in the country until his death in 2007.
In 2006, the school banned all LGBT student groups on the grounds of “morality”. In 2014, Liberty University filed for exemption from federal anti-discrimination laws so it could continue implementing its anti-LGBT policies openly.
Such policies include a no gay sex policy. New students are forced to sign a statement in which they pledge not to engage in homosexual sexual relations, or have sex with a transgender person. It states: “Sexual relations outside of a Biblically ordained marriage between a natural-born man and natural-born woman are not permissible at Liberty University.”
Jerry Falwell Jr., the school’s current president, is ecstatic about Trump’s upcoming appearance.
“His supporters, including over 80% of the evangelical community, are thrilled with President Trump’s actions so far,” he told the Christian Broadcasting Network.
“The fact that the mainstream media and the Establishment (on the left and the right) remain in attack mode with their often baseless and dishonest claims against Trump is a sign that President Trump is doing a wonderful job.”
In actuality, Trump’s approval rating sits at 37 percent right now, making him the least popular president in over 70 years.
