Napoleon was not French!
Okay, I will brace for heavy rolls on this one; Napoleon was not French! Yes, I said it, and the truth shall set you free!!!!
Why? Because:
1) Actual name - Napoleone Buonaparte
2) Native language - Italian
3) Family origins - Tuscan nobility, likely from around Pisa.
4) Father's name - Carlo Maria Buonaparte
5) Mother's name - Letizia Ramolino
I could cite a few more facts, but I think I am making myself clear. Now, before somebody brings up the fact that he was born in Corsica (never Corse as the French say it), and that Corsica was not part of Italy, let's please keep in mind that Italy had not yet reconstituted itself as a country, that would have to wait until 1870.
So, now that I have stirred up the pot, please, let me hear from you.

He lived closer to Italy but was a French citizen by law.

Good job, Napoleon was not of French but of Italian ancestry, that is correct, no one (today) disputes that.

He lived most of his adult life in France, considered himself French, and was emperor of France, so I'm going to go ahead and chalk him up as French.

But Napoleon was French. I think somebody needs to do his homework.

Well, you have to define what is meant by being "French". If you mean born in the country proper... then yes, he was not French. However, I think that he was "French" in most other cultural and historical contexts.
Can one be an American without being born in the United States? (Yes, I know there are other pretend countries near by that can claim to be "Americas" as well, by virtue of having their borders on a continent that ends with "___ America"... but I'm using "American" in the sense used by those people who hate Americans.) :)
Sure.
Is the foreign citizen who enlists in the US military any less "American" than his squad-mate who was born in Brooklyn? Nah.
You see where I'm going with that. :)

Sorry Piccolo, I can't buy it. My kid was born overseas, but he still holds an American passport.
