I'm not the one that usually believes in conspiracies, but some are real, and this one definitely is. I recently posted a story about this in /r/Europe, where the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency had identified over 72 Russian agencies working on information warfare, now engaging in daily anti-Swedish attacks in social media. (BTW, four hours later there was a Russian Government English-language response at "Sputnik News".) It's a well known fact that Putin has sponsored various nationalists across Europe, so I'm not surprised that he would use this well-documented apparatus in support of Donald Trump also... I found this comment particularly apt:

— The concern is that we can not make rational decisions anymore. It affects the population, which in turn affects the political ability to make decisions and that people get a distorted picture of reality, if there's a lack of critical thinking.

[–]Hydra-Bob[S] 45 ポイント46 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well, solidarity my enlightened European friend. Trump's been heavily courting the White Nationalist set here in the united states as well. He even seated an infamous White Nationalist troll in the VIP section at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/46173_White_Supremacists_Were_Everywhere_at_the_GOP_Convention

It would explain why the other post with Putin picture was so triggering to Reddit trump supporters in a very weird kind of way. Like they took it really really personally. It all makes sense now.

Is there a way to gather data on how many trump Reddit supporters connect from Russia? Via their api or scrap data from the site directly?

[–]tomdarch 6 ポイント7 ポイント  (1子コメント)

If this is a government managed system, wouldn't they use VPNs or similar systems to appear to originate from somewhere other than Russia?

[–]Democritus76 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Good point, they would most assuredly spoof their locations.

In this very sub, I've encountered people forcefully pushing back against the fact that Trump and Putin support one another. They claim to be anti-Trump but non-ironically accused me of McCarthyism and of echoing Glenn Beck for saying that Trump was Putin's puppet.

[–]TheMank 20 ポイント21 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Glenn Greenwald is pushing that too. Pretty much exactly that post. Trump may not actually be 'working' with Putin. But his advisors are uncomfortably supportive of Russia. Hillary would be out of the race if she had the same ties. And Trump may very well be in a pickle financially, for all we know, and dependent on foreign investment. These are legitimate issues.

edit: that post you link is eerily close to Greenwald himself. See for yourself.

[–]It_Could_Happen_HereBEST FUCKING TEMPERAMENT 12 ポイント13 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Interesting, thank you. I usually like Greenwald but he — and really everyone at the Intercept — have the blinders on when it comes to Putin. Yes, they gave Snowden asylum but one self-serving right doesn't absolve a litany of wrongs.

Yes, I can't imagine it otherwise. Though, honestly, I think it's very conceivable that Trump is as reckless with his money as he is with his mouth; always having to dig himself out of holes. His free cash flow may always need infusions from whatever scheme he can concoct next.

I suspect entering the primaries was simply a way to leverage his name to jump on the right wing media gravy train; maybe with a another TV show, or even a cable channel as his highest aspiration - his next project to generate income to finance his helicopter lifestyle. Lo and behold, his uncouth populism caught fire, and he found himself on the ride of his life.

My fear is that he could very well be dependent on several channels keeping him liquid. Are some of them Russian? Who knows, but he certainly has several advisors who are very supportive of Russia and Putin. The fact that so many Republicans seem unalarmed and are willing to overlook this is mind boggling.

The Trump-Russia ties only dawned on me a few days ago with the utterly insane NATO comments, so I was stunned by how much has already been written on it over the last month or two. I think it's absolutely plausible that if you aren't familiar with the context and why there are so many serious concerns that it might sound insane and like some sort of "red scare."

In 2011 I saw a curiously massive uptick in pro-Russian posts in /r/worldnews after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Also, /r/syriancivilwar used to be a pretty good sub reddit. But when Russia intervened in 2015 there was a huge spike in the number of pro-Russian and pro-government posts and comments.

And today on /r/politics, I see the same kinds of posts that I saw back then. The spreading of misinformation, huge leaps in logic, and "proof" that doesn't add up are all routinely upvoted to the top and they're all suspiciously focused in one direction.

It's not a matter of if. It's a matter of how many of them are paid trolls and how many of them are useful idiots.

    • Up votes peak and then trolls brigade with counter down votes
    • After down vote brigade begins, troll accounts being posting falsehoods
    • If propaganda posts contain a source, its usually a 'conservative blogger' type site to support their argument.

Wtf?? That first NY Times article is the craziest thing I've ever read.

I mean, I figured Reddit was getting invaded from somewhere, but I figured it was just people from /pol/ going nuts with multiple accounts each.

I'm rational though, unlike trump supporters, so I'll need to see more concrete evidence before thinking it's really a Russian conspiracy - but yeah I have noticed it's extremely bizarre how reddit's hive mind has pulled a 180.

What still scares me though is that the few times I've received messages or replies from crazy Trumpets, I've checked their profiles for any shady signs. Most seemed to be normal accounts that are years old and an otherwise normal posting history aside from their batshit insane political views.

    [–]heelspider 33 ポイント34 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Part of me wants to believe it, and r/politics is pretty clearly brigaded, but extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. You did good work and made good arguments, but in the end, it's not sufficient for a conclusion.

Yeah, this is more plausible than most conspiracy theories, and Reddit's sudden political opinion shift does need explanation (Bernie or Busters, as misguided as they may be, are at least clearly Reddit natives, but the orcs sure as hell aren't) but I'm not convinced it's Russian shills rather than just /pol/.

Not all of them are Russian shills of course, but Russia's use of state sponsored social media agents for other issues is a documented fact. I have no doubt there is some degree of state sponsored action. It's been a part of Russian military doctrine for a long time now.

Almost ALL of them have this Neil Turner guy commenting within 3 seconds of Trump's tweet. Also a Jason Bergcamp doing the same.

Notice all the profiles with relatively attractive females. Hover over their names to expand bio. Almost ALL of those accounts have something like "TRUMP 2016! FOLLOW IF YOU SUPPORT". Also notice they were opened relatively recently between mid-2015 and now.

I think youre absolutely right about Russia, but theres more to it. Its not just the paid shills, but armies of "alt-right" folks who have left their nazi forums and see it part of their mission to support Trump wherever they can.

      See this post:
      https://www.reddit.com/r/altright/comments/4uxgt8/rthe_donald_just_banned_everyone_on_raltright/

As these people have spread from their racist caves like coontown into mainstream subs like news and politics, more and more normal people have been exposed to their crap. It follows that normal people get tired of seeing this racism every day and simply stop engaging with reddit. Rather then pushing back, they leave. Thats one less downvote for the racist post, which in turn gives that post more legitimacy, and thus, more people see it.

      Rinse and repeat.

The "rule" before was that you were safe if you stayed off all. You could enjoy your city subreddit, your pokemon subreddit etc. But thats no longer the case.

      [–]Hydra-Bob[S] 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Good observation, man. If every American Nazi/White Nationalist on the internet decided to aggressively game /r/politics they might be able to do it. It seems like that would take a pretty large concerted effort but I bet they could do it if they had a paid advertising firm gaming reddit coordinating with them. That would explain why Donald was handing out VIP passes, press credentials and floor passes to White Supremacists and the fucking nazi in Donald's VIP box at the convention.

      [–]walkedoff 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (0子コメント)

They dont have to be the majority, they just have the be the loudest and most active. Most reddit readers lurk. They dont post, they dont vote. So if 100% of the nazis are posting 50 times a day, but the regular folks comment once a week, it all becomes skewed.

If the reddit owners want to keep their popularity, they need to act, fast

      [–]Spiritreaver 7 ポイント8 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm a Reddit lurker, but started to stray into political subs when the RNC started to gauge reactions and was quite weirded out by the massive Donald following here.

Reading this is both depressing and scary. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, so I hope it's not true, but I grossly dislike what's been happening on Reddit the past few days. Nearly no posts of reason or thoughtful discussion make it to the top or on /all.

I don't know how Reddit works as a whole community, but it really seems in very poor taste to let subs get manipulated so heavily. But again, I'm more of an observer here so I may just not "get" Reddit.

Thankfully I've found a few subs with actual discussion and sane people.

      [–]Cyril_Clunge 8 ポイント9 ポイント  (0子コメント)

      Honestly, fuck /r/politics.

I made a few comments there this morning and had people accusing me of being a Clinton shill. Their logic was that even if I'm not part of CTR, I'm supporting a "corrupt criminal" and therefore am a shill.

They love to point out any Clinton shills but then when it's suggested there are shills who are from Russia or pro-Trump, that's a ludicrous notion.

Apparently only Clinton, Israel and corporations shill.

Whatever is happening, you can't have discussion in /r/politics.

      [–]sri745 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Thank you for posting this - this explains a lot of the comments I've been seeing in some of the other subs.

      [–]sfb_stufu 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (0子コメント)

My post on /r/politics regarding Trump willing to give the police military gear was upvoted the first half hour, with a lot of replies. After one hour, it was buried.

It's not very logical, if people are interested in the first half hour, they will also remain interested after that half hour. Likely a bot downvoting it sufficiently so it gets buried. The bots strategically choose which posts remain: most of the posts are anti Trump or less damaging to Trump.

They know redditors don't like the police having military gear. /r/politics is likely to be manipulated.

      [–]LesterPearsonsProjct 8 ポイント9 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Does this sound like Trump's core constituency?

Sort of. It's very common on Reddit to find people whose beliefs are reactionary but who self-identify as 'liberal', 'progressive' or 'moderate' due to either (1) their own ignorance, or (2) the peculiar cultural trappings of the pre-Trump GOP which caused them to feel excluded from it

      [–]Hydra-Bob[S] 23 ポイント24 ポイント  (2子コメント)

But that doesn't explain /r/politics frequent radical mood swings where suddenly anti-trump articles make it to the top when nothing has been able to get more than a smattering of votes for weeks along with 1 out of 30 or more days when articles positively reflective of Clinton make it up top with thousands of votes when the rest of the time they struggle to get past 1 vote. It doesn't track.

If its not Putin its somebody with a fuck load of internet connections and a hell of a software suite who happened to take a few days off when that wikileaks article dropped.

Thank you collecting this evidence and putting it together in a straight forward manner. Depraved Donnie has no place in our government.

Tbh, this is pretty scary. If it's happening on reddit, chances are it could be happening in a lot of other places.

This is so true. I regularly find out Im debating an out of country national in Pol. I have been temporarily banned several times for calling out their idiocy and basic misunderstanding of how American Government works.

It makes total sense that they are from russia aswell as they regularly do not understand business and big capitalism.

Is it at all possible that they have a large and growing army of alt account bots to upvote content on T_D and r/politics? Or does reddit have effective ways to prevent that? Checking their traffic stats, there seems to some strange things going on. I think the r/news "controversy" happened around 6/12 but for the subs to go from around 1,000 a day to nearly 11,000 on 6/12 seems unlikely.

Somehow they are able to push posts at will to the top of r/all and are basically camped out at around 5 - 15 on r/all at all times. They obviously know how to game the algorithm and I guess reddit is OK with that, but that is not how things were intended to work.

Also there are subtle and not so subtle efforts at vote manipulation. "uptrump this post" and "get this to the top" and "you know what to do" etc. Is that OK? I don't know, I'm new here.

Either way I'm against this over the top, in your face, trump bullshit, so I want to push back.

i would think there would have to be a good way to bait and at least catalogue what is happening... or at least have a coordinated anti-campaign against them..

I sent you a message about this topic, but didn't get a reply yet, so perhaps this issue is no longer so pressing on Reddit.

The only thing I wanted to add however, is that there have, of course, been huge orchestrated 'troll raids' by alt.right-ers over the course of the U.S. general election. For instance, the anti defemation league noticed a spike of over 2 million anti-jewish comments posted on twitter in the first six months of 2016. This was a massive anomaly. They investigated and found that a relatively tiny group (1600 people) were responsible for 2/3rds of these tweets (more than 1.5 million of them, in other words) and that the posters almost all claimed to be pro-Trump. So that sounds like the work of the alt.right, to me... it just goes to show you how much time these people have on their hands. It also goes to show you how easy it is for a minority group to overwhelm the public discourse just as long as they are working all-out.

Edit: that's not to say that no russian troll farms were involved in what you're talking about... I'm sure they got on board with all the chaos, too... But it is to say that, whenever a huge spike in unusual post activity that is out of keeping with the 'local' demographic occurs, it should definitely be investigated. there's certain to be a partisan faction lurking behind it.

      Dude it's just /pol/

      [–]Hydra-Bob[S] 18 ポイント19 ポイント  (5子コメント)

See, that occurred to me for a split second but /r/pol is just too damned small. At this moment their top upvote has only 6 votes. Not well enough organized and they definitely don't have enough resources but Putin's village certainly does. I'm far from being an expert but if they had enough VPN's, some code to interact and coordinate on the site faster than people could along with a bunch of computers and an understanding of the logarithm then I just don't think it would be too hard to game. I've seen my brother-in-law write code to interact with Apple's website to buy iphones during releases in order to secure those much-valued reservations to purchase them. Kind of the same thing. Just have some code track which comments and threads to upvote and which to downvote distributed across a mass of hardware and internet connections. Putin has his own national telecom industry to work with.

It's not the subreddit /pol/ dude, it's the 4chan board. I mean, go there for 15 minutes if you can stomach it. It's blatantly obvious.

      [–]Hydra-Bob[S] 15 ポイント16 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Again... just not that many people there. 6% of Americans use Reddit. That's more than 4chan could handle without major coordination and a billion idiots bragging about it all the time non-stop on here. Besides 4chan is crap at keeping secrets and this has been going on for months.

      [–]literallydontcaree 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Dude you are seriously underestimating the amount of people that visit /pol/ on the chans. Combine that with the local Reddit weirdos and then other alt-right memers, it easily accounts for the majority of /r/the_donald's subscribers. I'm sure there's astro turfing going on, but not on any large scale.

Besides 4chan is crap at keeping secrets and this has been going on for months.

      It's not a secret...

There is no demographic or historical precedence for /r/politics to have been skewed so heavily towards a candidate whose supporter demographics are so far disconnected from the actual demographics of reddit.

There is no precedence for a candidate like Trump period. Once the memers and pol weirdos decided he was their new meme it drew people who normally never post on Reddit out. idk why you're not applying Occam's Razor here.

      These aren't the same thing.

There is no way that the demographic represented on reddit could possibly organically create an environment like you see on Politics. But the party that has been foaming at the mouth for 8 years about Obama being a secret Muslim could very believably elect someone like Trump.

So if it's not organic, how is it happening? There are not that many people or groups or organizations with the capacity to pull off what OP is suggesting.

One of the most believable scenarios is that a well organized group of people are cooperating on this project almost every day like it's their fucking job. That doesn't really sound like a small group of dedicated Internet activists to me... It sounds a lot bigger.

BUT I honestly don't know what exactly they're doing, and maybe it could be done with a few dozen well vetted trolls from /pol/ that are computer savvy, tight lipped and have access to a lot of existing reddit accounts.

For the most part, I agree. Which is exactly why I point to /pol/. Go there at any time of day and wade through a few threads, you're likely to find links back to /r/politics and talk about red-pilling.

The rest is from the nature of Reddit and /r/politics in particular. Hillary has been hated since day fucking one. The jerk has been against her. Bernie Bros fucking RAN /r/politics and they still do. Except the ones still around now are the die hard insane ones. You don't see any Clinton supporters there because why bother? So you can get called CTR and downvoted no matter what you say? Better to just ignore it. It's what happens in subs like /r/politics. It's just an echo chamber now.

Its not that weird. Putin already does this openly across parts of Europe to the point where his setup is synonymous with brigading online period.
