Refs Had Enough
(6 votes)

This isn't a typical "refs suck" thread. But I noticed throughout the game that our players were whining and acting more aggressive towards the refs than usual. K even throwing his jacket in anger at the calls.

Meanwhile, I don't recall a single outburst from SC. They talked calmly to the refs and had sidebars with them.

Question is, do you think the refs got tired of our guys whining and as a result were less likely to blow a whistle?

Human behavior to allow the game to be played at SC's tempo given the crowd and home advantage for them. We got hacked all night and were called on anything ticky tack. It's not a "blame the ref" comment -- it is what it is. We all smelled this as a trap game given where the game was going to be played. I don't think any true Duke fan is really surprised by this result. Crowd plays a huge role. Helps usually ****** offensive teams put up points, helps them on the FT line, etc. We had no emotional momentum the entire damn game.

Anyone else think it was weird K tossed his jacket like 4 minutes into the game?

Of course the SC players weren't complaining, they were getting every call!

But I hear you though. There has been some terrible officiating this whole tournament, and our players complain more than others.

They were frustrated by how aggressive SC played D all night and got away with everything. It's a tough game to play and I don't blame them.

Why would SC have complained about calls?

Look, the refs tried to adapt to the SC style and didn't. We got called for many ticky tack fouls where SC was hacking, bumping on drives and the whistle never blew. They went 17 minutes of action between the 1st and 2nd half with only three fouls called on them. And that one ref called a foul on Amile from in front of the scorers table when the play was happening on the other side of the court with a ref 3 feet away and saw nothing.

But it is what it is. If you foul on every play, you'll get away with a few. And Carolina went 19 minutes the second half with only three called on them.

They played extremely aggressive perimeter defense, that is true. The problem is that only one of guards dribbled through it to score and that was Grayson.

They stayed at home on our kickouts. The problem was that our guards cant beat their man off the dribble.

It was as though the zebras forgot about the "freedom of movement" rules and called the game like it was 10 years ago....

So you're admitting that we couldn't adapt? This SC team has lost a good amount of games, it's not like they're unbeatable. We just lost.

Yep. Kennard looked like he was on an anti-depressant or something. I wonder if K sensed it and threw his jacket early to try to get the guys fired up.

He threw his jacket because of the way the calls were going. Probably trying fire up his team early and get the refs attention that he wasn't happy with the direction. It obviously didn't help and may have made it worse. There was an obvious agenda in tonight's game. Duke could have won it if they made more plays and responded better but the agenda was obvious.

A great team finds a way to adapt (needed to make more plays and not play young) and win but sc had a different set of rules they have not had all season.

A true pg would of killed the that aggressive perimeter defense. Not having one is a big reason our offense stood still.

The Refs sucked hard during the UNCheat game and that level of sucking and one-sided calls simply continued.
