62,275 shady ladies discussing the Emmy award winning show for the past 5 years!
/r/rupaulsdragrace is one of my favourite communities on reddit - witty, irreverent, and wickedly funny, this sub highlights the best and the worst of the drag queens featured on this Emmy award winning, groundbreaking show.
A reality series in the vein of America's Next Top Model, every season features a selection of drag queens who compete to decide who will be America's Next Drag Superstar! Contestants strive to display their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent (check that acronym) in challenges that include stand up comedy, makeovers, sewing, acting, and singing. Each episode culminates in a winner and a bottom two, who then must lipsync for their lives while a rotating panel of celebrity judges and Mama Ru herself decide who deserves to stay, and who must sashay away.
The level of detail the readers go into to discover who's on the show (Nancy Drewing, as it's referred to) is crazy impressive, and is almost always spot on. Readers dig through social media and post relevant images, gifs, videos, fan art, and just about anything you could ever want to find about this show.
And of course, what's a show about drag queens without a little drama, mama? Here's their winning nomination for SRD's Little Engine that Could award.
But it's not just about having a good time - the community and the show itself are also about support and education. The Orlando shooting affected a lot of the Drag Race community. One of the queens recently went through an HIV scare, and posted about it. One of the main judges helped an LGBT teen who was kicked out by his family get help. Another reader held a fundraiser for victims of domestic abuse along with the help of fan favourite Katya. Herstory lessons come in the form of viewing recommendations like Paris is Burning and a whole host of other important films and documentaries.
