Unpopular opinion: I think 3atb compliments better Valencia, Pogba, Herrera and our defense. (self.reddevils)

3-5-2. Ibra can work with rashford/Martial(as a left forward, dribbling and cutting inside as he loves).

Valencia will do his thing without having to track back so much.

Pogba can shine better with the defense and herrera protecting him.

Plus, if we get griezmann, we can fit both him and pogba just fine.

What do you think?

i think it could work if we played Blind Bailly and Rojo at the back but with Smalling and Jones there it results in some very ugly football.

It exposes all soft spots of Jones and mostlx Smalling. I cant remember him havin a good game in a while

I think Smalling has the potential to rediscover his good form last season. Smalling Bailly Rojo not bad honestly. Jones probably just cover along with the academy dudes. Need a Valencia clone on the left, hopefully it's Shaw if not we gotta get a new guy there with legs and a cross

It was pointed out that Smalling might be struggling due to the fact we've swapped from man marking in defence to zonal marking.

Smalling always excelled when he was bullying strikers 1 v1, but he probably lacks the tactical discipline and positional awareness to really excel in a zonal system. He's finding himself in more uncomfortable situations this year.

I do like Smalling and at the least he's a good back up, but I really hope we buy a CB who's really good positionally and good with the ball at some point.

I like Blind Jones and Rojo, Op makes a point though, playing 5 at the back will help Pogba out because he'll also have less defensive responsibility.

It definitely protects all those players defensively, but the problem is you remove a creative player or Carrick from midfield to play it, and play another CB instead. This can cause issues in attack and building attacks from the back if your CBs aren't good on the ball.

It easily invites pressure when we're sitting passing about our CBs. Jones and Smalling in a back 3 isn't looking great IMO. Agree with the other guy that if we did persist with it, Blind would be ideal on the left of the 3.

A formation that might work with more stability at the back.

If we brought in a world class CB to scare the fuck out of Jones and Smalling then we might get results with it.

We need someone like Vidic or Rio who commanded the defence. They made the likes of Wes Brown and John O'Shea play better. There are no commanding voices in defence so this is a big risk currently.

I dont think Mou would play the 352, he prefers playing one man up top.

But i do think the 343 would bring the best out of our defense with Valencia and Shaw as the wing backs and would indeed bring the best out of Pogba.

But if we are to play a 3 man defense, Blind has to be apart of it, the amount of space the central defender in the 3 has should be given to a good distributor of the ball/quarterback as Daley was for us last season.

My ideal 343 would be

I would like to see Timbo in a couple seasons eventually alongside Pogba, he's an absolute engine that doesn't stop running and would play the role well to allow Pogba, Valencia and Shaw to bomb forward but he has barely played in midfield for us let alone play so we'll have to wait and see.
