Terrifying.

Yeah especially that last second where it looks like the orca is coming in to nibble the end of the board.

NOPE. Nope fuck that shit. Nope.

At the end the orca was just smiling for the camera, not coming in for a nibble.

Aren't wild orcas pretty friendly towards humans? I thought only captive ones were batshit crazy

I'm not sure how they interact with humans in the wild but they're known to team up and basically torture other species of whales. So I personally would shit myself while calmly trying to get back to shore.

Something about their color scheme makes them seem like friends though.

It's because they're basically water pandas.

Only more dangerous and less cuddly.

Pandas will rip your face off in a heartbeat.

That color scheme is common among animals that are domesticated.

I did the research a while back and there are VERY few (if non-existent) attacks of killer whales on humans.

But considering they are basically the wolves of the ocean I wouldn't press your luck there..

There are zero attacks on people by orcas in the wild. The only time orcas attack people are in captivity(see:"Blackfish "). Orcas are one of the most intelligent creatures in the world, and they treat humans with respect if the same goes for the orcas. The only time you would need to be afraid of an orca is if you are a sea bird, squid, octopus, sea turtle, shark, ray, or a fish. Edit: one person has been attacked before in the wild, they were not killed.

I looked this up and it's pretty much true, but I also read that they have been known to prey on moose that swim between islands. If orcas ran into enough humans to see them as food I doubt they would hold back on killing people.

That's actually pretty interesting, I never knew that orcas ate moose. I guess there is a chance that orcas would eat a large group of people, but we don't know for sure, and most people probably wouldn't want to test that theory.

Ya I'm guessing it depends on how hungry the orca would be when it happens to run into a person, or how much of an asshole they're feeling like being that day.

They truly are the cats of the sea.

Add seals to that list.

You right, can't believe that I forgot that they eat seals.

[–]anomalous_cowherd [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Or if you were floating about making a seal shaped silhouette when viewed from below...

why would you say very few if you found 0 information about actual attacks? just curious

they are dolphins. they kill whales, we fucked up the translation of "whale killer" into killer whales

We don't register as food to them. We are merely toys to practice so they can be better predators when it counts. Such as with seals.

Edit: Orcas are scary. They can have the name "Killer Whales" tell the Japanese to ramp up their efforts...

That's true but many orcas love to eat seal. I'd say between curiosity and their predatory nature, I just wouldn't want to risk it.

don't do that, they are attracted to the smell of shit.

They are some of the biggest assholes in the ocean. They will toy with injured prey for pre-dinner entertainment. Sometimes they'll wound prey to slow them down and bring them to the surface, then swim underneath and see how far they can launch the stricken animal into the air with their tail.

So basically an aquatic version of a cat?

I don't know what their kill-to-eat ratio is. Cats are about 4:1, so possibly they are still the bigger assholes even compared to the 5 ton aquatic jerk panda.

I believe there have been no reported human deaths via orca in the wild, only in captivity.

Reported being the key word there. Doubtful that any victim remains would make it back to shore. Even if they did, what would you think? Torn up body parts wash up on shore? Shark attacks. Orca bastards are playing the long game, getting us to kill the sharks for them

Those fuckers are the top predators of the ocean who feast on Great White Sharks.... he was probably considering whether you were worth eating or not

Depending on where it is this is not true. The orcas where I live exclusively eat a certain species of salmon and wouldn't even harm a seal.

It's actually kind of fascinating that orca have cultures. Orca are versatile predators that can prey on a variety of species, but many populations tend to specialize in one or another food in different parts of the world. They clearly learn this from their families along with regional vocalizations. They even "stick to their own" when meeting orca with different cultures.

They never feast on great whites. No orca species do. They will kill and possibly eat some of one on rare occasion, but that's just to protect their seal hunting territory. They definitely don't see great whites as food.

This is not true they kill great whites yes but they dont eat them, there is a whole documentary on it, crazy stuff.

There are only TWO cases of orcas killing great whites, and neither shark was fully grown.

Here's an interesting picture of an orca from google image search.

Edit: I think this is where San Diego gets its name from. Anyone confirm that?

Orcas not going to do shit. He noticed the camera.

Definetly... I saw the cheeky mouth opening right at the end and all I can say is NOOOOOOPPPEEEE

Right! he was gonna have a nibble that might have at least thrown the guy off.

Some animals will think that the board looks like the belly of a large fish from underwater - especially when someone's using arms to paddle - looks like a turtle from underneath.

Probably thinks the board is a seal and wants to eat it

At this point I'd be shitting myself.

Although they are vicious predators, they don't tend to attack or act aggressively towards human. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_whale_attacks_on_humans "On September 9, 1972, Californian surfer Hans Kretschmer reported being bitten by an orca at Point Sur; most maintain that this remains the *only** fairly well-documented instance of a wild orca biting a human"*

he's pad pad paddlin on heaven's door

The Orca was going to eat him, but then saw the camara and didn't want to get in any throuble. This is why all the Orcas must be enforced to wear a body camera all the time.

This just came to me, put a reflective surface on the bottom of the paddle board...

That's the apex predator of the ocean , I'd be scared shirtless.

It probably thought the board looked like a seal or something then realized it wasn't a meal

Looks like a young one, although it could just be the camera angle making it look small

Luckily the investigators were able to find this go pro with a severed hand still holding onto it.

No reported human death means they are just that good........you really think drowning killed all those people?

[–]anomalous_cowherd [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

They are like Dolphins. Smart enough not to leave witnesses.

"visiting", more like hunting.

Just like bears aren't as cuddly as teddy bears, orca's aren't as passive as normal whales.

Orca considering his lunch options.
