I'll admit, I shitposted on /pol/ a lot during the election, and on election night I laughed and laughed as Trump began to be the clear winner of the election, it was a lot of fun, but as soon as I went to sleep that night I realized how much we just fucked up. I knew many of his anti-scientific positions before the election, and I didn't actually vote for him, but I still thought the entire election was fun just to see how wrong every pundit / politician was about it.
That night though, I knew that this shit was not going to be good, I thought maybe he might appoint people that weren't anti-science, thought he would become more flexible and educate himself on important scientific issues like vaccines and climate change, but he didn't. He did the opposite and staffed his cabinet with climate change deniers and hired climate change deniers as science advisers.
I can only hope that people actually come out and vote in 2020, and that the democrats don't pick such a horrid candidate again. They need someone that can appeal to everyone that is free of political scandals.

Yes, I can honestly tell you she would have been better. I can honestly tell you that she would have picked a better cabinet, similar to Obamas. Would she have been a perfect president, or even a good one? Maybe, maybe not, but she would have been better than Donald. All I really care about is science education / science funding, and Donald has no care for any of that. I'm anti-illegal immigration though, but that's not a bend or break issue for me, science funding is much more important for the future of this country. She would have had a better environmental policy too, maybe the US could begin to take action and become a leader in phasing out fossil fuel usage.
I despised Hillary when she was running, not even because of the emails, but because she represented a lot of things I resent about US politics and political dynasties in general. Pretty much the same reasons I despised Jeb. Nepotism and the whole "it's my turn" angle to the highest office in the world. Her email scandal was so overplayed and overhyped too, it was such a shitstorm for so little reason. She should have just owned up to it from the start and it wouldn't have made her look so bad.
So basically, yes, Hillary would have kept most of Obama's policies in place, and American citizens would continue to be spied on, and people would continue to get droned, but really, has any of that stuff changed under Donald either? Our rights continue to be eroded away regardless of who's the president, and Republicans are guilty of most of it. All I know is she wouldn't have done stupid shit like cut the budget of the NIH, or the EPA, or hired a bunch of climate change deniers into her cabinet / advisers.
I think Donald's presidency has sparked a lot of people to get more politically active, on both sides of the spectrum, I think turnout for midterms will be much higher than in previous years.

It's more likely that people are demonized for how they behave.
There is of course, conflation.
For instance, in my country refugees from certain areas cause huge numbers of problems.
Because they are always referred to as "Refugees" rather than specifying their nationality, people over time conflate "Refugee" with this behavior, even though there is a world of difference between the individuals in the groups.
That said, a lot of it comes down to pretty firm and fundamental personality traits, perhaps defined by neurology more than socialization. By that I mean people might be putting the sociological cart before the scientific horse.
There are people who will be more open and risk taking, and people who are extremely risk averse.
For the former group, a 5% increase in the chance of getting harmed by a new arrival in their neighborhood means there is a 95% chance they won't be harmed. For the latter group, it's now simply a 5% chance greater risk of harm.
Putting large amounts of drugs in the food and water supply would solve your problems or mitigate them.

The crime statistics are suspect. For instance there are statistics that show white people get arrested more during winter, simply because there's less daylight hours in which cops can see peoples face and determine their skin color. Cops have a predisposition for picking out black people and white people tend to get away with crime more easily. Just look at wallstreet for an example of breeding ground for white criminals who don't get arrested or factored into those statistics.

Veeky Forums is not really the general public. People on Veeky Forums tend to be this weird mix of nihilistic realists who generaly don't think that life matters, but still operate in such a way that seeks the betterment of human civilization.
Due to this I've seen really interesting scientific discussions on here about homosexuality, abortion, and transexuality, and race, and religion that you could likely never have in real life due to the controversy. And that kind of openness of discussion free from moralistic restrictions is one I often crave. And can only really get here (even through the sheer volume of shitposting).
I'm rambling, but the point I was trying to make is that most people pick and choose what science they want to believe. Every single media outlet takes scientific research, interprets it as they see fit, and regurgitates it to the public. /pol/ does almost the exact same thing, but with the express purpose of pissing people off by forcing them to look at the internal contradictions and unsavory logical extremes of their worldview. That's obviously an overly philosophical interpretation of what /pol/ does, but regardless it's true to some extent. I don't think either of those things is any more anti-science than the other. Both are clearly manipulating it for their own goals. But I don't think the media is particularly anti-science despite being one of the largest contributors to scientific illiteracy and the spread of misinformation. I know people who work in media and they tend to be bright individuals who trust the scientific community and want to see it make greater advancements in our understanding. But due to being scientifically illiterate themselves they often assume that science is always on their side. And thus give intense scrutiny to science that disagrees with them, but will hand wave grossly exaggerated claims if they agree politically. I think /pol/ is similar, but tends to do so with some level of self awareness.
