I don't know how it all happened, maybe it's because of nostalgia, but when I first gotten to the subreddit, it did seem to just be focused on indulging in the absurdities of Reddit, and nothing else. Then when it started going through, the subreddit started to get more and more shoved into it's own ass. It seems like we have gone from making fun of overreactions of popular opinions, to counterjerking for the sake of counterjerking. It more and more gotten from the point of going "Ubisoft has never said they are not the devil" to topics like this.
All of this seemed to come just after people started to get angry about Fallout 4, then when the whole No Man's Sky controversy was happening, it turned it into overdrive. I recalled multiple non jerky topics being posted there, like "I just pre-ordered Fallout 4's Special Edition AMA!" While I didn't just unsubscribed, especially since the comments were still rather jerky, but unoriginal I.E. something like "WHY DID YOU JUST KILLED THE INDUSTRY!?!?!?!?!" would always plagued for that, it was the first start.
Then came in the long stretches of nothing happening, while I personally felt like there were many things to talk about, /r/gamingcounterjerk just kept to The Witcher 3, No man's Sky, and Fallout 4 long after the point of any of these games' relevance. Pretty much until from thier respective launch windows, until around the time the Nintendo Switch's/Breath of the Wild's launch windows it was generally the same things being posted over and over again. The saving graces like Red Dead Redemption 2 not being confirmed to have a PC release, and Titanfall 2/Call of Duty: Advanced warfare's release cycle being a thing, although it wouldn't take too long for people to start on the same old thing all over again.
What really started to tip things over was that it started to get political, seemingly out of nowhere. I don't know when it started to happen, but people started to get more blunt with calling out people who are anti-feminist. More and more /r/Gamingcirclejerk started to be unironic and spiteful in their hatred for people who's falls into certain political spectrum. While I'll just put it out there, say that their political opinions don't match mine, I tuned out people from both political parties for being too biased on their own side, I was perfectly fine when it was post about /r/kotakuinaction blaming "Social Justice Warriors" for basically nothing. But the bigger problem is simply I don't want my video game discussions to be politically motivated, neitherless when there are unironic posts in a subreddit that is supposed to be ironic that is when I draw the line. It seemed to only be a problem for a few weeks, and I thought it was going to die out after a while, like everything that isn't Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and No Man's Sky, but with Mass Effect Andromeda, and /r/metagamingcirclejerk more or less becoming a thing, I don't see this going anywhere but down especially since, at least one mod, seems perfectly fine with this sort of behavior.
TLDR: We have counterjerked so hard, we just started to jerk in the other direction.
