For the past 2 years, we've gone through flop after flop in the gaming world. We can lazily attribute this to hasty development and hardlined release dates, but could there be an ever larger contributing factor to why games are so terrible lately?
First, let's take a look at some amazing games that are still played today, despite being out for 2 or more years. Witcher 3 and Grand Theft Auto 5 for example, took a lot of heat for not being PC. The developers of these games were attacked with threats and insults because the story within their games was "misogynistic" and "homophobic". Many main stream review websites attacked these games for being inherently patriarchal. The infamous Gamespot Review of GTA5 comes to mind; a transexual reviewer refused to give GTA a 10 because the story and dialogue were not "PC enough". That same reviewer gave the game Gone Home a 10; a $20.00 game with bland gameplay that can be beaten in under 10 minutes.
Despite both GTA5 and W3 having a great story and incredible gameplay, they were widely critized for not being PC enough. Because of this, games that have been released lately appear to be tiptoeing around a lot of sensitive issues, and as a result, we have been given bland stories and gender neutral main character dialogue. Even Fallout 4, a great shooter packed with tons of content, has a montonous PC main story. For this reason, Fallout 4 will never be remembered like it's predecessor, Skyrim.
My whole point here is that developers seem to be putting sensitive PC issues at the forefront of their development process. They try and make their game cater to everyone, and as a result, we are given boring storylines, bland characters, and repetitive gameplay. We know that the fascist left can be intimidating, with their reputation for ruining the careers of people who don't agree with their agenda through social media assassination, but this tip-toeing is ruining games. Triple A games are becoming more and more like cell phone games and it's 100% the result of liberal authoritarianism in my estimation.
When was the last time a memorable video game character captured our hearts and minds? Ezio Auditore, Mario, Geralt, Thrall, Link, even the retro Lara Croft, are all history now. These days, we can't have a great character that embarks on a memorable adventure with extrodinary villains and romatic love interests. No, we can't have those things anymore because it might offend someone.
