The LB position. (self.reddevils)

In the last few weeks we have played a CB (Rojo) a RB (Darmian) and a CM/DM (Blind) at LB and while they can all play there none of them are natural there and it shows it's been a weak spot for us especially going forward.

All the while we have a perfectly fit LB (Shaw) sitting on the bench or in the stands. I think we can all agree he is or for some at the very least can be our best LB so why isn't he playing?

He's played 15 times this season sporadically and while he hasn't set the world a light at worst for me he's been as good as any LB we have played this season and needs a run in the team to gain his form back, especially after the injury he had.

So why isn't he playing do people seriously think he can't be trusted to play in the earlier FA Cup rounds or against Rostov who for great periods of time barley crossed into our half?

Or is his attitude the thing thats holding him back? People talk on here rightly that we don't see what goes on in training and behind the scenes but some people also think the worst and that because they aren't playing they must have terrible attitudes and/or work ethics, that might be the case it might not.

When Martial largely carried us last season did he have a bad attitude and/or work ethic then or did it just appear when Jose arrived and he kept getting dropped for a while? I think this attitude thing is over blown and affecting the team especially at LB were we are struggling.

I'm not saying for a second I know more than Jose or his staff or what goes on behind the scenes this is just my 2 cents on LB, I seriously doubt Shaw has that bad of and attitude or work ethic and needs to be playing for the better or the team and himself.

I feel like I see one of these every other day. In summary of this, and every other one:

  • Darmian is shit
  • Blind is slow but intelligent
  • Rojo is worlds better as a CB
  • Shaw is promising but is a shame circumstances has gotten in his way.

Shaw's the best LB at the club. He's got the potential to be one of the best in the league for years to come.

Unless there's a serious hurdle, I'm confident Mou will see that he's back into the starting XI soon enough. It happened with Mkhi and it happened with Martial.

In the meantime, I actually think that Blind/Young/Darmian are adequate back ups.

I think Blind is far too slow at LB and it slows down our play. Darmian is lacking going forwards sadly and is a better RB. Young has done well to be fair to him.

Bit off topic, but don't think it's fair to say Blind is just a CM. He's had extended stays in several positions in his professional career. He played LB for Ajax, winning eredivisie player of the year, then was moved to CM the next season. He plays LB / LWB for he Netherlands and has played LB / CB for us now for almost 3 years.

Back to your question - Jose has said several times that Shaw isn't playing because he isn't doing what is asked of him in his system, while Darmian and Blind are.

Shaw is better than both of them individually, but both are obviously doing better than him tactically in training and are following Jose's instructions better. It's not as simple as 'Shaw is better therefore he should play'.

Jose is always very strict on players who aren't following his instructions and haven't adapted to him tactically. We've seen it with Martial and Micki as well. It's really fucking annoying that Shaw isn't playing, but In reality we know fuck all about what Jose is asking of his LB and what Shaw is doing / not doing in training.
