"Newham, in east London, had the highest instances of acid attacks with 398 in the last six years."
from Wikipedia - "Newham has the lowest percentage of White British residents of all of London's boroughs."
Coincidence?
[-]SockCuck 201 points - [removed] (3 children)
have you been to newham? I was there once. canning town. It's one of the only places in london i've been that felt like an actual, no fucking about ghetto. fuck newham.
[-]viagrapope 38 points - [removed]
Canning town is pretty grim actually. Although it's a bit more mixed up and has more of the older black and white London populations.
[-]The_exeption 10 points - [removed]
Newham has changed since the Olympic games though. Alot!
[-]Mr_Annette 2 points - [removed] (1 children)
You felt like you were in a ghetto in canning town? 😂
[-]SockCuck 10 points - [removed]
to be fair it was dark and shit weather which i think contributed to the feeling. Also i'm a privileged cunt.
[-]Snaz5 112 points - [removed] (2 children)
I think it's definitely related to race/nationality only because, compared at least to the west, acid attacks seem to be a fairly common form of assault in the Mid East/south Asia. Not necessarily because they are more prone to violence, just that acid attacks aren't really something that westerners are familiar with.
[-]Black_Hitler 59 points - [removed] (1 children)
I live in the U.S. and I don't even know where to get acid that's strong enough to melt a face. Can you just buy it at a hardware store or something? Seems like something that would be strictly controlled.
[-]saltyholty 51 points - [removed] (2 children)
Drain cleaner and water in a sports drink bottle, according to the newspapers.
[-]Black_Hitler 22 points - [removed] (3 children)
Shit! I didn't know drain cleaner was that strong!
[-]saltyholty 39 points - [removed] (1 children)
That's part of the reason it seems to be growing. Gangs have only just figured out how easy it is to make.
[-]Black_Hitler 20 points - [removed]
God damn, that's grim.
[-]Beard_of_Valor 21 points - [removed]
I used it to help my poor beard-shavings sink clear up without disassembling plumbing in my rented apartment, and I read the bottle first. The warnings are stark. I was pretty sure it could melt me. I put on pants before I even opened the bottle.
[-]QQMau5trap 3 points - [removed] (1 children)
Natrium hydroxide is one of if not the strongest base. Or Kalium hydroxide is strong too.
[-]Black_Hitler 6 points - [removed] (1 children)
I mean I knew you have to be really careful not to spill shit like Drano when you're using it but I didn't know it could melt flesh. Jesus.
[-]SnappyTWC 9 points - [removed] (1 children)
It's actually worse than acid to get in your eye. With acid you can wash it out, but strong bases like sodium hydroxide turn the fluid in the eye into a sort of jelly which keeps spreading. We had to watch a video about it in one of my chemistry courses at uni, it's scary shit.
[-]Gertiel 6 points - [removed]
Good lord. And to think I've cheerfully poured it down my drains to treat hair clogs. Next time I will definitely be wearing safety goggles.
[-]_AlreadyTaken_ 13 points - [removed] (2 children)
Drain cleaner is a base as far as I know, not an acid. Pouring acid down a drain would be very bad for metal pipes.
So you'd need an acid to neutralize it, like vinegar.
[-]Lost4468 10 points - [removed]
I'd imagine bases are grouped in with acids under acid attacks. Getting strong sodium hydroxide also sounds like a pretty plausible way for most of them to happen. I doubt very many of the attacks actually use strong acids and cause massive damage.
[-]RealSolidAdvice 3 points - [removed]
It's just called an acid attack so people understand it. If you called it a base attack, people would think someone was getting attacked with a bass guitar
[-]Anticlimax1471 6 points
Globally, 80% of acid attack victims are women, but in London, 70% of acid attack victims are men. That, and other points raised in the article, suggest this is heavily gang-related violence.
[-]The_Foe_Hammer 7 points - [removed] (1 children)

"Asian"
I think you mean 'Muslim', when was the last time some Chinese guy threw acid in a woman's face for rejecting his advances?
[-]sterlingarchersdrink 135 points - [removed] (2 children)
To brits, Asian includes the Middle Eastern folks (which is in Asia)
[-]SisterHyde1888 106 points - [removed] (1 children)
Actually, to Brits, "Asians" are people from the Middle East and Southern Asia, every time I hear them speak about a Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Thai person, they always say "East Asian".
[-]Milksteak_To_Go 16 points - [removed] (1 children)
Yup, East Asian or 'oriental'. As an American living in London, I was thrown for a loop the first time I heard someone use that term in casual conversation.
[-]flotsamandalsojetsam 3 points - [removed]
I've heard that oriental is considered a derogatory term in America, but here in the UK we use it freely to disambiguate between Asians from Pakistan/India etc and China/Japan/Korea.
[-]monkey_biter798 25 points - [removed] (3 children)
It's not wrong, just intentionally misleading.
It's like if you were to say, "An American threw acid in someone's face."
But then find out that you're referring to a Canadian or a Peruvian. You wouldn't be incorrect, because Canada and Peru are both nations in the Americas and could classify as "American," but we all know people would first assume it was a US national you're referring to when you use that term.
[-]vonmonologue 17 points - [removed]
It's not intentionally misleading. It's British vernacular.
Britain had an empire that included India and chunks of the arabic world. When they say "Asian" they refer to the Asian parts of their former empire. The other part, east asians, we're called "orientals" before that term become non-PC.
In the US we do the opposite. We had stronger ties to China and Japan and SE Asia since we were right across the Pacific from each other, so we refer to east Asians as "asians" and south asians as "Indians" and Asia Minor as "the middle east"
It's literally just a difference in language, not some sjw conspiracy in the media to hide the perpetrators. Everyone in the UK who reads that article will know what "Asian" means.
[-]rustypig 36 points - [removed]
It's not intentionally misleading at all if you actually live in the UK. In the UK Asian is predominately used to describe people from the middle east or south asian. If you say "an Asian person" to someone from the UK what immediately comes to mind is someone with brown skin. Just because you don't know that doesn't make it intentionally misleading.
[-]Pigeon-Toad 36 points - [removed] (1 children)
TIL I learned it's intentionally misleading for British people to use their own language.
[-]Tomhap 20 points - [removed]
Today I learned I learned
[-]poptart2nd 33 points - [removed] (1 children)
If you actually read the article before spouting your racist nonsense, you'd know that the victims are largely men and it's largely due to gang activity.
[-]handsome_hell_ 27 points - [removed] (1 children)
How is it racist? What race does he think is inferior in this scenario?
[-]jordansgay 31 points - [removed]
I guess calling out violent followers of a specific religion is racist now
[-]forevertomorrowagain 10 points - [removed]
thank you
it's time to say 'fuck political correctness.'
Asians are not the problem.
It's avery specific group responsible for this shit.

[-]AintNoFortunateSon 7 points (1 children)
Newham had the second highest child poverty rate across London (41%) and the highest proportion of children in working families receiving tax credits (44%).
Coincidence?
[-]The-red-Dane 2 points
Doubtfully. I don't see how they'd be able to afford acid if they're living in poverty. /s
[-]bold_truth 48 points - [removed] (1 children)
And people wonder why populism is on the rise.
[-]Truth_ 94 points (2 children)
Because it's been about 90 years since it last cropped up in force and we've forgotten why I it's a huge mistake.
[-]MacroSolid 104 points (1 children)
It was, but we overcorrected. Racism is bad, but pretending that minorities can do no wrong is also bad.
Now we're overcorrecting again, because sanity is just boring somehow...
[-]SorcererWithAToaster 41 points (4 children)
There's a difference in believing minorities can do no bad and believing that you can't* hold entire demographics accountable for the actions of a few.
[-]cautinoctuae 25 points
There's also a difference between not holding entire demographics accountable for the actions of a few and handicapping one's ability to solve the problem at hand by willfully ignoring demographic trends relevant to said problem.
[-]DodgerDoan 6 points
It doesn't matter which is better, both are clearly stupid.
[-]VelveteenAmbush 3 points
There's a difference between collective punishment and just not extending the privilege of immigration to certain demographics.
[-]send_me_NWO_stories 9 points
When entire countries have their infrastructure destroyed and thousands of civilians killed, supposedly under the pretext of correcting the actions of a few terrorists, I would say that entire demographics have absolutely continued being held accountable for the actions of a few. PR is very strong, but I sometimes get the impression people today think they are so much more enlightened than their ancestors and I think this is very far from the reality our collective actions speak to.
[-]bold_truth 47 points - [removed] (1 children)
Not saying its right but when you allow people into your country they don't respect your culture and rights and you are shackled by PC this is what you get.
[-]ottoman_jerk 10 points - [removed] (2 children)
You're right, the world never should have let themselves be colonized by the British.
[-]pantheismnow 16 points - [removed] (1 children)
Difference there is the British did it by force and when they did it they did generally fuck countries up - look at the treatment of Native Americans for example.
[-]IJustThinkOutloud 6 points - [removed] (1 children)
Exactly, there were no half-measures. No populism. It was just "This is under british rule now, if you disagree we will kill you because that is how british law works and this land is now governed by british law." Clean breaks heal stronger.
[-]pantheismnow 4 points - [removed]
> there were no half-measures.
There were a bit of half measures. The British did allow the native laws not in opposition to their own to remain in force generally when they created colonies or took over lands. There was a fair amount compromise required by both parties, though of course it was the Privy Council that would be the supreme court for the claims stemming from either group, and they understandably had a pro-British leaning {Not even pro-colonialist leaning, though the two were often in alignment}

Domestic violence is a very common problem in every part of the world, acid attacks is just one subset of this.
[-]fabhellier 9 points - [removed] (1 children)
Lol I was excepting some statistics. One story. Definitely a misconception.
[-]XHF1 11 points - [removed]
Read the article, 70 percent male victims and this is largely gang related.
[-]jookymundo 78 points (2 children)
Hmmm, Pakistanis are only the fourth largest ethnic minority by population in Newman. But good attempt at pretending to be informed on the matter.
[-]mattbrvc 18 points
That is a very even mixed bag, most ethnic groups are around 10%-15%.
[-]Pappylander 5 points
I'm not a Westerner, I just wanted to answer based on all I've read on international articles and whatnot cuz I was tired of all the smug, sarcastic rhetoric they keep spouting about. Thanks for informing though.

Redbridge- 'the leafy borough', 35% white British (and from experience, many of those who would put white British on the census are actually 'white other European' etc or due to the significant Jewish background are frankly not the stereotypical white British.) and I think highest proportion of Pakistani residents. Awesome borough, got a very diverse community of Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan, Chinese (growing), Eastern European, etc and an old Jewish community as well
[-]TripleNations 2 points
Knightsbridge
[-]verybakedpotatoe [score hidden]
Given the lower portion of the population they make up, minorities would have to actually create closed communities to accomplish this.
They lack the numbers, population density, drive, and purpose to do it. Closed communities are not typically good for anything other than appealing to a few big dollar racists looking to buy homes.
[-]ThatDistantStar 33 points - [removed]
Throwing acid has never been a tradition of poor whites.

Nah, it's those damn Protestants behind this, I just know it. Such a violent religion.
