They are using microwaves, and WiFi, as ways to monitor people and lofi imaging devices even - there's papers on it!

But this is 9D chess:

HAHAH SHE SAID MICROWAVES CAN SPY ON YOU. No. Just your PHONE. Music player. TV. Fridge. Car. Thermostat. Smoke detector. Vibrator. Cat. Doorbell. BUT MICROWAVE!??!! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA

Hahaha Trump is so dumb, he said Hillary deleted 39,000 emails, it was just 33,000!

Hahaha, the Bowling Green massacre never happened, it was just al-Quaeda supporting Iraqi immigrants planning a terror attack arrested!

My favorite one (from Europe): It's not the refugees who came this summer doing the terror attacks and the raping, it's the (children of) Muslim immigrants who came decades ago! (That's so much better. They've been in Europe for decades, were born there, lived there, and still are not integrated, that's definitely an argument supporting that the millions coming now will become integrated, peaceful, assimilated shortly!)

There is a known exploit of this, Realtek's HD audio chipsets can dynamically redefine what their ports are used for, its supposed to make it more user friendly for normies who can't read labels.

When you plug a new 3.5mm jack in, a popup appears and asks you what you what feature you want routing to that port.

Anyway, since this is all in software, the NSA have an exploit for triggering a port redefinition.

You can get a plug in microphone and cut the microphone part just leaving wires. This would trick the computer into using that source as the microphone but it wouldn't be picking up anything real.

[–]good_guy_submitterRI 16 ポイント17 ポイント  (11子コメント)

Which can be uninstalled, but if they can access the system they can just reinstall them.

And even if you physically remove the microphone, then they can still track every key you type and everything that is viewable on your screen if they want to.

Hell in Windows 10 Microsoft even tells you it logs every keystroke and sends that information back to its servers unless you disable that feature. However magically every time there is an update that feature seems to turn itself back on somehow.

TL;DR - If you want security don't use windows. Don't use Ubuntu. Don't use Mac. Use some other offshoot of Linux.

Russia started a mini trade war with China a few years ago because it found the Chinese were fitting bugs to appliances they were sending to Russia. l made a post on it the other day and it is amazing how people seem to have forgotten about the smart fridges that were found to be spying and sending out 100000's of spam emails. In the post l link articles showing this has been well known for years and even Petraeus back when he was CIA director admitting the CIA was spying through appliances ‘Transformational’ is an overused word, but I do believe it properly applies to these technologies,” Petraeus enthused, “particularly to their effect on clandestine tradecraft.”

All those new online devices are a treasure trove of data if you’re a “person of interest” to the spy community. Once upon a time, spies had to place a bug in your chandelier to hear your conversation. With the rise of the “smart home,” you’d be sending tagged, geolocated data that a spy agency can intercept in real time when you use the lighting app on your phone to adjust your living room’s ambiance"

I think the vast majority of people are completely misunderstanding this whole thing, in that I believe she DID mean the actual microwave oven is what's spying on you, and that she IS right about it, just not in the sense that it sounds at face value.

In one of his rants on his show from a day or 2 ago, Alex Jones mentioned the comment from whoever it was at the CIA from years ago talking about how they'll spy on you through your dishwasher. A dishwasher sounds as crazy as a microwave, because why would they have cameras or microphones built into them? The answer is they don't- but they have circuit boards to operate all of the electronics in them, and on those circuit boards are various chips that can be tuned to various radio frequencies and pick up a variety of things. That captured signal can then be transmitted through the electrical line, since the device is plugged in for power already, and once it's tapped into the power grid, it can be sent anywhere. Sending data over electrical lines is easily possible of course, even for consumers via powerline adapters.

That's how these seemingly innocuous devices are able to spy on you without needing its own camera or microphone. So YES, that device is spying on you, it's just that it's piggybacking off of something else, like the phone that you have next to you at all times.

This is true, with a little switch of the wiring to change an output transducer to an input transducer. At one of my previous units, we had a microphone made by Yamaha that used to be a speaker.

The idea behind the SubKick is ingeniously simple. Yamaha took a 6.5" speaker, mounted it in a 10" drum shell and reverse-wired it to an XLR jack to convert the speaker diaphragm into a microphone diaphragm. This huge diaphragm allows the SubKick to pick up the low end that a normal microphone can't. And as a dynamic microphone it can handle extremely high SPLs.

One day I got bored, turned the thing on it's side and lightly used a pair of drumsticks to do a roll. It sounded really cool, like 16th note bass drum stuff you'd hear in heavy metal normally played with a double pedal.

[–]tjhuffmanPA 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (0子コメント)

You can use the speaker in your earbuds to record (pretty shitty) audio just by plugging into the mic port and cranking up some gain settings.

Mic/speakers are really just 2 sides of the same coin. They just convert an analog signal to sound and vice versa. Works both ways.

[–]Fulliotomatix 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (0子コメント)

What is so funny about this is that I am not sure we really understood the context that Kellyanne had in mind when she said "microwave".

Everyone uses that term "microwave" to mean the pretty common kitchen appliance that heats up food. But it is actually a technology that can also be used to transmit voice and data. I used to work in telecoms and we put up "microwave towers" in South America that were used to for communication purposes. They transmit a huge amount of data but need line of sight to the next tower to work.

So, its possible that she could have been referring to the technology and if she was then she's absolutely correct. Even if she is not, I believe it would be possible to use the technology in a kitchen "microwave" for purposes other than heating food.

It blew my mind that they were laying into her for the microwave quote. She's said some silly things before but without having the full context I would have taken this statement to be hyperbole based on an increasing amount of unwanted surveillance and recent leaks. There are quotes from previous Directors of the intel agencies saying they don't even need to try that hard to get into people's homes when they are bringing these devices in themselves in ever increasing numbers. Just makes no sense to me that out of all the things they'd go after her for it was the microwave thing.

If you're posting on reddit, I think it's fairly safe to assume everything there is to know about you is already readily available online. The correct answer is post constantly. Have conversations with your TV and microwave about helping aliens overthrow the United Nations. Corrupt your paper trail by just spewing forth garbage. Make the system choke on its own vomit.

Exactly. Excuuuuuuse Kellyanne for not realizing microwaves are the only appliance without a fucking camera in it yet. Let's just deflect and play defense for the CIA in the name of pushing #FakeAmerican ideology.

are we not doing magathreads any more?

"Kitchen appliances" are the CIA's gaslighting response to the leak. They are desperately trying to get mainstream to word associate the spy leak with "My toaster is spying on me lol?". We should resist the disinformation and not share it IMO.

Ignoring a real capability is foolish. They already have our phones, laptops, and any camera or microphone on the market. Now, we have household appliances that are hooked up to the Internet. For example, NEST devices can now be used for home security. They started out as thermostats that could be hooked up to the Internet, and now include cameras. If cameras, why not microphone controllers??

It is just not that far-fetched, especially with a billion-dollar budget.

Little typo, you got SIRA instead of SIRI

Hello from r/all

I don't understand. CIA leaks specially said that they are able to listen to any "smart" device that uses the cloud to process voice recognition data when you give it commands, and that they are "always listening".

How come Samsung TV or Siri's voice recognition can be used to collect all voice data, while a voice activated smart microwave can't?

This microwave oven is connected to the internet and listens to your voice 24/7 to recognize commands

No it does not have a "computer" processing your voice inside, like every software that can use an API with 3 lines of code, it sends voice data to somewhere online to be processed and turned into "string" type objects, then uses if else statements to check if those voice commands match the commands required to run the microwave or how long.

"journalists" who have no idea about software or technology shouldn't talk about it at all.

1 million women march on DC because they think they're being treated unfairly, here is a successful woman who made history and they treat her like absolute dog shit.

Another example from the far left, they only care about those who are 100% in their camp

Should mention all smart TVs, not just Samsung. Some companies know how to hide their secrets better than other countries.

ACTUALLY

yes it can. "smart appliances" store metadata when they are used, and some are wifi enabled. The metadata can determine when it was used, its temperature, what setting (meat vs pizza vs reheat). Hell, you can even buy croc pots and pressure cookers that are wifi enabled. I shit you not. Check amazon.

all this metadata can be used to show someone was in the residence, someone was interacting with the appliance, etc

just because there isn't a camera or mic on it doesn't mean it isn't gathering and storing and possibly transmitting data

tl;dr yes your microwave can spy on you

Kellyanne is a hot milf. Sorry, not sorry. Liberal ugly whales are and should be jealous of her.

The microwave was actually a tv that identified as a microwave. I can't believe the assumptions made here.

So low-energy and backwards to joke about Kellyanne's "microwave" comment. Especially because it seemed clear to me that she was make a joke - or generalizing, to make a point.

Last week Wikileaks releases a whole series of CIA documents, and the media and internet is all over "CIA spying on us through Alexa, Smart TVs, even Smart refrigerators!"

Then Kellyanne is asked about "evidence of wiretapping" & says that she isn't privy to the specifics but mentions it could have been any number of different surveillance tactics through any number of devices, "even a microwave".

Every normal person understands what she's talking about. And so do most of the people who are shit-talking. They just wouldn't admit it.
