lol that face is straight out of Oblivion.

It... It's you! The Hero of Kvatch! This is truly an honor.

That face is straight out of the Sims...

My first thought exactly

Triss looks like a realistic fantasy.

That character from Mass Effect: Andromeda looks like someone I spotted at the DMV.

They're both realistic in their own way.

You saw someone with oddly glowing hair that cast no shadow at the DMV?

You havent?

Last time I was at the DMV a woman's water broke while she was sitting next to me and covered my shoes in amniotic fluid. She just looked at me and shrugged, like "what can you do" and left.

Anything goes at the DMV.

No, that's actually more akin to "PeopleOfWalMart.com"

Yeah, people at WalMart can't usually afford proper shading and rendering.

Source: Go to WalMart. Am barely shaded better than Minecraft Steve on the Xbox 360.

Eva Green with red hair? #teamtriss

I just watched The Salvation on Netflix. In it, Eva Green plays a mute. She spent the movie acting with her eyes.

Eva Green is probably the best eyeball actress working today.

You should go search Sophie Dee. She is also an excellent... 'eye actress'. Yes.. that is what she is.

I read your comment without knowing her by name and thought "no way, it's gotta be Vanessa Ives." Googled it, yep.

She does a lot of eyeball acting in Penny Dreadful, huh? I'll give it a watch some time.

Here's another little bit of Eva Green trivia that nobody asked for: She is the only actress that I know of that simulated "reverse cowgirl" sex in a major Hollywood release. So if you want to see reverse cowgirl on screen, you can either watch porn, or you can watch Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For.

Put that on a Snapple cap and drink it.

Didn't Salma Hayek do that it desperado?

Ya. And she acts great with the eyes on her face too.

Like how you realistically want to be with Triss, and avoid the other one, because she thinks there are more than 2 genders.

Even in the trailer Sheppard looks very derpy.

I think the eyes in ME:A are just off. They look flat and dead.

Which is funny, because the people who made the original Mass Effect talked about how important it was to get the eyes right in a model.

Witcher 3 struck the right balance. Horizon while technically better uncanny valleys me something fierce. The kid version of Aloy in particular creeped me the feck out. I've never wanted a tutorial to be over faster in my life.

The kid version was weird, but I don't think there's anything strange about her adult model, or anyone else's in the game.

I thought they amazingly hit just over the dip in the uncanny valley... I still see it, but it's good enough that they are starting to crawl out. Give it another couple years and this type of tech will mean realistic characters

The animations on the mouths in that game are very... odd. The faces look amazing though

Why do the people in this game all look like shit

One problem is that the eyes of the characters are just too bright. Turning them a little bit darker makes them already look a lot less insane (quickly made comparison). The models are still bad, but at least they no longer look completely crazy.

I fixed it a little further. I added some ambient occlusion, shadows and I fixed the color of the face.

Wow now she's just ugly and not uncanny. You should head up Bioware art department.

I think the cheeks are what makes it look so weird. The face is too fat. But really Nice work.

yeah she looks like she was freshly stung by a bee

Yeah, I agree. She has hamster cheecks and a weird jaw line. Her eyes are a little bit too ^ ^ and her mouth is too big.

Oh. Wow. That is actually a much bigger difference than I thought it'd make.

My first thought was 'those eyes need some shadow, it doesn't look natural D:'

You know, like they are white marbles rolling around in the eye socket. Except the eyelids don't cast shadows. It's so jarring. (Also this might be my settings but it feels like a lot of these 'white' skin textures on faces look like some kind of moon landscape with numerous craters. I get that skin isn't supposed to be perfectly smooth but damn)

I see a lot of CG-based artists who are good on the technical side and can add a lot of new detail and accurate sculpts, but they don't know the fundamentals of art. Appeal and art direction are much harder to do than copying from a scan or photograph.

Also consider the uncanny valley. The closer you get to artificiality-created realism the more difficult it is to get away with shoddily-done models and be convincing. There's just a bunch of micro-expressions and movements we expect from real life but since we only see glassy-eyed people here it feels very wrong.

This is a fucking player-character with pink hair and bright red eyes, for fuck's sake. Are people really believing that this is an NPC in the game?

The game has some horrendous human animation/modeling issues, there is no doubt about that. But comparing a player-made character to a major character in Witcher 3? Fucking really, /r/gaming?

Sad that I had to go this far down to see this. People need to chill with the circle jerk. It's getting old fast.

My friends and I are EASILY uglier than this Mass Effect character model, I feel the #immersion

They don't. Some of them look like normal ugly people, cause you know, normal people aren't drop dead gorgeous babes.

This whole drama is overblown. The animations are shit. The graphics are shit. But for whatever reason people decide to get angry because not all the women are masturbate material and that somehow means bioware are SJWs now.

Is that an npc in the game or the player character?

That is a customized player character that someone chose to make look like that. This picture is not really indicative of actual characters in game.

Player character. It's a stupid comparison

While I agree that ME:A's animations look like they motion captured a shimpanzee and not a human, this comparison is shit.

Is a "shrimpanzee" a shrimp and a chimp together? If so, how did that happen? Physically, I mean. And how did a shrimp fall in love with a chimp? That love could never last

That love could never last

That love was never meant to last, but for that one passionate evening, their love was illuminating the night sky like the brightest star never could.

I think maybe they just wanted to monkey around.

Why? Both come from AAA companies and the shit one is a more recent game even, from a hugely popular game series no less

I heard from a friend in the industry that they had mo-cap problems because the actors had a bad crash on the way to the studio which affected the production for weeks. This is why the animations aren't as smooth as the actors were wearing neck braces and were a bit stiff with the arms out to the side.

Yeah, but mocap is mostly used as a starting point for animation. There is so much work involved to make mocap look good, it's unbelievable.

Source: I work in the VFX industry and has dealt with mocap in numerous occasions.

that is a female Krogan, but i think the voice is really weird.

that has to be the dumbest excuse I heard, UNLESS the animators are a bunch of interns who have never animated in their life before.

well it's true, I wrote it on the internet. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This isn't even a mocap problem, this is a "every preset looks like shit and there's no way to fix it" problem.

Not really. Bioware has no excuses for the crap character animations they put out anymore when the Witcher guys have stepped up to plate and shown us how its really done.

Interesting. I don't see any animations in this post.

Not a fair comparison since it's witcher's crafted singular NPC vs what is either a player created or a NPC with like 1 line of dialogue.
Either way if bioware goes the Inquisition route with shit fetch quest that is a whole another problem which seems to be what is happening...

I've been hearing good things about the gameplay of ME:A at least, but everyone agrees that the animations on humans is...well...shit.

I'm not sure that they're comparable, witcher has a set of static and set character models, whereas mass effect has to account for customization and individuality. To be honest while the witcher had gorgeous NPCS they also had a lot of repeating ones that hurt immersion for me, I mean the old ladies were literally the same character throughout the game and half of the cities were inhabited solely by Michael Cera clones, they even repeated some of the minor bosses which was genuinely confusing.

Did Bioware borrow the Oblivion character creator?

The mages in The Witcher use magic to enhance their appearances. The poor sods in ME:A live in a low-g environments, that's not good for a human body. Watch The Expanse :P

Love that show.

Also, if you're interested the books are phenomenal

I thought the shot from Andromeda was of a player-created character. It's not exactly difficult to make an outlandishly ugly character with custom character creators these days.

http://www.abload.de/img/unbenannt1i98dv.jpg

Why compare an ugly create a character to one face scanned and made by an artist?

It's a more realistic rendering of an ugly person.

I'm still going to reserve judgment on this. There was a lot of concern about Dragon Age Inquisition before it came out but that turned out enjoyable enough. It was completely left in the dust by Witcher 3 a few months later but I enjoyed my time with it.

But yeah animation wise this looks rough. Still I'll wait for the reviews.

To be fair, I think someone just made a really ugly main character.

Much to Bethesda and Biowares dissapointment, Witcher 3 is still the standard that they will have to measure themselves against... And fail miserably if Andromeda, Inquisition and Fallout 4 is the best they can do.

Are you talking about graphics or you somehow already know something about Andromeda being shit?

Inquisition was a good game.

I liked FO4 too...

It wasn't a bad game, but it was a shit Fallout if you played the earlier. They stripped the game of role playing aspects.

Meanwhile The Witcher 3 was a deep RPG with character morality elements and an incredible story line, and it took the gaming world by storm and set the bar much, much higher all of a sudden.

The point is, if you enjoy FO4 then I'm fine with that I guess. But if you are telling me that's the best you as a developer can do then games like that will fail horribly in a comparison with a game like The Witcher 3, BOTW or H ZD.

The point is, if you enjoy FO4 then I'm fine with that I guess.

OH MY GOD THANKS MAN!

Was worried.

Yup. People bitching about it don't realise not all rpgs are meant to be the same. DA:I is very much like an mmo in its map, with a good storyline (not going to blow anyone away, mind), and a very good world. If you're there for the sex, the pretty colours or good looking people, you're going to be pretty disappointed. If you go into it focusing on exploring, not treating it like a checklist? It's very, very good.

Tl;dr : as with life, you get out what you put in. Treat it like achievement hunter 2017 and you'll hate it. Take time to explore and talk to people? You're golden.

wow i hated it ... it killed any interest in dragon age I had left.

Yeah, but when Witcher 3 is in the conversation, good isn't enough. You need great.

Inquisition was great though, not The Witcher 3 great, but great.

I felt bad for DA:I

It was a fine RPG at the end of 2014. Solid 8, borderline 9 if it was your thing. 6 months later TW3 comes out and immediately makes all previous RPG's obsolete.

What's disappointing is that from everything I'm hearing, Bioware didn't notice that the bar has been raised.

makes all previous RPG's obsolete

That's funny, people are still playing Skyrim more (a 5 year old game) than Witcher. Check the steam charts

If Witcher 3 is what other RPGs should emulate, I think I will no longer be a RPG fan. It bored the fuck out of me.

I think that's a natural result of the direction they went for some people. Most RPG's today let you chose who you are, what you do, and what story you make for yourself. TW3, tells you who you are, what you do, and how you do it. The result is a world that feels alive and your character feels alive in it. Side quests and witcher contracts are all relevant to Geralt so they can all tell a story and feel rewarding. I think they did a fantastic job with providing you a character and role worth playing, with a great story.

The inherent risk: if you don't like Geralt, what he is/does, or his story, this game won't work for you. If he does, it's the richest experience you can get in RPG's until perhaps BotW (haven't played, but it sounds like one of those all-time titles that raises the bar once again).

I get the story and character, I've played some DnD where I've essentially been Geralt, and the story was decent. The gameplay is where I had a major problem with it, mostly because the only real way to do any damage in combat is to swing your sword a couple of times, then backstep, and repeat x10. The core gameplay loop didn't draw me in.

yeah, you can't get away from his swords, unfortunately. Investing in the crossbow doesn't seem viable, even if it is, its still just to complement his sword play. I did a sign build for the highest difficulty which ultimately just made for a very versatile play style that encouraged you to use Geralt's full ability kit. I found that very fun. It is a little too possible to get by with pure swordplay which can get flat and 1 dimensional very quickly. So I can see where you're coming from.

I do think there are a lot of valid directions you can go for game play in the RPG genre that is not like the Witcher 3 (single vs party, real-time action vs turn based, etc). I do think they raised the bar in crafting a large living world filled with meaningful content though.

i'd break it down as a good game for a dragon age fan for the lore, an ok game on its own, and a bad game for someone new to rpg's

Nicely put. Not a fan of the franchise. Got bored with Inquisition pretty quickly.

Poland itself appears to have a strong passion for gaming entertainment and can see the artistic side of it. I mean shit, the government gave CDPR millions to carry on the standard they've set. If that aint passion then i dunno what is.

I hope they get everything they need to keep raising the bar and shaking up the gaming world. I'm on my third playthrough of the witcher... granted first two were on xbox and third is on pc, so it feels like a totally different game. And I'm finally going through the expansions on this playthrough.

Don't start the main Hearts of Stone quest until you can dedicate to it. Don't veer from it once you do start it. It's amazing, but works so much better if you treat it like the only thing happening at the time.

I don't think we will see a RPG as great as Witcher 3 anytime soon. I feel like comparing games to Witcher 3 is like cheating.

I JUST finished Blood & Wine, and finally finished the entirety of The Witcher 3 yesterday.

Orianna's face is one of the most stunningly gorgeous video game faces I've ever seen. The subtleties in her skin, her facial animation, she's a marvel of animation. Seriously.

Then I watch Giant Bomb play some Andromeda live yesterday, and holy fucking shit. Everything about that game looks like hot garbage. The animation is worse than a Bethesda game, the textures look AWFUL, the voice acting is unbelievably terrible, and the writing is genuinely bad.

I'm not some Mass Effect stan, either. I was just taken aback by how a team probably 1/3 the size of Bioware, and in development years ago, utterly decimated everything I'm seeing from this new Mass Effect from a design standpoint. It's amazing how bad everything about it seems to be.

I've played through probably half of mankind divided, and I hadn't really even noticed how bad the facial animations are, and I think that's probably because until the last few years, game face animations haven't been great. Maybe a stand out here or there, but for the most part I think my brain is just used to not expecting games to have great face animation so when it isn't good, it's easy to give it a pass.

Yeah, i remember being blown away by the subtlety in Witcher 3's body language. The lipsyncing was alright.

The only games that have particularly good facial animations all use that fancy mocap stuff. See: Heavy Rain, The Last of Us, LA Noir.

Those giant eyes and lips are hilarious.

To be fair, everything looks like shit compare to Witcher 3

Honestly enough with the whole "The Witcher ia the best game ever its better than x", the graphics on Andromeda ar fine. Why does it matter so much

I'm not expecting Mass Effect: Andromeda to be a huge disappointment, but I'm also expecting it to fall short of expectations. Not a total flop of a game, but it's definitely going to have it's shortcomings compared to other games we've played.

They made the ME:3 lead writer the lead designer on this game, what do you expect.

I've read at least two previews talking about how the writing is a disaster -- shocking.

And my reddit feed is inundated with bad animation/character model links.

I really want this game to be good -- maybe just the early game sucks? Wishful thinking, but honestly, I'd be pretty surprised if it was anything other than a big letdown.

I guess we should reserve judgment until the final reviews are in, but it's not looking good.

Ever since Drew Karpyshyn left ME has been trash. You have the same guy who wrote KOTOR, the Darth Bane novel trilogy, ME1, the ME novel trilogy (which is AWESOME btw), why on earth wouldn't you just let him write the whole thing?

Oh wait because it's a post-2008 EA/Bioware game that's interested in cashing in on an incomplete game and ramming a social agenda down everybody's throat for the smallest investment possible. I expect a giant, flaming, purple haired, stronk independent letdown.

social agenda?

non straight-white male included in video games = social agenda

That's the narrative. Stay with it.

Couldn't agree more.

I find it absolutely baffling they don't prioritize getting top notch writers for big-budget RPGs.

FF13 was a dumpster fire, too. The dialogue was atrocious, the story was terrible, the characters uninteresting. SWTOR has been a mixed bag. The Rise of the Hutt Cartel was awful, then Shadow of Revan was quite good, giving me hope (the wookie/droid combo was great), then Knights of the Fallen/Eternal Empire was just pure garbage.

There's so much great writing going on in television and novels right now, yet movies and videogames seem like a black hole, beyond a few exceptions like Witcher 3 and Tyranny.

Losing BioWare is a pretty huge blow.

It never looks that good just before launch because there's so many people trying to find faults in everything. EA/BioWare has shown a LOT of game footage giving lots of fodder. Games like No Man's Sky took the path of smaller amounts of footage and gave everyone less of a chance to pick it apart until after the game was out.

All that said, I don't care what the reviews say, I'm going to buy it and play it because I want to. If it sucks, then maybe I'll have hesitation on the next one, but chances are I'll enjoy it enough to not feel like I'm wasting my money.

pshh. It has to be utter trash for me to even have hesitation on Bioware games at this point. The last time I hesitated was because I didn't like how they took away the RPG from ME1 when they made ME2. So I waited until it dropped to $20 and it's become my favorite Bioware game ever.

By trash I mean like Force Unleashed 2, or No Mans Sky level of trash.

well modern bioware is famous for pandering to tumblr so no surprise that all their female characters look ugly

Almost all the characters i've seen in mass effect andromeda look like somebody i would see at a protest for safe spaces on a college campus.
