Anyone I approve of is Alpha. Anyone I don't like is Beta.

Super cool guy who bangs bad bitches = Alpha

Accountant getting married = Beta

So there's pretty much OmLiLi and his Beta Bitches, and since you aren't OmLiLi, you do the math.

Alpha = Heisenberg

Beta = Walter White

Alpha = Ren

Beta = Stimpy

Alpha = Loki

Beta = Thor

The closest "alpha" guy I can recall was a lead singer in the most popular band in my college town. Always had a super hot girlfriend he was cheating on, he never showered but girls still though he was "hot," very talented but not at all driven, got arrested a few times, know he hit at least one of his gf's, ditched her when said he would go with her to an abortion (not kidding). He lived in the basement of an old morgue for a while which was sound proof and the parties were awesome (also not kidding). He and I were friends but I never understood girls who slept with him... and many, many of my friends did. It was very clear to me that he treated women terribly once their relationship became sexual- he was always sweet to me and treated me like a baby sister.

He's in his mid-late 30's now. Married, fat and a bartender. Alphas age poorly...

Holy shit that sounds amazing.

But did he look like a staypuft hairless gay underwear model? If not I don't believe your story, liar

[–]MissMaudewits or gtfo [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I love lying. Lying's my favorite. Here's a fun lie: He wasn't even 6' but one time he was literally having sex with my friend when his dancer girlfriend showed up pounding on the door. He jumped up and invited the gf in to drink beers. They all hung out for the reminder of the night and my friend called me crying because he went home with the other girl that night.

[–]ManSentHisOwnWayAttracted to blue haired land whales [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

So what made this guy an alpha? That he was a lead singer, that he threw great parties or just his success with women? I mean, he doesn't sound all that great to me.

[–]MissMaudewits or gtfo [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

Alpha =! Great.

This isn't aimed at your example specifically but I just have a real hard time figuring out what alpha is supposed to mean.

[–]Sunhappy_DCThe OG of Sparkling Water[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

so if a neckbeard sperg wouldn't call himself an alpha, then he is, in fact, an alpha?

[–]shoup88Not TBP [スコア非表示]  (19子コメント)

I don't really buy the whole alpha/beta dichotomy. I think alpha/beta are a spectrum of traits and no person is all one or the other. It's situational.

However if I were to call someone an alpha, they'd probably be like some macho man fratty douchebag who beats people up for fun. Like the Alpha Betas in Revenge of the Nerds. Basically I think the term is kind of silly.

It is curious how many women only understand alphas as being stupid alphas.

[–]Atlas_B_ShrugginScarlett O'Horror [スコア非表示]  (5子コメント)

Because you think high betas are alphas.

[–]SetConsumesR [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

Right, an alpha who can control himself is immediately not one.

[–]Atlas_B_ShrugginScarlett O'Horror [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

Control is a good beta trait.

[–]SetConsumesR [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

Control is a human trait. Betas merely tend to have the control without much risk taking.

[–]Atlas_B_ShrugginScarlett O'Horror [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

you may continue to believe betas are alphas all you want, you wont convince ME

Ah, good counter to the point and not trying to distract with irrelevant comments

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq. [スコア非表示]  (11子コメント)

Intelligence doesn't have anything to do with being alpha or beta, you can be a smart alpha or a dumb one. Or a smart beta or a dumb one. The reason you see many people using the "stupid alpha caricature" is because it's an easy one to make: alphas have "bad" alpha traits as well as "good" ones -- that includes things like impulsivity and aggression/violence. These things are more likely to be seen as stupid or immature.

[–]SetConsumesR [スコア非表示]  (10子コメント)

Do women in general see being impulsive, aggressive, violent, as immature?

Or is it more like, immature acts of aggression, violence, and impulsiveness stand out more?

So then fine,

Let me rephrase then,

It is curious how many women only understand alphas as being immature alphas.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq. [スコア非表示]  (9子コメント)

Do women in general see being impulsive, aggressive, violent, as immature?

Idk, do you not see why those traits could be seen as more stupid/more immature?

Maybe from a female point of view.

I see aggression and violence as vital to being a man, it's driven heavily by testosterone after all. A non aggressive and non violent man feels much like a docile child. Difficult to be competitive and give a shit without aggression and violence.

Impulsiveness is what's typically seen as immature by both men and women, and learning to not be impulsive is a sign of maturity.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq. [スコア非表示]  (7子コメント)

it's driven heavily by testosterone after all.

This is irrelevant to the question of whether it's more stupid/immature from an objective, logical perspective.

Difficult to be competitive and give a shit without aggression and violence.

Well, aggression in this context means "too aggressive" or "inappropriately aggressive" not "appropriately aggressive when it calls for it." And I completely disagree that you have to be violent to be competitive, lol.

A non aggressive and non violent man feels much like a docile child.

You're going from one extreme to the other. You don't have to be overly aggressive or violent to not be a "docile child."

[–]SetConsumesR [スコア非表示]  (6子コメント)

I didn't qualify how aggressive or violent the way you are.

Overly aggressive, overly violent, is seen as immature.

That wasn't what I asked about. I'm not looking at extremes.

You implied any amount of aggression or violence or impulsiveness is more stupid or immature than not.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq. [スコア非表示]  (5子コメント)

You implied any amount of aggression or violence or impulsiveness is more stupid or immature than not.

Obviously I'm not talking about like reasonable instances, for instance self-defense. That would still be "alpha" but alphas are more likely to just in general to portray these traits. I wouldn't call a man who uses violence and aggression only when it's reasonably called for/necessary either "violent" or "aggressive".

[–]SetConsumesR [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

By your definitions then if a man is called violent or aggressive it must be unreasonable?

A man being normally or reasonably violent or aggressive is just being a man?

And then what is the man that's not violent or aggressive enough when he should be seen as? A child?

[–]buarthaMale gynosocialist [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Aggressive, dominant or strives to be, in control/ controlling (depending on circumstances,) doesn't respond well to hierarchies where he's at the bottom, very strong in-group bias, generally pursue their own needs/ wants before those of others. Some good leadership traits when in a position to lead but can struggle to get there in modern situations because they lash out when under the authority of those they feel are less powerful than them.

An alpha male is someone who uses his innate qualities to attract a woman. A beta male is someone who uses his resources to attract a woman. Certain qualities tend to attract more women than others, but I don't think there are any universal alpha qualities that will attract all women. Different women like different things in men.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq. [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Alphas have good alpha traits (confidence, masculinity, leadership ability, passion, etc.) and bad alpha traits (domineering, controlling, jealous, possessive, impulsive, etc.). They have very few good/bad beta traits and that's why here we get a lot of caricatures/stereotypes of "alphas" because there are few men IRL with this heavily skewed balance of traits.

"Alpha" has nothing to do with intelligence or logical versus emotional.

There are 2 kinds of alphas.

Guys who are actually successful both socially and in terms of their jobs

Bum ass fuccbois who look hot temporarily until meth destroys their teeth

Bum ass fuccbois think the first group is "higher beta".

A confident guy who isn't afraid to be who he wants to be I guess. Looking at my own social circle I think there's one guy who kinda stands out as being extremely admirable in that regard. He's got naturally handsome features and takes pride in how he looks, working out and making sure he always looks on point. He's incredibly trustworthy and loyal, someone who quite naturally leads and inspires others. He's honest and deeply emphatic. He also does extremely well with women, more than anyone I know. He's probably the only person I wouldn't feel stupid looking up to outside of my own father. We still treat one another as equals tho and I'd never defer to him. In fact, I think he kinda looks up to me in some ways as well.

He's also got qualities RPers normally don't call alpha. I mean, he used to be an elementary school friend and we connected again years later because we both struggled with depression. He's the kind of guy you can talk openly and honestly with about those kinda problems.

So yeah, that's as close to an alpha I've ever met. My dad fits the above description as well but I think every son sees his dad as being a special kind of man.

Take out the "does well with women" part and twerps will call him a pussy beta. /s

I think anyone who has overcome any REAL struggle will be a subtle alpha like this. Real alphas have broken enough noses so by the time they even have a wife to protect, all that fighting is pointless to them.

Real drug users will tell you ALL drugs are way too hyped by movies and TV and pop culture, and they are actually really subtle and boring. The subtleness is why they are so addicting.

So basically, a real alpha wouldnt call himself that, or feel the need to prove it.

Alpha is the epitome of selfishness.

Beta is the epitome of selflessness.

I was watching The People v. OJ Simpson (and subsequently read a lot about OJ and his trial) and it occurred to me that OJ Simpson is kind of a quintessential alpha.

Obviously he's tall, athletic, wealthy and handsome. He's also well-spoken, charming, manipulative and intelligent. And he's prone to violent outbursts, criminal behavior, reckless decisions and extreme jealousy. He seems like the kind of guy who thinks the rules don't apply to him, the world revolves around him and sees himself as the king of every room he enters.

Actually while watching the miniseries I found myself very distracted by Cuba Gooding Jr. because even though he acted the part well, I just thought the casting was terrible. I couldn't put my finger on why, then it occurred to me: "He's too beta." (This is how I know this sub is ruining my brain.)

Obviously I'm talking about 90s OJ. Present-day OJ is old, fat and in prison.
