And when people say you don't need guns, this is why you need guns.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
Good on him.

Specifically, this is why you need a shotgun. I love my Glock 19, it's still in the safe next to my bedside, but if I hear a home invader I'm getting the Glock out to give to my wife so she can cover the door while I go in the closet and get my shotgun - because instead of just a gunshot wound in the butt, the fucker would never be able to sit down properly again, assuming he didn't bleed out of the giant gaping hole the 00 buckshot put in him (spread at the distance would be minimal, meaning a lot of overlap).

Serious question here.
How do people keep a shotgun for home defense while keeping it secured from kids? My house is unsecure as shit. I live in a good area but anyone who wants to get it could get in via any number of shitty windows, so I think about keeping a shotgun handy but I also have a kid. So if I had a gun I'd have to keep it locked up tight as hell because my understanding is that my kid is way more likely to kill himself on accident than the likelihood that I'd need to defend my family from a home invasion. But that's not terribly comforting when I think about a home invader.
Is there a practical middle ground between keeping a gun secured so that my kid can't off himself but being able to access it within a few moments of waking up from a dead sleep when a window shatters?

Serious answer:
Teach your kids how to use the gun. Don't put it up on a shelf like some mysterious totem and tell them not to touch it. Take them out and show them how to use it properly and safely. Teach them the rules of safety, and make sure they practice them every time they touch the gun. Teach them that guns are tools, and like any other tool, require skill, practice and awareness to use properly. I am certainly not suggesting you allow your kids free access to your guns, but if you dispel the mystique of a forbidden object and teach them to respect the gun and understand it's use, you will go a long way to reducing the chances of an accidental injury, not mention passing on valuable knowledge while spending some quality time with your kids.

Can confirm. That's what my pops did with me when I was like six.
