Future Captain Discussion (self.reddevils)

Hi all,

I have noticed time and time again that Ander Herrera is tipped by many of you lot on here to be the next United captain.

He shows passion week in week out, is a true Red and gives 110%, no doubt about that, but do any of these things show the leadership qualities required of the captain of Manchester United? I don't think so.

We're talking about an armband worn by Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand to name a few from recent memory. What all of these players had in common was a high leadership attribute.

I am yet to see Ander show this. To be fair, he hasn't really been given the opportunity to, but I think there are players in our squad right now that have it and have shown it. Smalling, Valencia, Pogba potentially and obviously Ibra.

I think Ander has a lot of work to do if he's going to be in the captain discussion when it comes time to make a change, and I think there are much more suitable options in the squad right now.

tl;dr - Herrera has the passion, the love for the club and the ability, but I think he lacks the leadership qualities to be a proper United captain.

I honestly don't care until Rooney leaves if he does leave. Rooney is our captain for now and that's that.

I mean look at Messi, he is quiet. In no way is he captain material yet he gets the Argentinian arm band and is vice-captain for Barcelona.

While I still respect the fact that Rooney is our captain, he isn't getting much match time at the moment. I feel like part of the problem with the squad is that they don't have that consistent strong leader in the captain role every match (or at least most matches, especially big ones). With Rooney hardly ever playing, how much can "the captain" really influence and inspire the team when they need it? The performances this season have been lacking, to say the least, I just think the current captaincy situation might be part of it.

Messi is a bit different though. I don't think he's the perfect captain but he's Messi. A lot of players respect him and look up to him because he's Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest football player in history. And he's been at Barca longer than anyone else bar Iniesta and Busquets. So he deserved to be their vice captain.

Don't want Smalling and I don't think Herrera is good enough to be our next captain.

Yeah I agree with most of those people. Pogba and Valencia show that fighting spirit. Herrera is also a good shout

Mata, De Gea, Herrera, Zlatan (for a year or two)

There's plenty to choose from once Rooney's gone

Not sure Jose would want our captain to be the GK, Mata and Herrera arent first team material and zlatan probably wont be here next year

Ander is a solid player who plays his heart out and no doubt brings passion to the squad. But I don't think he's going to be more than a squad player next season. If Rooney goes, someone will step up naturally and right now I'd vote for Tony V but hope Pogba becomes that kind of leader in the long-term.
