[VERY unpopular opinion] Herrera's replacement (self.reddevils)

I am not doing a knee-jerk reaction based on this game, but I think Kante has shown us what type of player we need next to Pogba, and I don't think that is Herrera.

Herrera has incredible passion and tries his best, and does really well against weaker teams. However, I don't think we will win titles with Herrera as one of our core players like Pogba to influence big games.

Pogba is really bad at defending, and we just don't have that balance in midfield with just Herrera. That's why often Carrick or Fellaini brings in that balance. But, I think we need a replacement who can play with Pogba and eliminate the need of Carrick + Herrera starting together.

Again, this is not a knee-jerk reaction as Herrera and Jones were playing decent in first 30 mins. But, I do think we need someone who can replace the need of both Herrera + Jones etc. What do you guys think, would Herrera be one of your core players for the future to keep?

We did go all out for Sanches from what the news articles suggested. He didn't join because it wasn't certain at the time who was gonna be the manager. And I don't know who'd have solved our midfield issue. In hindsight, Vidal would have been good, but the dodgy knee was always going to be a big issue at the time.

That's poor all-around from us and that's what i'm talking about on a post lower down: Chelsea seems to get their shit done most windows. I mean... who do they go after and then NOT get? How many "Chelsea could've signed's" are there? Not nearly enough compared to us and Arsenal for example.

Now that you mention it, Renato Sanches would have been very ideal next to Pogba :/ He has similar work rate to Kante but also composure with the ball.

As a Bayern fan, I'll say Sanches would not solve United's issues. He's extremely error prone at this point, and can't perform under pressure. Maybe in a few years if he applies himself...

But Arturo would have been exactly what you want. He's great in big games and he bosses midfield. Can't have him though...

Its not a unpopular opinion really. Hererra has to stay in the squad because frankly we've fuckall midfield depth and he's VERY capable of being a squad player not to mention you need players with his passion and drive but I've thought for a while now we will eventually (probably next season) need a higher calibre replacement, that'll help Pogba out too.

I'd like nainggolan who I think is more achievable than the typical kroos/ verratti shouts.

Technically proficient, insane workrate and a fantastic shot on him. Passion and drive is a given as well.

EDIT: Herrera absolutely has a big future at United if people think I'm writing him off.

Problem is Kantes don't hang on trees. I struggle to think of even one player similar to him, so might be a difficult task to bring in "a player of his type".

I think the problem is that very few players really want to play as a defensive midfielder. A midfielder wants to do it all. It take a manager to recognize a player with the qualities to play the position and coach them into the role.

I don't doubt Kante will inspire players, young or older to start thinking about his position and whether they can adopt it into their game. Blind for example should be watching Kante very closely if he ever wants a cdm role again.

I agree we should look for a world class defensive mid, but Herrera is better than both Fellani and Carrick at defending. Fellani and Carrick are two of the slowest players in the league.

Well, we could have Kroos or Verratti if we're willing to break the bank again this summer. Either together with Pogba would be the most dominant midfield in the league.

Kroos? Not in a million years imo

Real Madrid are not in a selling position so why should they sell one of the best midfielders in the world? Furthermore he seems pretty settled in the squad and city itself, so there's no motivation to 'downgrade' to United, as much as it hurts to say that.

Veratti is pretty unlikely too, and I don't want to see us breaking the bank in such a short period again.

Seeing us linked to Bakayoko pretty often recently, think he deserves at least a little bit attention.

Don't care about breaking the bank. We'll be offloading players such as Rooney, possibly Ibra too this summer so strengthening the MF with Verrati is a top priority if that is the case. We need to get our fucking shit together BEFORE the summer...

Asking myself: Why do Chelsea always grab up players we want/need? Pisses me off.

Do you just like naming star players? Why does either Kroos or Verratti belong in the same conversation about a Kante type player? Kroos is awful defensively and it showed in most of RM's early games. They completely changed once Casemiro sealed his spot in midfield allowing Modric and him to push further forward.
