But the thing is the ref had called over smalling to tell the team to stop doing that to hazard. They had been running into the back of him all day.

It wasn't the refs fault.

There is context to the yellow card.

So by your logic Herrera deserved to be booked again because of only his 2nd tackle on Hazard, and not Jones for "running into the back of him" about 3/4 times? I don't understand how a professional referee can officiate an FA Cup match between two of the biggest clubs in England on that logic. Bookings aren't handed out to the team, they're handed out to players, and the ref talking to Smalling should have no bearing on his decision when Herrera makes that tackle.

Hazard set himself up precisely to draw that foul. He knew what the meeting between Oliver, Jones, and Smalling was about. Once play resumed, he looked to draw another foul and got even luckier when Herrera was the one to make the decision for the late tackle.

Offensive players look to draw defensive players into mistakes. Either into a bad step allowing the dribbler to get around them or into a bad foul giving them a set piece/forcing a sending off. Defenders need to know this is part of an offensive strategy and not commit mistakes.

Really disappointed in Herrera... he's always been a bit of a hot head, but in a game where we are very undermanned offensively, I expected him to be more composed without the ball. Really soft second yellow but shouldn't have made the tackle in the first place.

That doesn't mean you just don't make fouls anymore... when you play defensive cm in a game like this you foul people like this as a habit to slow the game. There was no reason on earth he would expect a yellow from something so minor. The only correct decision was foul, perhaps issue a final warning. The problem is the first yellow was also not deserved. Herrera should be able to do 4 of these fouls before getting send off.

He's like a modern Keane (from what I've gathered, was too young to really watch back then). Passion and intensity sometimes to a fault. This was a stupid decision but hopefully the team rallies around and wins it.
