Had read his book on Jesus. Thought he was a sane guy. But as it turns out his sanity is farce and biased. His approach to when Islam is criticized and when he chose to critically examine other faith is way too dishonest intellectually .
Now i don't have a problem with anyone trying to film Aghoris. I have a problem with the methodology of filming. Aghoris are a secretive cult and no one knows what they really practice when they are left alone. Benaras is home to many sadhus and sants who cater to westernized audience for money. As such how do we even know that these Aghoris whom Reza met are speaking for other Aghoris let alone for other Hindus. Why can't we just presume that these Aghoris are simply catering to Reza's prejudices of what Aghoris are, for money?
[–]perplexedm 4 points5 points6 points  (4 children)
Well, they aghoris accepted Reza and cnn camera crew first. When aghoris found Reza's team was not worth catering to, they catered what Reza deserved ?

Did you comprehend what i wrote? Because your comment suggest that you didn't.

Have you read his book on Islam? Give an example of intellectual dishonesty when you're accusing someone of it.
He is not the smartest person in the world but can't say that he is dishonest.

From the CNN site it does seem like the view was very unjudgemental. I don't think the takeaway is interned to be "look at these barbaric Hindus and their beliefs". It's supposed to show how a large religion like Hinduism encompasses views as diverse as the Aghoris.

What diversity? Did they show any other version of Hinduism?

As I have read and watched Reza Aslan's books and debates, one thing is for sure he is one of the most dishonest people of em all. He very confidently lies about his credentials, and is an overall apologist.
He once was debating Sam Harris on Islam, and the best argument he put forward was "I'm right, cause I have a PhD". His new show is supposed to capture religions across the world, and the first thing he does after coming to India is meet up with a group of cannibals. He is just fishing for some shocking content to boost his shows popularity, that's all. People like him should not be paid any attention to, he is not worth the time, no apologist ever is.

The show is called belief and its about different weird belief systems all around the world.
Aghoris are real. What is wrong if he is bringing them out to the world?
[–]elder--wand 0 points1 point2 points  (3 children)
Did I say there is "anything wrong". The guy is a fucking apologist, he will defend Islam tooth and nail, and when it comes to other religion his first place of visit is the fringest of fringe cannibal group. Only reconfirms the fact that he is dishonest and looking for shock value content. Honest research into religion is not something Mr Aslan does, and that's how he makes a living.
[–]zistu 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
Aghoris belief systems does not need to be researched? Or shown?
I still don't understand what youre upset about?
Is it that he didn't do the same for weird Islamic cults or sects? He has said that he will.
Or that he is doing it to show India in poor light? Or Hinduism?
Why is Aghoris part of Hinduism anyway. They are an independent cult system. Just because it is in India, does not make it Hindu.
Also, let us watch the show and then decide.
Let me know your exact objection.
[–]elder--wand 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I still don't understand what youre upset about?
The dishonest coverage. You pick a fringe group and show them as if they are mainstream. It's like showing ISIS as the whole of Islam, something which Mr Aslan very passionately defends himself, but himself is grossly dishonest about other religions.
I have no objection, I actually expect something very similar that dishonest sack of shit has produced. It fits his dishonest narrative. He is looking for shock value to piss some people, shock some people, enyertain some people. Real inquiry into understanding other faiths is not Mr Aslans foremost motive.

And when the guru began to eat his own waste and hurl it at Aslan and his camera crew, the CNN host scurried away.
TIL Aghoris. They're disgusting.

Some viewed the episode as an attack on Hindus.

  • Religion scholar Reza Aslan ate cooked human brain tissue with a group of cannibals in India during Sundayspremiere of the new CNN show Believer, a documentary series about spiritualityaround the globe.
  • With multiple reports of hate-fueled attacks against people of Indian origin from across the U.S., the show characterizes Hinduism as cannibalistic, which is a bizarre way of looking at the third largest religion in the world, lobbyist group U.S. India Political Action Committeessaid in a statement, according to the Times of India.
  • In the Aghori view, nothing cantaint the human body, Aslan said.
  • At one point, the interview soured and one cannibal threatened Aslan: I will cut off your head if you keep talking so much. Aslan, in turn, said to his director, I feel like this may havebeen a mistake.
