I had said two months back that BJP is going to sweep UP. And for anyone staying in the state and with a half decent political brain, this was evident leading up to the election.
Yet journalist after journalist peddled a wrong narrative. Some, like Barkha Dutt, the ET journalists etc were openly cheerleading for the SP-Congress alliance and outright lying. One of them predicted a loss for the BJP in Meerut Cantonment - a seat BJP has not lost in the last 12 years. And others, like Smita Prakash of ANI were speaking out of plain ignorance. Look at her article. She travels to Meerut and speaks to a few Muslims. They tell her they are voting for the SP and she reaches a conclusion that 'Meerut Maangey Akhilesh'. This, ignoring the historical strong performance of the BJP (even at the peak of SP wave in 2012, the BJP won 4 out of the 7 seats in Meerut).

There are some established scripts and playbooks in politics. Kejriwal's move from activism to electoral politics followed a very old playbook that even Vajpayee and Laloo had followed decades ago. It would have behoved Sharmila to follow some script or another.

Hypothetically speaking she should have mustered a larger group of vocal local supporters before ending the fast and stepping into electoral politics. She should have spoken to sources of funding, for local businesses to sponsor campaigning collateral, have organised multiple public speaking and debating appearances in local and national media and so on.
I can't enumerate the entire campaign playbook here. The most recent example is of Kejriwal, just look at how he did it.

No losing party will give immediate justifications for losses. No leader will admit to a mistake right away, especially parties like BSP and AAP which are cults of personality. They may take corrective action later, but on the face of it they will blame externalities. Earlier in the morning, Yogendra Yadav was calling BSP politics a "politics of social justice". The Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue is an electoral cow that the BJP will milk as much as possible. As long as there is all talk but no Mandir built, it helps in the pre election voter polarisation. It'd be stupid of them to build the mandir and change the status quo which is heavily in their favour.

Obviously, the no of people who care was really high enough at one point (BJP started making electoral gains only once Ayodhya issue started) and it no doubt would have been significantly decreasing now as softer alternatives to polarization take its place (such as the Sanskritization and Yogaization and Antinationalism), but its still relevant considering that BJP took the pain to put it in their 2014 manifesto but I wouldn't be surprised if it disappeared from their election manifesto in 2019.

A huge percent of people do care. Come out of the comfy urban English educated circle and you'll see that more than 3/4th of this country is Hindu many of who do care about a temple for their God. OK.. I have a small family business and my employees are from the deepest hinterlands of UP. All they are concerned about is 3 square meals a day. My work takes me to villages, again in UP, and people are more concerned about getting few hours of electricity than a getting a temple 500 kms away. Hell, even subsidy politics will sway more votes than a temple.
By no means I am saying that the masses won't like it if a temple is built, but that is not their core expectations or demand or desire. Politicians love this issue because they can polarise based on it, stop the politicians from mentioning it and then see how many people demand for it on their own.

I mentioned in another post, most Sikhs see the 84 riots as Hindu-Sikh riots, as they were in many places across India. Sikhs have put the animosity behind them, that was a bad time, bad things happened. You either deliver on prosecuting those responsible or, frankly, shut up instead of opening old wounds.

This is unreal. The BJP is leading even in constituencies with high proportions of Muslims and other minorities, like Deoband. The conventional wisdom peddled by the mainstream media has flown out of the window. Forget a wave, this is nothing short of a tsunami.
Edit: BJP is even leading in 6 out of the 10 Vidhan Sabha constituencies that make up the Congress strongholds of Amethi and Rae Bareilli. Absolutely incredible result.
