You should write things like that in your diary

Not because they're bad players, they're just not the mean bastards that you come to expect from a Mourinho side. Look at:

Terry Cahill Jorge Costa Carvalho Pepe Ramos Lucio Samuel etc.

They're all soldiers. Reliable. Solid (except for Pepe maybe, ha) and that's just CB's under Mourinho. Jones/Rojo/Darmian/Smalling. Not so much.

What about Azpilicueta, Marcelo, Coentrao, Arbeloa etc? Such a bizarre and incredibly inaccurate stereotype that you have to be 'hard' to play a Mourinho defence.

Yeah all good defenders too. I just didn't want to list all of them. That wasn't necessarily the point. And it's not about being hard. It's about having the right mentality. I'd argue the United defenders I've listed are 'soft'. I believe Mourinho has intimated as much himself, this season.

Carvalho is not someone I would describe as a hard bastard.

He was a great defender and footballer but also a world class wind up merchant

I don't think I described him as hard either. Solid and reliable however...

His potential is attack-based, that's why he's held in such high regard. He has pace and a good delivery, well I say he has them, they've been a bit lacking for the most part. However when he first came to United he wasn't fully fit in his first season he looked sluggish, then at the start of his second season as you mentioned that was when he was at his best. Bombing up and down the pitch, good link up with Memphis, I remember being at the game against Brugge at OT and he ran from their half back towards his own goal, won the ball, then ended up running down the right flank attacking. That's the kind of Luke Shaw we want to see.

Then, PSV happened, he suffers a absolutely horrific injury and we're still seeing some of the after effects of that night. He was never going to come back into a team and just click back into the way he was playing them two months at the start of last season. When you also consider the change in manager, which results in a completely different way of things from training, playing, formations and from a mental point of view as Jose will have his own way of handling players compared to Van Gaal.

He's been a victim of the tough love Jose wants to implement into the squad, and whilst I think we'd be absolutely crazy to sell Luke, if he doesn't fit into Jose's way of doing things then he can potentially end up being sold. But that's a different story. The be all and end all is he's going to need time to adjust to what Jose wants. I thought he was unfortunate when Jose called him out after the Watford game for the "mistake" that we were going through a bit of a rough patch and Joses was having a "mini-meltdown" that the incidences coincided with each other. Then he was dropped, the team started to perform well and Jose was right not to change the team. He's also had niggles which again after his injury are understandable.

He also has a lot to learn defensively as well, something which I'm sure he'll become accustomed too under Jose, but these things can't happen overnight.

Once he get himself fully fit, understands what Jose wants from him, gets himself back into the team and starts performing like we know that he can then all this talk of him not fulfilling his potential will be forgotten.

TL;DR Is he what he need? He can be if he applies himself.
