+Terra Sober 1. There are relatively less male main protagonists than females. As I said, overall, they have more female protagonists. 2. You seem to have not watched any Disney Princess movies except for the first three....Aside from the first three, they all stand for themselves. They're helped by men, but never saved by them. And do characters really need back stories to be good? Beauty and the Beast got nominated for Best Picture, so Frozen and Lion King aren't exceptions. Or have you also forgotten the other 43 Disney movies that don't center around Princesses? Also, Ghibli designs aren't that good either. They all look the exact same. Disney characters look more like anime characters with their huge eyes more than Barbie's, but OK.

Ugh, so true. FROZEN isn't even one-tenth the film that THE WIND RISES is (and I liked FROZEN, but THE WIND RISES is a masterpiece). Here's hoping that the category doesn't continue to be a popularity contest. /sigh

In short term, sure FROZEN is a worthy winner. But I can't help even just less than 12 months later that THE WIND RISES would've also been a worthy winner.

+Jack Zimmerman Actually, The Wind Rises should ave won both the Oscars for Best Animated Film and Best Foreign Language Film. Or at least nominated in the latter.

The Wind Rises was a true work of art.  It was one of the few pieces of animation I've seen that could draw raw, intimate, and deeply human emotions from it's imagery.  Granted, the aeronautic techno-babble flew over me, but the creative passion the plot detailed, and the surprisingly touching love story (who's tragic progression - spoiler alert - actually heightened its impact), combined with these images and the awesome score, make it a masterpieces in every sense.  Fuckin' should've won.

    Jecka1021
That's because no one went to go see it (The Wind Rises I mean). The people who were supposed to vote either said "I'm not going to vote because I didn't see all of the movies" or "Frozen was the best; didn't even care about the rest of them." Most of them didn't even give it a chance. :(

The reason it didn't win is cause a bunch of Assholes who did the voting didn't watch the movie. They all basically gave the " This is for kids so i pick frozen cause disney hehe ".  That's it. That's why FROZEN won. Not cause it was good, cause a bunch of adults didn't want to watch animated movies in fear of being called childish.

Frozen was extremely popular worldwide, even in Japan. It's a cultural phenomenon, of course it'll win not to mention that Wind Rises is quite controversial due to the WW2 angle anyway
    2 3

+Bebangski Yu  Popularity =/= QUALITY!   Twilight would've won shit ton of Oscars, Best Actor/Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography....'cause it's extremely popular worldwide!!
    11 12
    BlueFox94
+Bebangski Yu I personally think the WW2 angle was always overhyped from the start. The point of the film is that this guy's vision for aviation transcended his country's intent to use them for harm.

    Tim Tran
Wind Rises wasnt Miyazakis best. and also, not being popular doesnt mean it should win Oscars also.... and guess what, Star Wars and Gone With the Wind are some of the highest grossing films of all time, so they dont deserve oscars right? -___- the fact is that Frozen is beloved by billions of people, fans and critics alike. sure, i didnt like how they didnt watch any of the film, but that does NOT mean Frozen is bad. Also, just becoz you like a film doesnt mean it deserves to win awards. if the majority of the people love the film, then it should win the Oscar since the Oscar isnt based on a minority's critical opinion.

+Tim Tran Frozen had no meaning wat so freaking ever...Wind Rises was based on a man's life an event that has helped shaped our history books...and they gave it to Frozen what because it's little princesses singing in a fairy tale...pffffff....
    4 5
    Tim Tran
+Dulala if u think Frozen had no meaning, u clearly shouldn't be reviewing or criticizing any films. At all. Even the critics who dislike the films praise its messages because they ACTUALLY know what they're talking about. U don't give Oscars to movies that send out messages. U give Oscars to movies that are good in terms of storytelling, character, and overall qualities of the film. All the stupid people who criticizes Frozen for its morals shouldn't even be discussing films, coz that's a waste of breath to actual critics who actually KNOW how to discuss characters, storytelling, and everything else.

+Dulala opinions. YOUR opinion. MINORITIES opinions. Just becoz YOU like someone better does not mean everyone in the Oscars have to. I enjoyed Frozen. I love Miyazaki. But I was underwhelmed by Wind Rises. Lots of people also have my opinions. BTW, Pocahontas was critically panned in terms of storytelling and characters. Just becoz it has good messages doesn't mean its a good movie. You don't just look at the message. You look at the stories and the characters.

+Dulala I know about Studio Ghibli you know, and i know this sounds blasphemous, but I RESPECT then rather than LOVE them. their movies are beautiful, but do not appeal to me, I cannot invest myself in the stories or relate myself to them, perhaps because Ghibli films are best experienced if you have a lot of knowledge of Japanese culture or you are japanese yourself. so yes, I find Frozen much more appealing ad relatable than many Ghibli films, even 'Wind Rises'and yes, because of that, Frozen deserved its win in the oscars the same way you think that Wind Rises deserve it because it probably appealed more to you. and apparently many more people feel Frozen appealed to them rather than a Ghibli film and your remarks come off as incredibly biased and hipsterish when it comes to the oscars, so no Frozen is not patata, Lego movie is patatata to the max, Wind Rises is respected and that's it.

Disney's so repetitive, Princess Movie's over and over and over only sometimes do they stray away like Big Hero 6 which was incredible and had such a varied cast 10 time's better than Frozen.

+rei you are stupid. 1. There r 54 Disney Animated films. 2. There are 11 Disney Princess movies. You do the math genius. Next time, do research before you criticize something. How about this? 1. All Ghibli films have female characters as main characters. So basically there are more 'Ghibli princesses' than Disneys. 2. All Ghibli films have romance. Meanwhile, Disney have lots of films that have zero romance. 3. All Ghibli films have the same style and animation. Meanwhile, Disney has varied animation and varied character designs and styles.
    1 2
    Tim Tran
+Kimberley Chow saying every girl as princesses is definitely not right, you are right. But Pocahontas and Mulan are Disney Princesses. They aren't born of royalty. Besides, that franchise only includes those who make money, so it shouldn't be used as a complaint on films. There are as much strong girl models in Disney as in Ghibli, is what I'm trying to say.

+ardalan That covers a lot of films!  Have you seen them all?! I haven't. Here's how Time Out ranked every Disney animated feature that had been released by June 2014: 1. Pinocchio (1940) 2. Dumbo (1941) 3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) 4. Fantasia (1940) 5. 101 Dalmatians (1961) 6. Bambi (1942) 7. The Jungle Book (1967) 8. Beauty and the Beast (1991) 9. Cinderella (1950) 10. The Little Mermaid (1989) 11. Tangled (2010) 12. Wreck-It Ralph (2012) 13. Lady and the Tramp (1955) 14. Sleeping Beauty (1959) 15. Frozen (2013) 16. Aladdin (1992) 17. The Lion King (1994) 18. Robin Hood (1973) 19. Alice in Wonderland (1951) 20. Peter Pan (1953) 21. Hercules (1997) 22. The Princess and the Frog (2009) 23. The Aristocats (1970) 24. Tarzan (1999) 25. The Rescuers (1977) 26. Winnie the Pooh (2011) 27. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) 28. Lilo & Stitch (2002) 29. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977) 30. The Fox and the Hound (1981) 31. The Great Mouse Detective (1986) 32. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad (1949) 33. Bolt (2008) 34. The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) 35. Fun & Fancy Free (1947) 36. Oliver & Company (1988) 37. Make Mine Music (1946) 38. Meet the Robinsons (2007) 39. Dinosaur (2000) 40. The Rescuers Down Under (1990) 41. Three Caballeros (1944) 42. Mulan (1998) 43. Saludos Amigos (1942) 44. Treasure Planet (2002) 45. The Sword in the Stone (1963) 46. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) 47. Fantasia 2000 (1999) 48. Chicken Little (2005) 49. Black Cauldron (1985) 50. Melody Time (1948) 51. Pocahontas (1995) 52. Home on the Range (2004) 53. Brother Bear (2003) It could be argued that "The Lion King" deserves to be higher, but I'd have to say that this is a pretty good ranking overall and obviously gives a great overview of the Disney output. (Of course, there's also all the shorts and live-action films as well.) If you've seen ALL of these and still feel that "Frozen" is the worst of the lot, then I can respect your opinion just a little bit more.

+Tim Tran 1. Not all Ghibli movies have female characters as main characters. However, it is a dominant trend. Exception - Porco Rosso. 2. Not all Ghibli movies have romance. Or maybe all? It depends how strictly or loosely you define romance. For example My neighbors Yamadas is comedy about family. But if you look closely maybe you could find some shades of romance? 3. Not all Ghibli movies have the same style and animation. For example My neighbors Yamadas or Tale of Princess Kaguya have very unique style. And Disney not always has varied designs and styles. But I agree that it is more diverse overall.

Its sad Frozen won instead of wind rises. Its sad majority of americans are brainwashed by the fast paced noisy action and humor based films and not able to enjoy the quiet observation, serenity of a moment, slow paced story telling of miyazaki film. Most western culture ppl around me say miyazaki film is slow and boring, which is so sad.

he was not being compared.. did you even listen to the speech?  Compare - to examine (two or more objects, ideas, people, etc.) in order to note similarities and differences: to compare two pieces of cloth; to compare the governments of two nations. He was not compared to Walt Disney,  he was mentioned as one of the figures that made a gigantic contribution in the history of animation.
    54 55
    The Dude
+Karosuu calm down... I know what the verb to compare means there's no need to be a patronising bellend... by saying they've both made massive contributions to the animation industry implies a similarity, and since Hayao Miyazaki was nicknamed the 'walt disney of japan' by americans, this may have annoyed him that's all...
    19 20
    Dulala
+Tom Chambers I agree with you Tom...Miyazaki is jus one man who imaged his story, writes it, designs and bring it to life and then he directs it...to call him the Walt Disney of Japan is an insult, I personally would have rather compared him to Dream Works rather than Walt Disney....have they not seen this man's work...it's serious and sends deep messages...I don't think that is something that Disney can do with just a few singing princesses...Miyazaki is a master and like all great masters there is none in comparison until someone else rises...

    NWR1991
+Dulala So you compare a man who creates such great stories and animation to a company that makes movies that had dated pop culture references and some mediocre stories in their movies. I like Dreamworks but in my opinion they haven't made any good film since Madagascar 3. Plus Disney has distribute most of Miyazaki's work as well as redubbing and translation of his work as well, thanks to John Lasseter who's an employee of Disney's animation. Plus many people have compared him to Walt Disney because his stories, in my opinion, have heart like Disney's. I've seen many Ghibli films and of course he treats some princesses, the ones that are called princesses in the Ghibli films, greatly. But Disney princesses are treated independent like in Frozen where Princess Anna went to help her sister or in Brave, while yes it's a Pixar film but Disney distributed, when Merida was the only one that was getting her mother out of the curse that she had brought in. Not all Disney princesses are bad.

I love how Miyazaki can make gritty, dark, and adult oriented films like Princess Mononoke, while also making family friendly happy films like My Neighbor Totoro. Same goes for the rest of the people at Ghibli.
