Random fun fact about this high school - it was the filming location for most of the High School Musical movies.

What what?! Homeless students? Please explain this to a non-american.

In 2012 there were around 1.1 million homeless students in the US.

Homeless also includes children whose families reside in a hotel.

Just FYI, so that anyone knows that it's not just kids that sleep on park benches, under overpasses or in a vehicle. Any place that isn't considered a permanent living space.

In the school district my gf teaches in they consider anyone living in a multiple family house hold, renting a garage, renting a single room or living in a hotel as homeless. 30% of the students are considered homeless in this district. I'm happy some of them have at least a roof over their head, but I still feel for them. Kids get stressed out too.

Considering how much more expensive 30 days in a hotel are (compared to renting for a month) I imagine most people living in hotels are only in between sleeping in the places you mentioned.....

Nah, many of those cheap looking extended stay places have really low weekly rates. And they don't check credit or rental history... something poor people regularly struggle with.

Usually people who live in hotels are not able to get the money required for first, last and deposit, or have poor credit and would not be accepted as renters.

This right here is why people end up living in hotels at a higher cost than renting a good place.
You can earn the $200/wk to pay for a room, every week. Being able to save up that ~$1,500 for a deposit and what-not is much harder.

What is common around where I live is agriculture. So when harvest season comes around farm owners will make deals with hotels and food trucks. They'll rent out the entire hotel for three months at a discount and then let workers stay at the hotel while they work the harvest. From what I understand it's used as an incentive to come work for that farm (I could be wrong). Most of the people working the harvest follow the harvest so they only stay in one spot for that time. And the food trucks just park outside of the hotels after work.

Another example: my mother had to wash her clothes in her bathtub from the time she was ten because she hadn't anywhere else to do it, and her tap water was already rather dirty so she wound up going to school with awful clothes

A local civic organization did this same thing for our local school. At any given time there are around 50 homeless students in our district. Either they couch hop with friends or they live in a car. Often they are too old to be wards of the state or they don't want to be in the foster system. It's a real problem.

American here. America is 3 really bad days in a row away from being a 3rd world country.

That's awesome. I'm going to see if my local CC has any similar programs and try to help out.

But does it cost allot? Some laundry machines are straight rip offs.

I believe it's free

I hope so, that'll make it allot better imo. I somewhat went thru this struggle even while trying to finish high school. Sometimes you can't help it but it's nice to know there is help out there.

This is not uplifting at all. This would be uplifting (maybe) in the 3rd world.

So glad to see that it's at a High school, not some college, and is not the only one providing these basic care needs.
