Between this and your idea for fixing offside, I'm starting to think you're Marco Van Basten

Football isn't NBA.

In theory, referees take note of times where the ball is out of play for an exceptional period of time. In lower leagues, many referees run two watches - one for tracking normal time, one to track stoppages.

In reality, time wasting is accepted as a part of the professional game and aside from bonafide injuries, and extreme cases (where the referee produces a card for UGC/time wasting), the ref is going to add ~30 seconds for each goal, ~30 seconds to a minute for each sub, and that's more or less it (again, barring actual injuries which tend to be well-tracked).

For the most part, it's a decent formula too.

Source: former R4 - haven't refereed in a very long time though.

For the Bournemouth match, I expected much more stoppage time than they gave. I don't think it's a systemic issue, but rather an issue with an individual referee or even just a bad game.

EDIT 2: Current time laws from FIFA

Allowance for time lost
Allowance is made by the referee in each half for all time lost in that half through:
• substitutions
• assessment and/or removal of injured players
• wasting time
• disciplinary sanctions
• stoppages for drinks or other medical reasons permitted by competition rules
• any other cause, including any significant delay to a restart (e.g. goal celebrations)

Referees must caution players who delay the restart of play by:
• appearing to take a throw-in but suddenly leaving it to a team-mate to take
• delaying leaving the field of play when being substituted
• excessively delaying a restart
• kicking or carrying the ball away, or provoking a confrontation by deliberately touching the ball after the referee has stopped play
• taking a free kick from the wrong position to force a retake

Plus cheers for the edit, very informative. 😏

Yeah that's a good formula, But IMO look at the game against bournemouth the other day. They made 3 subs, and wasted atleast 7-9 minutes. Faking injuries and taking set pieces. Maybe if there was just an official that added up the amount of time the ball was out of play and added it all on at the end of the half?

The thing is - that's part of the referee's job. It's not difficult to mentally keep track of time wasting and add it to the equation. I didn't pay attention to who was the ref for the Bournemouth match, nor do I know what his track record is on added time.

However, the PGMOL is going to provide regular assessments of their officials, and feedback on areas for improvement. While the refs in the premier league aren't the best ever - there are many who do a very good job. The problem is that any consistency issues and any poorly made judgement calls are rightly going to be pointed out.

I personally preferred to keep playing instead of both playing and refereeing, but most of the folks at the highest levels continue to referee for the love of the game. Yes, they're human and can absolutely have a bad day at the office - but they're not the devil incarnate.

Except Lee Mason...

Great comment bro, yeah it is the referees job, however he can't accurately add up the time wasted. As he's in the action with things constantly happening. Yeah as you stated they are humans, so it is an incredibly difficult job. And yeah Lee mason is shocking 😂. I also don't understand why it is so widely reported that referees are in our favour with added time and offsides and such, when it is so clearly the opposite IMO.

It's honestly not that difficult - when you do something often enough, you just mentally keep track of it. To this day I can usually pick an accurate amount of stoppage time even just watching a game. Being "in the action" doesn't change anything, honestly - barring hardware failure (I've personally had a watch stop working mid-match and ended up having to get another one from my bag), it's just something you get used to doing.

You don't get to be an R1 without thousands of hours of officiating under your belt, hundreds of hours of courses, and plenty of experience.

As to the bias? It's truly confirmation bias - people see what they want to see, and state as fact that it happens. Like many things, reality is often nowhere near either extreme.

I was wondered how the game would look if teams had a certain amount of time to play the ball in from a dead ball situation. (i.e. teams have 10 seconds to play a ball in from a free kick, corner, throw in, goal kick, etc).

That's a really good idea, would deffo prevent time wasting. However it would be difficult when teams are taking attacking set pieces such as pens and free kicks and such .

Perhaps there could be a different amount of allotted time depending on the type of set piece/dead ball situation

Yeah, that's a good idea. Would be interesting to see. Would probably be a humongous point difference between the bigger and lesser teams aswell. As if the smaller teams, tend to just park the bus and waste time whenever possible lol.
