Anecdotally, psychiatry clinicians I really respect have TOTALLY different ideas of how bupropion impacts people. Half say it’s default sedating, half say it’s stimulating (I’m inclined towards group 2).

*nobody* tells me there’s a paradoxical effect where a tiny number have [unusually sedating/stimulating] effects, but the default is [the opposite].

What GIVES.

Default textbook answer is definitely stimulating. It’s a modified amphetamine.

But all stimulants, including amphetamines, are sedating for some people at some doses. I had a patient who would get put to sleep by Adderall, Ritalin, and coffee. I’ve heard this framed as “stimulants are sedating for people with ADHD, that’s why they help calm them down”, and I know one doctor who would go so far as to give someone an ADHD diagnosis if stimulants routinely calmed them down. But I haven’t noticed a perfect correlation and “calm” and “sleepy” seem different. I myself sometimes get sleepier after coffee for some reason. Overall I am not sure.
