I actually cackled like the cold-hearted witch I am at that part. I love that whenever she has made posts like these, there's always that sense of humour of hers throughout. I'm all for this bitch.

I'm so into them. When I first saw the change a couple minutes ago with a Nina flair, my first thought was "Oh shit I guess verified queens get FANCY flair now," and also "Oh shit it's Nina!" But instead we all get this fabulousness.

Eurgh, I knew this would cause controversy with some people, if not from the fans on social media I knew Evah Construction Worker would have something to say. But anyway this whole idea of Nina's look being racist because she's black and it's a monkey look, I have something to say:

Drag has always been about challenging the norm and being subversive. That's where the whole art form began. It's about challenging societal norms whether they be about gender, or race. The goal is to be different, to be outlandish and to defy the ordinary. Here's a picture of Rupaul as Rachel Tensions in the To Wong Foo days wearing a Confederate Flag look. Drag is about making fun of society and parodying social normative ideas. A black drag queen like Rupaul turning a symbol of oppression like this and turning it into a "fuck you" glamour look is what drag should be all about. Drag should always be about surprise and trying something new. So if that means incorporating racially charged aesthetics and iconography into a look or mixing up gender normative aesthetics together to parody and trivialise these normative ideas of what is right and acceptable in society then so be it.

Taking ideas about gender normativity and the binary nature of gender or taking ideas that are racially controversial and spoofing them using drag is what makes this art form so special and different. Using drag as a vehicle to challenge these ingrained ideas in our society creates a way to completely take the power and negatively charged connotations away from these norms/ideas/aesthetics. It's what makes this art form so powerful as a way to actively and creatively fight against the narrow ideals around many different issues within our society. Criticising drag for being too controversial is sort of what drag is all about in the first place.

Haha you got me gal. But I've just been thinking about this a lot recently just in general and as a huge Nina fan I needed to say something. I want people to know that this type of drag that can be considered quite controversial and unsettling goes back to the very roots of drag culture itself. Drag was meant to be a way of crossing boundaries and satirising normal society. It's just my opinion.

[–]hreisc...and I'm at peace with that.

I'll take that as a compliment. But even if Sasha wasn't on the show I would still think the same way about this whole Nina drama. I do have similar opinions to Sasha when it comes to drag but that's just my perspective. My flair doesn't always have to speak before I do lol.

I don't really mind it being controversial, the issue I had with it was the fact it looked unfinished/half-baked/poorly executed.

Yes ideally it would look like this but she didn't have time and was rushing to get out on the red carpet at the last minute. She was livestreaming as she did this and she was so nervous and beating herself up about how she ran out of time. I really respect her for persevering with this look even though she was so close to missing the entire red carpet and all the press. To do this look it takes hours and hours and to be honest Nina's drag style overall is a lot more complex than just some lashes and highlighter. To do looks like this justice you need hours just to get the prosthetics right. Drastically altering someone's face to look not even human anymore takes serious skill and effort. Well done to her for actually pushing through with this look even though she barely had any time, she worked with what she had and still owned it.

What happened? Did they reschedule shit that drastically or something? I don't get why she ran out of time if she knew it was coming and did the look before.

My guess is she had to do something simpler to make sure it stays on through a 5 minute dance number rather than just a photoshoot.

I can't understand why her outfit was that rough too tho. Like... girl. Rough makeup could've been ignored if her outfit was on point but she just looked rather poorly put together overall.

I think she started it at the hotel but she missed the bus to the premier with all the girls because no one told her that it had arrived. That's really sad but I think that's what happened. So she shared an uber with Ginger and had to finish it all in the dressing room next to the red carpet last minute. Obviously the more time past the more stressed out she got.

Oh, damn, that's bad. Why the fuck did no one tell her that's some shady ape realness right there. Still, maybe it's just me but maybe clearing the entire day for this and getting ready super early would've helped her a lot so she wouldn't be freaking out last minute. At least there is a legit reason she ended up looking so rough.

they were at a photoshoot all day remember so I feel like she would of started earlier if she could have

I really like Nina, but I worry the detail and intricacy are going to fuck her over on the show. Quite a few contestant have said that they purposefully don't get much prep time for the runways and challenges, it'd be a shame if Nina's love of these complex looks ends up in her looking half baked all the time and the judges give her shit for it.

She was the queen that stood out the most (for me). Her performance was amazing, she was dancing and having so much fucking fun. She looked stunning. Whenever all of the queens would be on stage I would be looking for/at her. And Farrah, but that's unrelated.

After the performance most of the queens came down from the stage to interact with people. I went closer to the stage to maybe get some pictures (as this was my first drag show ever) and I saw Nina. Now this is the first drag queen I've ever talked to, in person, so I was SHOOK. I told her that I loved her and that she looks amazing and this bitch reached over and hugged me. I died, until I remembered that more queens are coming down, so I had to cut my death short. She's definitely one of my favorite queens ever.

People loved her. At least from where I was standing, all you could hear is people going insane over her.

Let's revisit some of Ru's very own wise words because you know she's also been accused by the SJW community and the likes of Kat Blaque of all sorts of stuff

It's like, "That's not what I meant and you actually know that's not what I meant and you're only using it because you have an agenda so that you could get attention for whatever reason you have.

I talked earlier about the sweet, sensitive souls who find this world, when they uncover life's cruel hoax. The first stage is anger. Then bitterness. The third stage is laughter and irreverence and understanding that, "Oh! I can have fun. Don't take it too seriously. Have fun with it." So twist a phrase, curl a word, paint on a mustache. We do not stand on ceremony, and we do not take words seriously. We do take feelings seriously and intention seriously, and the intention is not to be hateful at all. But if you are trigger-happy and you're looking for a reason to reinforce your own victimhood, your own perception of yourself as a victim, you'll look for anything that will reinforce that.

Really, read this interview again, it's great: http://www.vulture.com/2016/03/rupaul-drag-race-interview.html

RuPaul is the last person to look for a "wise advice"

[–]TimVdVNina Bo'nina Brown 13

You think so? I've always found her to be cerebral, wise and intelligent, like she understands society.

Most of what he says can be easily found at self-help books, he just uses a vernacular to come off as this "wise teacher", on top of the "holy goddess" aura that he usually has in the show.

If RuPaul's attitude during the SMailGate wasn't enough proof, his attitude towards some of the queens is the total opposite of the advices he usually gives and he always since to put the burden on the victims while letting the victimizers get away with it, saying "grow thicker skin" or "you are only self-projecting your victim complex" doesn't align with mission that drag promotes which is dismantling the system (or well, back when it started).

do you think that when rupaul is saying this, it is from fuckin nirvana or heaven or something? no, these are lessons that matter to her because they are lessons she learned and is continuing to learn. she's a human and she's often talking about her own flaws to try to relate to people so she doesn't come off twisted just for trying to be helpful. your perceptions are reflective of you, not her.

I'm white as freshly pressed linens so I'm not going to speak on what I think about the look re: race, but can we please as a sub not downvote people to fuck or jump down people's throats when they express an opinion contrary to Nina or express that they're not feeling a look she does? Please don't turn her into the Thorgy of this season.

That being said, while it's a creative look it could really be a lot better executed. I foresee her being criticised by Michelle for her technique. Also for not being glam while glam queens never get that kind of critique but that's par for the course for Michelle. "Harambes side chick" made me chuckle though

This is turning me off Nina.

Seriously though? Black people who find this offensive are suffering from internal racism? That doesn't even make any sense. So when people were offended that racists were comparing Michelle Obama to an ape, were we suffering from internal racism.

I know this majority white sub will cape for Nina because she fits that archetype they love so much so Kanye shrug

[–]MissSteakAlexis Michelle 6

I guess she meant like, if people think black people = monkey and are therefor "offended" that Nina, a black queen, would "affirm" this stereotype, they're actually racist.

Yeah, that's one of those "you called me out, so you're the real racist!1!1!!!" arguments. It's deflection and I don't buy it.

FWIW, I really liked Nina, but between the sub's stanning and this incident, I'm side-eyeing her now

[–]MissSteakAlexis Michelle 8

I mean, but isn't it true in this case? Like, if you think that she's AFFIRMING the stereotype that BLACK people EQUALS monkeys, you have notion of that. Like... if you don't believe it you should be able to laugh it out and be like "bwaaaahahah this bish is playin with white people"

Kay...so because the sub likes her you don't...you like the cool thing til everyone else likes it ...I see

I'm going to give Nina the benefit of the doubt and say she was inarticulate. I think what she meant to convey was that other Black people were more concerned about the white gaze of her Harambe's side chick makeup, than what they themselves thought about her makeup independent of whiteness. I mean, there are folks who are afraid to eat watermelon or fried chicken in pubic because they're so concerned about white folk.

Michelle Obama, hell the Obamas in general, being called or portrayed as apes, monkeys and every manner of primate were direct racist acts rooted in the antebellum South blah, blah, blah, coon caricature history, and quite different from Nina autonomously painting herself as a monkey.

Now if Nina's act played on racist caricature at all, that would complicate my own thoughts, but as it is, I think that's more of what she meant.

Can I not enjoy a queen dressed up as my favorite animal?

Or would it only be okay if it was literally any animal besides an ape or monkey?

[–]Magmar71Nina Bo'nina Brown 4

If it was a queen who wasn't black dressing as a monkey, it wouldn't be controversial (unless they did it with racial intent, but that'd be rightfully offensive). That's what I find most problematic about all of this, I mean what if it's also Nina's favorite animal? If it was, she's not allowed to dress as her favorite animal just because she's black? It's like people are trying to tell her what to be offended by, just because they are offended by it. She just wanted to serve some Harambe side chick realness, the only racism behind her look is what other people are projecting on it.

You wouldn't find someone using that slur towards another person offensive? I'm open to discussion and am interested in your perspective. I would absolutely be bothered by hearing someone calling a black person the n-word.

It goes back to the Michelle Obama/Ape references. Am I referring to myself as an ape if I find that racist screed to be gross?

I should clarify a bit, if someone just yelled that word out without knowing who it was to. If it was between friends and many of my friends use that word to call each other, I don't have a problem. Of course there will be racists but sometimes you gotta look at the context.
