What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

We are raising funds to test two things.

1) Do people care about preventing passive microphone recording on their phone?

2) Can our design accomplish the prevention of passive recording?

Noel designed a case for the iPhone 7 that blocks all 4 microphones when the screen is facing a flat surface.

We will 3D print these cases in soundproof material that should cost us $50.

We are happy to answer any questions and provide video responses as well, so if you like this project, but have a concern or question, please leave a comment and Noel or Kevin will respond within a day.

Risks and challenges

We identified 4 major risks.

1) The case does not effectively block all recording.
2) The case does not "feel" good in the user's hand.
3) Apple gets mad and sends us a scary letter.
4) Our 3D printer breaks.

To address #1, we will release an app that uses background recording to validate the case prevents any recording on all microphones.

To address #2, we know a material scientist that offered his expertise so we can find the best material, scientifically. (Seriously though, we are in good hands here).

To address #3, FUCK THE MAN

To address #4, we will simply refund everyone's money because our means to produce depends on our 3D printer. If this happens, we will release the CAD.
