Buckle up people, this is a long one.
Background
Cricket has this system called DRS - Decision Review System. Basically, a team has the option to review a decision given by the umpire if they feel that the umpire got it wrong. You are only allowed to consult with your teammates who are on the field and you only have 15 seconds to make your choice.
THE INCIDENT
The 2nd Test between India and Australia concluded on a rather ugly note. The Australian captain Steve Smith, a vital cog in the Australian batting line-up, was given out by the umpire while batting in the 4th and final innings of the match. Because it was a crucial juncture, he and his partner, Handscomb, discussed for a brief while if they should review the decision. Handscomb indicated his captain to ask the dressing room for confirmation, which is strictly against the rules. The Indians were furious and the umpire sent Smith on his way, which is what is to be done if a player is caught communicating with someone who isn't on the field while deciding a review.
That would have been the end of it, but boy oh boy the Indian captain Virat Kohli dropped an absolute bombshell in the post match press conference. Basically he accused the Australians of systematically gaming the system and that he had seen them doing this on multiple occasions.
Steve Smith's response was rather timid, calling it a "brain-fade"
