In case anyone thinks I'm not legit because my account is so new, I have had many screen names over the years. Two others are /u/pinkchips and /u/americanpegasus.

I wish you the best of luck. Stay safe! And take care of yourself.

For the time being, comply with your military orders. It doesn't help you to lose your career and it just gives them ammunition against you.

The order is a direct violation of my civil rights. I refuse to obey it, and laying down and taking it isn't on the menu.

I refuse to let someone at the Pentagon who has never met me decide my gender any longer.

The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) 809.ART.90 (20), makes it clear that military personnel need to obey the “lawful command of his superior officer,” 891.ART.91 (2), the “lawful order of a warrant officer”, 892.ART.92 (1) the “lawful general order”, 892.ART.92 (2) “lawful order”. In each case, military personnel have an obligation and a duty to only obey Lawful orders and indeed have an obligation to disobey Unlawful orders, including orders by the president that do not comply with the UCMJ. The moral and legal obligation is to the U.S. Constitution and not to those who would issue unlawful orders, especially if those orders are in direct violation of the Constitution and the UCMJ.

I'm fully aware of the UCMJ. I served too. I'm telling you right now that it's going to hurt you in the long run and ultimately hurt your chances to get the situation resolved.

They WANT an excuse to get rid of you. Don't give them the rope they need to hang you.

Ignore the bootlicker. Do what you think is right.

They have a lot of power to fuck you over at this early stage in your transition. I'm not sure that's a good idea.

I remember how desperately impatient I was at three months and am glad I didn't have a chain of command to worry about. But you do, and they can cause you a lot of trouble right now that they couldn't cause you nine months or a year further on.

Why the fuck do men and women have a different military appearance standard???? Why do men have to cut their hair while women don't? That's so fucking stupid it hurts my brain.

For uniformity, as well as proper gas mask fit.

But if this is the case, shouldn't women be required to cut their hair also? I mean, pixie cuts are a thing now.

They are. Unit specific regulations can be more restrictive then the ucmj. Just not less.

I don't make the rules, but that's the basis behind them

Women can have very long hair if they put it up. Women are also allowed corn rows, as well as having their hair down, at least to shoulder.

Men cannot. Period.

That doesn't make any sense

It does for beards, but that's about it. Firefighters generally have less restrictive rules, especially on the volunteer side (such as myself). Really, the only rule at my VFD is that I can't have a beard.

Beards make sense for gas masks but hair does not, especially when women don't have those rules.

As someone going through the same process in the active army (74D, Ft Stewart) your primary care provider should have outlined in your treatment plan that, until your gender marker in DEERS changes, you must adhere to the male standard. Everything up until that change should be brought up to your commander and Exceptions To Policy can be set in place. Not saying it's right or ethical but it's just the way stuff is working right now. This is extremely new within the DoD and I promise in 5 years much more in depth guidance will be given to commanders on how to help us.

My primary care provider and everyone in the process recommended immediate approval for me to move to female dress and appearance standards.

The final approving authority at the Pentagon (who has never met me) decided I wasn't transitioned or female enough yet. 😠

I feel what you are going through. Transphobia has to stop. Years ago my father was dishonorably discharged from the marines when word got to his superior that he liked to dress in women's clothing. He would have made it far in the military if it weren't for transphobia in the military.

😔

I'm so sorry. That is horrid.

My hair gives me superpowers. Last time I cut mine, it was cutting myself. The pain was real.

No more. I'm not going to let them do this to us anymore. This insanity has to stop, as does the poisonous mentality that 'oh no, don't do that! It'll just make trans people look bad and make everyone angry!'

I am not interested in politely asking for my gender identity any longer. There's so many transgender people in the military who are hiding and hurting exactly because of bullshit like this.

And if I bent the knee to this barbaric torture any longer, it would haunt me the rest of my life.

A stand must be taken.

"There's so many transgender people in the military who are hiding and hurting exactly because of bullshit like this.". Who are these other people and what are they going to do about this? You as a single "victim" means nothing to the military. If you want to enact change, find those other people and help mobilize them for this cause. You will get destroyed by red tape and legalese if you go at this on your own. You also need to market your yourself as a "compassionate victim". One that garners emotion from anyone who hears this story in your favor. By going AWOL, or refusing to cut your hair in protest, you are coming off as a troublemaker, which is playing into their narrative against you.

"A stand must be taken.". True. Do it using the proper channels though. It might take longer for your to prevail, but it's a lasting win if the culture of the military shifts in your direction, rather than against it because of obstinate emotional denial.

Mind showing us a picture of your current hairstyle? You can blot out the face, just need to see the hair in relation to neck/shoulder area.

What is the length of your hair, measured from scalp? And is that how you intend to wear it in uniform?

Also, may I see the back of your neck please?

Army vet, pardon my inspection. I'm just seeing if there is a communication issue where you are actually out of compliance with female standards, and it is being exacerbated by your transition resulting in the current situation.

Looking good though! I wouldn't have been able to guess you were male passing you in the street.

Thank you 😌. You are too kind: I know I don't totally pass as female yet, but also that should not be a requirement to move to female standards.

'Pretty' shouldn't be a prerequisite to being female.

That being said, I have made ridiculous progress in just a few short months as the following picture can attest to: https://i.imgur.com/VD9Cr8q.jpg

As far as the back of my hair, it's just a slightly rounded block cut. Nothing extreme about it.

I know nothing about the military but it seems like you know the risks of what you're getting in to. -> Whatever happens, I support you and I hope you're happy :)

P.s. You are almost glowing in those pictures you linked to in the comments. I'm super happy for you and hope your transition continues well <3
