The ironic thing is that, by his own (incorrect) definition of doxing, /u/SpyTec13 had to "dox" Rinzler to put together the "evidence" in his post.

Btw, organizing a bunch of funny memes for a day doesn't count as breaking reddit's brigading rules, and neither does googling someone's game or reddit handle count as doxing.

inb4 I'm banned for naming and shaming

Edit: my flair was deleted. at least I wasn't banned. /u/SpyTec13, did I accidentally dox Rinzler? stop being so triggered.

add to that the misapplied definition of "brigading".

If there was a subreddit rule against "low-effort" posts then i could almost see the point.

but no there isn't otherwise every "asp in front of something" post could be removed.

/u/SpyTec13 must step down.

Wasn't low effort on Rinzler's behalf, since he got in touch with people and organize something stupid yet entertaining, to let them create some non-malicious content together, to point out the issue with the overly annoying and mostly low effort "after ${amount of time} I (finally) got ${asset}" posts. :)

[–]CMDR_Agony_Auntdedicated BGS PvPer 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Erm you need to learn the definition of doxxing.

Doxxing only relates to personal info. Nothing in that evidence was personal from what was presented.

Furthermore, its not like Rinzler organized everything in absoloute secrecy. He talked on the AA discord which has quite a lot of members as well as in other locations. Any number of people could have shared the information with SpyTec.

[–]ddr330Capn Murica | The Code | Free o7o7o7 18 ポイント19 ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's the point, I was being sarcastic. Spytec is always throwing around that accusation in reference to people finding pictures publicly available and tied to both a person's real name and handle. It's not really doxing if you find pictures from googling someone's in-game/reddit handle.

It's like me complaining about someone googling "Capn Murica Elite" and seeing me feeding my snake on stream.

[–]CMDR_Bad_PilotingCode 27 ポイント28 ポイント  (3子コメント)

And we have the option to foster the community the way we want to. What happened yesterday and the day prior were two separate shows of force. One from the community saying let's fuck off for a day, and the other from certain moderators who said let's ban em all and let God sort it out.

The heavy handedness is what kills a subreddit. Fdev listens to us, why can't the mods?

Technically correct. But the reality is that in good thriving communities, the moderators always exist to support the will of the community. The job is to make possible the more difficult and less guaranteed parts of a high volume subreddit, i.e. Civil discourse, high quality content that isn't drowned out by meme and so forth.

Yes the sub is basically theirs to do with what they want. But, what a good moderator should want to do is to use the sub to serve the community that has formed around it.

[–]MulsanneMulsanne Sarthe 25 ポイント26 ポイント  (5子コメント)

Agreed. There's a pretty serious issue of moderation in this subreddit. Moderators should serve the community they volunteer to support. That is what respecting the moderator position means to me at /r/formula1.

I don't see that here. I see a slow and ineffectual response, that's wide of the facts on the ground and lacking in basic decorum.

It's no way to run a railroad.

[–]WebtheWorldwideTashkaelon 10 ポイント11 ポイント  (1子コメント)

And you (and your team) are doing a good job running /r/formula1, thanks for that!

Subs rise and fall with their moderators. Of course a name of a sportsseries or a major game bring a steady influx of new people and topics to talk about, but the difficult thing is to make the people stay and return. I reckon that it is easy to say from the vantage point of a simple user but you have to strike the delicate border between individual freedom and the best for the community itself. If it gets to serious, people leave. Same goes for the polar opposite.

I found it quite entertaining yesterday to see the different posts and I was positively surprised that due to the voting system good content still had the ability to rise (e g. the fan made 2.3 trailer). Now it developed into some kind of personal drama. I don't think that /u/spytek13 deserves the blatant hate some people here express, but it's a sign that there is a major issue between the community and certain mods.

Some of them are more stealthier in their actions (which I support, as I regard a mod more as a "keeper of the infrastructure"), others more obvious. However there is a distinction between moderating and governing.

I Will Mod /r/EliteDangerous if SpyTec steps down.

  1. I've worked hard to help this community, answering new player questions mostly on my own, for a few months now.

  2. I started Iridium Wing, a friendly player group that escorts explorers (who are typically unarmed), for free. We have great diplomatic relations with many groups in Elite, and they can all tell you what kind of person I am.

  3. Here's my moderation style(read the whole thread). What happened was that a moderator posted something the community found offensive, as a personal statement, but the community thought it was an official mod statement, due to an error in flairs on mobile. I talked to everyone, diffused the situation, and made sure everyone's concerns were addressed, and fixed the problem. I didn't name call, ban, shift blame, or act like a huge dick, or use it as an excuse to oust a mod.

  4. I've contributed some great posts to this sub, like This about Engineers and This about Grind

I'll be more than happy to moderate this subreddit. Elite Dangerous is an amazing game. This sub reddit is an amazing community, and it deserves better moderation.

Why does moderation, a volunteer-only thing, seem to go straight to people's heads?

I swear, I've been using BBSs since the 80s, and you give someone the tiniest bit of power and they turn into a terrible person almost immediately. Part of the reason why I won't do it.

While I understand the basic rules of reddit and /u/SpyTec13 's rights to run the sub as he damn well pleases, as OP states, we the users also have a right to voice our opinions and request change. I, for one, would much rather participate in a community whose mods act as representatives of said community while performing their duties, in lieu of dictatorial/oligarchical ones. Although this site would never work as a republic format, I feel /r/EliteCouncil was a worthwhile and beneficial sub and support OP's request for reinstatement. I would also support a change in top mod. I'm not calling for anyone's head here, just for someone more in tune with the game and community. There's never been a question of the heavy hand of /u/Spytec13. At this point it feel like we're past just moderating.

On one hand, I can understand how mods would fill that flooding a subreddit with joke/meme posts can be disruptive to community discussion. On the other hand, I and many others felt those posts were actually funny. It was only one day during the weekend on an otherwise slow day.

They fit the forum requirements of being about game content. They weren't AdviceAnimal memes or anything like that; they were actual screenshots (well, except for that one photoshopped image of David Braben on Mars with a teacup.)

They were funny for that one day, and I believe that if it had carried on any longer than that, the humor would have been worn out and most would have been downvoted on their own.

You see, communities like this can actually be self-moderating to a degree. I believe we would have collectively reached a point where we said, "Alright, ALRIGHT, enough is enough," and those posts would have subsided on their own, without any interference from mods.

I mean, I get it. You're a mod of a nearly 90,000 user subreddit. You want to do a good job and make sure the community isn't spiraling down the toilet with senseless posts. You feel it's your duty to moderate and keep the subreddit on track. You can do that, but, like raising a child, you can't hold their hand every step of the way. You've gotta step back sometimes and let them do things on their own, for both their sake and yours. Otherwise you're going to be absolutely exhausted trying to control/moderate every aspect of their lives. And I think the same can be said about a community like this.

I'd wager most people in this community are within the 20-35-year age range (obviously with a few outside of that on either end, but that's to be expected.) That seems to be roughly the age demographic here. While I appreciate the mods' efforts to maintain order here, I do feel that they maybe overreached a bit chasing after the ones who started what was basically a harmless prank. I hope I'm not overestimating the abilities of the community here, but I believe we can be mature enough to handle something like this on our own.

The worst that happened was some good content got pushed to the bottom of the subreddit, but I believe most of that eventually found its way to the top anyway when people grew tired of the meme posts on their own and upvoted anything that wasn't another "After X time I got Y" post.

I don't believe anyone should have been banned over it. Maybe a stern warning to cut it out if it persisted longer than a day. As others have already stated, sometimes it's good for a normally pretty serious subreddit to be silly every once in a while. If people didn't find the posts humorous, they wouldn't have been upvoted as much as they were. Also, as others have stated, it brought our community closer in a way. We all got to come together and laugh at ourselves. I'm sure most of us here have posted something like what those posts were teasingly making fun of. That's all it was.

Sorry for typing an essay. Those are my thoughts on the matter.

TL;DR: I believe the mods were maybe a bit too harsh reacting over what amounted to a simple, mostly harmless (heh) prank. After about a day, most of those posts would have been downvoted to oblivion as we, the community, would have gotten tired of it on our own without the need for mod intervention.

Edit: Reworded a couple of points for clarity. Thanks for reading. :)

[–]grass_typeMorrenwell 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Okay, as someone with 0 context for this whole affair, here's what appears to have happened from my POV:

  • a bunch of "after [time period] i finally got [thing]" meme posts showed up covering the whole board
  • the next day they're gone and a sticky is up saying those posts are now considered low-effort content (i kinda agree) and are no longer accepted
  • sticky accuses some unnamed player group (ffs, can someone please unambiguously identify them, i don't speak Subreddit Innuendo) of deliberately promoting those meme posts and announces a temp ban on their leader
  • today this thread goes up accusing sticky-poster of being ellen pao or hitler or whatever

can someone explain to me:

  • why this is a big deal
  • why there needs to be moderator reform

[–]Britannkic_Join the alien crusade today and see the galaxy 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Its become a big deal because the guy who organised the shit post spam was also a mod on this sub. Basically he took a shit in his own backyard.

The group he belongs to, SDC, are known for their 'creative disruptive' agendas in game and forum.

[–]msqrdAlonzo Solace [Adle's Armada] 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Except that the shitposting was well-received enough by the sub for one of the posts to make the front page of Reddit. The moderation team -- led by Spytec and filled with stooges who do his bidding -- decided that people here didn't enjoy the (in my opinion) fun stream of posts, and anyone who posted one got a 30 day ban from the sub. 30 days?!? What in holy bejesus? 30 days? No warning from the mods, just 30 day bans.

The mods, meanwhile, started wholesale deleting posts that disagreed with them (a delete is different than a remove -- once a post is deleted it's gone forever, even other mods can't see it), banning people all over the place, accusing "a particular Discord server" of condoning or even being a nexus for doxxing (a claim that has proven false and has been retracted by a different member of the mod team today). The list goes on.

Rinzler is indeed with SDC, and I'd say they're one of the most misunderstood Elite gaming groups. They do organize disruptive stuff in-game, but it's chaos with a goal: drawing attention to and fixing broken game mechanics. Prime examples are heat and healing, both of which are being fixed after SDC (and likeminded groups) drew attention to them. Despite common misconceptions, SDC actually want the game to be better, and they want players to be better. If you do ever get blown up by them, message the commanders involved and ask for tips: they'll happily take half an hour out of their day to help you.

Assholes with good intentions are still assholes, and I really hate the mentality that disruptive behavior is somehow justified because it's an attempt to improve the game or make me better at PvP.

If you want to gank people, fine, gank people. Unless I'm trying to force mission refreshes, I always play in Open, I understand and accept that risk. But don't piss in my mouth and tell me it's raining.

If you do ever get blown up by them, message the commanders involved and ask for tips: they'll happily take half an hour out of their day to help you.

I would MUCH rather be killed by someone that roleplays an evil pirate than by someone that then PMs me saying "maybe next time you'll be better :)" or, worse, "maybe now FDev will make it harder for me to gank you :)". That's just obnoxious.

This is pettiness at levels I have never seen from moderators, ever. Putting immature tags on the post? The mods here are fucking losing it and something needs to change.

[–]monkberg 31 ポイント32 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I've got no strong ties to the community, I've got no special skin in the game other than being just another CMDR trying to make my way in the universe - hell, I don't even hate PVPers since I mostly play solo for now, so no salt from me yet (may hop to open in future).

With no agenda and no sides to take, I can say it's ridiculously unprofessional for a mod to remove comments that reasonably criticise them, or to handle moderation in a thread criticising them. It's also unprofessional to label a thread like this "griping" or "whining".

I don't even care about the shitposting at this point, whatever you think about rinzler's tempban at least it'll pass, but this coupled with the closure of the council subreddit is just bizarre. Backlash like this doesn't come out of nowhere, and if it happens it's a sign that you done goofed.

Even if the mods are doing nothing wrong, they have to be seen as doing nothing wrong. Transparency and community participation matter because they build trust, and if you don't have the respect or even the bare trust of the community you claim to serve you have nothing.

At the rate we're going I hope the community figures out a good way forward, or we might end up pulling a NoMansHigh and forking the community with a new subreddit. We'll all be poorer in the latter situation, so I really hope it doesn't come to that.

Well if I get B& for this o7 CMDRs and for the record it's been entertaining being in the same community as you all.

The one thing I worry about is that both sides here want to take/keep power, I honestly feel that in the situation that Spytec is removed (I myself and those that know the community im a part of, should know we had our own issues and ive brought him up before regarding enforcing something of your own opinion that wasn't in breach of rules) That I don't want this community to turn into just a PvP focus, the primary push seems to come from SDC and AA at the moment, however in this community we have roleplayers, traders, explorers, freelancers etc etc.

Who would be deciding who is on the council ? if its player vote then thats gonna get rigged.

That doesnt work all the time, people just arent (usually) fair and honest, i'm a good example of that and thats why i have beumer and jamie and others to help moderate my discord.

The beneficiary of that is why it just doesnt work on this subreddit, in the discord, i share the same power as my moderators even though i "own" the discord. I dont have some elevated power above the other moderators like what happens in this sub.

It baffles me what an online forum, fake internet points, and internet power can do to people.

The posts the other day were brigading if you use a massively wide definition of the word. The doxxing accusations had nothing to do with the original posts, but apparently were an integral part of the so called argument against the posters.

If you are going to mod, make sure you know how to do it. Keeping everyone in a community happy is not possible some times. Hard decisions that may not be popular need to be made. Don't make them on a whim and what seems like a personal vendetta against a certain person and the groups associated with them

Just cuz you can say anything in a position of power does not mean you will not be called on it. Prove beyond reasonable doubt that rules were broken with proof. Not a bunch of loosely connected screenshots, which as far as I could see, broke no actual rules. They were nearly breaking rules. But who remembers who nearly won an Olympic medal in the 100m sprint.

SpyTec13 should have gone a year ago. It's getting beyond a joke.

If he had just let things be yesterday, the shitposts would be all forgotten by now. The fact that this drama is continuing is down to the inappropriate way in which this sub is being moderated; it's making things worse, not better. If moderators make things worse, by definition they have failed.

The problem is that /u/SpyTec13 doesn't understand that a moderator's job is as a janitor, not a dictator. He's never understood that. Most people learn over time, but it seems like he's not learning much.

[–]Pave_LowTycho Dirge 10 ポイント11 ポイント  (2子コメント)

This feels more like the typical 'gang of 20 with an agenda' mission than any sorta issue with the mod. All the folks with the top upvotes are people from the same E:D communities and clans. If I learned anything from r/politics it's that the 'voice' of a subreddit isn't always the participants, but the people that shout the loudest. All I see here is a lot of shouting.

Whenever I see pogroms like this against a moderator I can't help but think there's an agenda behind it. Truth is that being a moderator is more-or-less a shitty thankless job. And it only takes a few loud angry voices to make that just shitty and thankless enough for them to just say fuck it and hand the keys over to to someone else because they cannot be bothered. And of course, anything a moderator could say in his or her defense is just abuse of their own moderating privileges. So basically the mods are boned any time someone goes full force in stirring the pot. Either things go to shit because they let the pot get stirred, or seem like dictators for daring to stop the stirring.

So basically, I consider all of this bullshit until shown otherwise. I've been a member of this community for years and haven't really noticed 'Mods gone Wild' like I have in other communities. I don't know who the hell we're supposed to democratically elect or whatever to run a place I don't even think is broken. And experience has taught me the 99% of the time when SubredditDrama arises, the everyday folks only see a thin slice of what the real machinations are.

Hell this is the web site that ran Ellen Pao out of town for FPH, giving control of Reddit back to CEOs who have banned tons more communities than she ever dreamed.

[–]Eco212 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Hell this is the web site that ran Ellen Pao out of town for FPH, giving control of Reddit back to CEOs who have banned tons more communities than she ever dreamed.

This was one of the dumbest things Reddit ever did. Spew racist sexist and downright abusive insults and complaint threads for months at someone who didn't even make most of the issues happen. Just a big example of bandwagoning.

And it is very similar to this situation. I don't care if what Rinzler did is against Reddit rules or not. He did something retarded. He did something as part of his clan's agenda while being a moderator (!!!! this is so much of a bigger thing than people realise). People are hating on /u/SpyTec13 and /u/StuartGT who to me just seem to be DOING THEIR DAMN JOBS. You know who's removed most of my comments on this subreddit? Rinzler. You know what most of them were about? Either discussing what I think about logging "encouraging exploits xd", or expressing my opinions about SDC "not being respectful right ok xd".

You know what I think the mods should do? All stop moderating for a month or so. Watch as the subreddit descends into chaos. Then people might stop jumping on hate bandwagons.

As unaccustomed as I am to take on the leadership of the subreddit as well as the forums and indeed the itself game, I will merge them all into one almighty union. We shall call it Elite Redums. Or the alternative Foreit Dangerous. I considered Elidit Forerous but that's out as it is just silly.

In all seriousness this was never going to go well. Both sides are fighting immaturely and neither have the best name in terms of representing the community as a whole. It's like 2 politicians attacking each other and it's not which one you like but instead it's which one you hate the least.

Anyway, the best way forwards to save the sub-reddit is for this all to die down and in a month or two there is a quiet transition of Mod(s) ideally to people totally unrelated to the current ones with the remaining least controversial Mods staying and joint-leading with the new Mods to ensure it goes smoothly. A total handover would just be chaotic.

Alternatively is for a new sub-reddit to be created and evolve pulling users across until this one subsides into nothingness assuming the other one is successful.

I don't see how the current state of affairs will continue without destroying the sub especially given the how proficient Elite players are at 5th Columning, if there's a banwave it'll be a week before every new post has to be mod approved as there will be so much spam and attacks that make it untenable for all the normal users. If there isn't then I expect the underhand snide comments and attacks will continue making this a nasty place to be for normal users.
