Disclaimer: I am a BJP supporter
As you might have seen, BJP currently seems to be winning everwhere.
However the state of opposition is pathetic. Absolutely absent
Apart from Rajya Sabha, there is literally no check on BJP's power and influence
A good opposition is neccesary to keep the government in check.
When the Government becomes too overconfident or too disconnected with ground reality, Stuff like "demonetisation" happens
Congress is in Shambles. Regional parties are cancer. AAP is still in its early stages.
What is the opposition doing?

We are following history here, if you look back some decades, Indira Gandhi's congress seemed unbeatable aswell, and all the opposition got together to defeat her. THE PROBLEM: they tried to defeat her, made her look bad and slander and down play her but didn't provide alternatives to policy or governance, intact most non congress govts followed the policies made by congress govts (even the current one albeit changing names in their favour) HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF: Unnecessary alliances of opposition parties Glorious examples: AAP-Cong Delhi (AAP a anti congress party) regardless defeated BJP Almost eliminating them from the scene, RJD-JDU Bihar (JDU a party winning on anti corruption even joining with RJD who's supremo is convicted in fodder scam), SP-Cong (SP working on Lohia principles but giving rise to dynamic rule and aligning with congress who both Lohia was against) Reason: All parties have a only one thing on their minds, defeat modi, not BJP but MODI. They all are trying to defeat modi while BJP Defeats them. Solution: Parties need to stand firm with their roots and ideology, bring out original policies, say no to freebies as they only amount to debt to the state. AAP has the perfect opportunity to become a third biggie but they need atleast 3-4 states, where they have atleast a good number of seats in opposition, target the bjp bastions and capitalise on the collapse of congress in states and take their place as a opposition. Dont get in with Mamta or Nitish. Stay independent.

These guys should get their shit together first.

I am just waiting to see when will Congress realize that Rahul Baba is not the right individual to lead the party.

I am afraid they never will. It isn't healthy for democracy to have just one party be in control; you need an opposition to keep them honest. After all these years of Congress you would think we had learned this lesson but instead we have replaced one group with another and are on the path to repeat the same mistakes.

You do make a good point.

If UP polls go the BMC way, then the Rajya Sabha will also not stand in their way. I don't know what the reasons for the BJP swing were in Mumbai, but if in an urban area, they have done so well, then in a rural area, the initial impact of noteban #demo will be even more favourable for them.
As it is, they have been using the money bill route to push legislation through Rajya Sabha, but after UP, they will be uncontrolled.

Even if they sweep UP (unlikely), it would still take a lot of time for them to have any kind of majority in RS.

Nope. Even if they get majority in UP, RS will still not be theirs.

Rajya Sabha members are elected for a term of 6 years, so the only way for the BJP to get a majority would be to dominate elections across India and somehow remain in that position for 5-10 years.

Supreme court also has checks and balances

Why would you want a opposition just for the sake of it ? It sounds retarded.
And anyway the Indian public is the opposition. If the party screws up they will be voted out.

A strong opposition gives more incentive for the BJP to work harder to earn votes.

It's just anti-BJP sentiment veiled as concern for a credible opposition. For most of India's history we have had a one party rule with very weak to non-existsent opposition. And in spite of Congress's glorious mismanagement we turned out fine because of the checks and balances in our constitution. I don't know why it has suddenly become so alarming that there is no opposition. It's not the public's duty to prop up an opposition for the sake of it. People will vote for the best alternative.

It wasn't that long ago that the Congress enjoyed this same kind of dominance. Nobody really seemed to mind then.
Anyway, elections have their ups and downs. The BJP isn't doing that well in other states it's been contesting in.

History repeats itself. When Nazi hysteria took over Germany all opposition parties, communists, republicans etc were first discredited and then eventually reduced to nothing. Same happened with Kammergericht ; it was infested with Nazis (SS to be exact) in a slow process and finally left with no credibility.

however i do agree that there needs to be credible opposition, these nazi comparisons are probably even more stupid then what the opposition is dishing out .
