Jonathan Brown, an Islamic Studies professor at Georgetown University, has raised more than a few eyebrows with his recent lecture declaring that slavery and rape are a-ok under Islamic law.
Alarmingly, at least one person in attendance described the lecture as “a 90-minute defense of slavery which included an explicit endorsement of non-consensual sex.”
How explicit are we talking? Well, the two phrases that person – MyStudentVoices.com writer Umar Lee – is referring to are “it’s not immoral for one human to own another human because we own lots of people” and “consent isn’t necessary for lawful sex.”
Brown also reportedly insisted that Islamic slaves are “protected by Sharia” and described them as “investments” and “walking venture properties.”
Of course, this would all be very hard to believe if a self-described fan of Dr. Brown hadn’t uploaded the entire lecture – those statements and all – to YouTube.
Unsurprisingly, Brown’s talk has generated quite a bit of backlash online.
Some, however, are happy Dr. Brown made his statements on slavery and “non-consensual sex.”
This isn’t the first time Dr. Jonathan Brown has faced criticism for his statements. Brown – a convert to Islam – has been a regular topic of derision for JihadWatch.org, which published an article yesterday highlighting his avoidance of actual debate in preference of name calling.
