Many of you asked in your comments why I put music over the video clips and why I used music different from the original world music you heard when playing through the game. Here are the reasons:
1) Most video clips had no audio at all and after a few minutes the whole video felt boring without melodies.
2) The whole video felt uncomfortable and disturbing when I put world music over it and changed the music track with every clip.
3) Putting long music tracks over "many" video clips resulted in a positive feeling that different clips belong together. The effect was that connected video clips suddenly created a "golden thread" and a storyline.
4) Achieving this goal forced me to use different songs than in the original game from time to time. Believe me: I tried to use the original songs whenever I could but sometimes it just didn't fit with the following scenes and keeping them would have resulted in keeping uncomfortable crossovers during the whole video.

I would like to see Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, and XII done with ps4 graphics. But if they do that that they would have to make these game ARPGs with Kingdom Hearts gameplay if they want to attract the younger demographics as well if they want money out of it. I'm okay with that because I'm leaning a lot mre towards ARPGs.

+Tong Zou FFVII gets a lot of attention because it introduced a lot of people who never played RPG to the genre (especially here in the states). Me personally I had been into the RPG genre. Also it was one of the first PS1 games to introduce cinematic cut scenes. I still remember the commercials for FFVII back then it was ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (nothing but cut-scenes were shown) a lot of hype and marketing were put into it. With that being said FFVIII IMO is a freaking masterpiece FFVII yes a good game but it didn't draw me in like FFVIII I didn't have the desire to finish VII I finally did a few years after it's release. But VIII man I couldn't put that game down the characters pulled me in. With VII the story pulled me in........then it kinda went all over the place. BUT YES REMAKE VIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't hold your breath. It's polarizing among fans, and FF7 will be at least 3 parts at least a year apart. I wouldn't say it'll happen for at least 5 years if ever.

+Minh Tran 8 doesn't really need a remake, 7 does because of it's awfully dated 3D graphics and it seemed they couldn't really get their story across very coherently. Leave 8 alone!

Nowadays many games are produced on a low budget (same as movies), and then people wonder why they fail. At least this game had (and still has) it all.

+Tong Zou (GuitarGamer44) Selling 8 million copies is NOT underrated. It is in the TOP 3 of best-selling FF titles along with FFVII and FFX. It's just that the ones who dislike it make it seem like it is very hated when it is not.

+Chris jT ikr! I've actually rarely seen anyone hating on this game (the only reason to dislike this game is maybe due to the Draw system), but story, characters, world & graphics are still awesome!

+NoctLightCloud Yeah, I'm not a fan of the draw system yet it is still my fav FF game. You can play the whole game with no-encounters and it's awesome that way.

But Triple Triad was so fun! XD They tried making another card game in FFIX, but it just didn't work out as well.

+Wakka02 Oh god, that card game was also not that much fun (+they forced you to win multiple times in order to continue with the story). I dislike the fact that the computer can basically decide which cards you get and which card the opponents get...it just doesn't seem fair to me. I have to rely on the computer's mercy. (I think I've played "physical" card games too often xD)
But both were good mini-games nevertheless^^

FF7 & FF8 was the golden era of the Final Fantasies. There have been other good ones outside that era but none of them could touch you as emotionally as these did. Even watching this video made me feel like I wanted to cry coz of all the memories they brought back.
No one forgets the first time they meet a Weapon face to face, and back in that day we didn't have the internet to guide us when stuck, you either had to buy a guide or suck it up and soldier through. You actually had to spend hours training and if you were too lazy with your training regime you'll almost certainly get killed. Ahhh, memories!! Growing up sucks!!

Auras my friend, the key is auras. When fighting Seifer just keep drawing auras off him until Odin kills him. If you did it right then you should have enough to last you till the end of the game. Incase you didn't know, auras give your whole party instant limit breaks for the duration of the battle.

+Sage I try to play this game every May. Some years I make it all the way through, sometimes I don't. I'll never forget that it was May in 1999 when I beasted on this game for a whole month. You're so right about having to figure it out yourself - I missed some things and couldn't beat the last boss. Took me about 8 tries or so. Finally really beat the game in Nov. 1999.

I was lucky on my first playthrough because I was a draw junkie. I drew a ton of Aura from Seifer and the rest of the game was piss easy. I had enough to both train and take out the boss, with plenty to spare. Since then I've done that on all my playthroughs. Just make sure you don't waste too much time fighting because he gets killed off after a while by a GF. Just heal, protect and draw so that you can get as many as possible before he's killed.

Hey, have any of you got any good recommendations to any games similar to FF7/8 on PC? I've tried FF13 and the levelling system doesn't agree with me. I'm thinking of trying The Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky, has anyone tried it? I just want a really lush turn based RPG that I can get lost in this weekend.

+Sage sorry for the late reply but Trails in the Sky is a good game, it's worth spending ur money and time on it.That game has a couple of missable sidequest,not as much as Final Fantasy though since Trails in the Sky is only the 1st chapter of the Trails in the Sky series (3 chapters),2nd and 3rd chapter havent been translated yet orz

It's never too late to play FF7. Yea the graphics are crap but you get used to them within the first hour of your playthrough and actually grow to love them.

Wow, even I (who really suck at some games like shooting or racing games) don't judge a game I'm bad in for the simple reason of...well, the game being too hard for me...xD Some people complain when games are too easy, others complain when it's too hard... At least with RPGs, you can get a game guide and make it through. In shooting/racing games, you actually need SKILLS. (That's why I'm forever doomed xD)

its debatable both are very beautiful stories but ff8 love story seems out of place given that after squall gets stabbed by the huge ice pic and fell, after that the hole game seems to be a illusion from the ending we got, so the hole love story really doesnt fit from that parade scene onward, and ff 10 was basically a time travel game at least the end doesnt basically undo the entire story-line they gave a reason for tidus leaving, ff8 on the other hand undoes everything as the ending is basically an illusion i was very disappointed

+Chris jT Ever heard of an opinion?? Even so FF8 has a mediocre story compared to most of the series. Its the hype of FF7 that made it so big. I mean really it just FF7 but with changes that made it worse not better. (not talking about the story) FF10 sold well because it was the first Final Fantasy with voice acting and the first Final Fantasy on the PS2. I personally think the peak of the series is 4-7 in terms of quality even though FFIX is my favorite.

It's not really fair to say this. 11 was an MMO and can't really be counted as part of the main series. 12 is loved by a lot of fans. 13 was the only main series game to come out last gen. Throw in IV, IV-2, and Type-0 and your point is sort of invalid.

+Lward96 No, you're wrong. FFVIII was critically acclaimed and sits at 90 on metacritic, just 2 below FFVII and FFX. Quality is very subjective. People hate the most loved of things as well. FFVIII for the most part was praised so I think we can both agree it was a quality title. Maybe not for you, but it is my personal fav of the series. And I started with 7.

I didn't find this game any harder than other FF games ... i'm not a hard gamer (some would argue i'm not even a gamer), i played this when i was a kid (around 15) and the game isn't in my native language, so i don't understand your arguments.

Watching this for the first time, and I'll be honest, this is something you just don't see anymore. This level of creativity, attention to detail, sheer scale, and a sense of ideology which you feel without fully understanding... Should really invest getting this game :O

I fully agree with your opinion Hylian Jim. Just to ensure you have the right expectations while you are about to draw nearer to this game: Back in the days the ingame graphics were very limited and stories could only be told with loads of texts in speech bubbles. Squaresofts main concept and strategy for the Final Fantasy games were to make characters and story lines believable by introducing expensive and very detailled video sequences. So you'd see no ingame content but only snippets out of these sequences in TV commercials for example. Back in the days noone complained about the ingame graphics because the FF8 graphics were state of the art at that time and the quality of the video sequences was like from another planet. Nowadays the video sequences still look cool, but you should check Youtube for some combat scenes first, ensuring you don't have too high expectations when it comes to the limited graphics and the active time battle system. Cheers!

I'm not too worried about being let down, I have played Final Fantasy VII numerous times, and gone fanboy on it, watching movie, playing spinoffs, reading book, etc. One thing I hear everyone say is that Squall is too angsty, which I can see getting annoying, but again, I'm not too worried. ^^

First 100% CGI film was in 1995 so certainly from after that time they could do it.
PS2 and PS3 bring several upgrades though as well as how their technology keeps evolving back at the offices.

Hell Yes! Cloud has No personality, unlike Squall. I mean the story line is fantastic in both, but I find myself caring more for the characters in 8. Plus I like the game play more. Oh and FF8 has Zell!

It's about philosophy. It's actually on a deeper level than most people realize.. A popular search asks "Is squall leonhart a jerk", but his actions/intents actually have the same core values as Buddhism. I'm not trying to convert anyone, or skew anything, but there is much symbolism, but it also it pays loyal to none. He questions all things. Truth, right, wrong, perception, reliance, these are all topics. I find his whole character as incredibly (to a strange degree) relatable, which is why it is my favorite...

One of the things that is missing from these newer ones is the story and the characters. While I thought the gameplay itself was fun in 13 the story and the characters just didnt "grab me" like the older ones. To put it plainly I just didnt give a shit about Lightning or Snow or any of them

I actually love Final Fantasy 13 (NOT the sequels) but it doesn't compare to 7, 8, and 10. Games nowadays are focused on making killing fun, especially in multplayer. You hardly ever find shooters nowadays with a good story, and RPGs have gone to hell completely, with neither fun gameplay nor story.
Ahhhhh I wish I would've been a gamer back when games were still good.

You know, I think FF8 had something the other games didn't; I can't quite put my finger on it. I mean, I'm a huge FF7 fan, nostalgia basically dictates that I must be since it was my very first Final Fantasy title, but FF8, from beginning to end, just resonated with me in ways other FF titles didn't.
The opening, the story, the music, that epic battle with the two Gardens, the outer space with Rinoa and Squall, and the ending where you actually get to see the characters you love happy and with each other, ah...just pure awesomeness. Easily one of my favorite, if not the favorite, FF titles. It prompts the phrase, "They just don't make'm like they used too."

after all these years, this game is still great! I just finished it. this needs to be remastered to ps3 or ps4! anyway, my favorite cutscenes were the galbadian missiles, the garden clash, and all that has ragnarok. ragnarok is the coolest spaceship ever!

Honestly this is probably the best one out of the FF series. I remember actually watching my uncle play this game, and I never got tired 😅😂. Till now I still watch FF8 playthroughs.

This is by far the best final fantasy game in the series, the game developers should create a modernized version similar to what Microsoft did with halo the anniversary. Would sell millions, guarantee it.

I've always wanted scenes remade from multiple FF games, but not the whole game. They usually change the battle system, character design, and sometimes story (etc) for "remakes", but if they just remade a few beautiful cutscenes, without messing with the already amazing games, I'd be happy. I want to see Squall and Rinoa dancing together, Cecil becoming a paladin, the battle with Gilgamesh and Enkidu, Locke in the pheonix cave, and countless other scenes in HD without changing game mechanics.

FF8 needs a remake...provided Square Enix doesn't feminize the look & physique of every single male characters, that is. Squall of 1999 looks so much better & manlier than any other new version, plus I can't bear to imagine Barbie-like Irvine & Zell!

but yes a remake would be amazing, voices would make the cutscenes so much easier to understand, but the voices would ruin what we imagine they sound like.

FF8 is the best game i ever played. It has been many years since i played it but i still miss it. I like the story, music, songs, graphics, characters and everything. It is a perfect game. It is one part of my memory. Even untill today, i am still listening to "eyes on me" which is the theme song of ff8. The singer is faye wong. Rinoa is felt like a real person for me. She is such a lovely woman. Square should release a new ff8 updated version for pc today because it has many fans. i am sure i will play it again. (I tried to buy other late versions of ff, but i gave up. All of them are not mature and the stories are not attractive. Sigh!) I still keep on waiting...

did you find all quistis blue magic? did you draw 100 Ultimas from Ultima weapon in the underwater sea lab? beat omega weapon at ultimacias castle without "the end" but only the knight/hero potions stolen from saifer? got a gold star on the card complete deck of triple triad? get 99 cursed spikes from tri heads at the underwater lab to refine one dark matter for either 100 ultima spells or Quistis pulsar quasar blue magic? (I did both as the alternative was to use the pupu card, and that was not an option) Did you carefully level up Zell and Squall with GF Infrit so they gain gain that STR +1 (a 90 boost of STR at level 99! the lower level you get infrit the better so when the hit they make 9999 damage each time. And so many nifty things you could do so ultimacias last battle turns to be so easy you had to do it twice to read all what she had to say? man that game was awesome!

FFX was my first final fantasy game at the age of 10. Did some research on final fantasy and VII-VIII became my next obsession. I'm 23 now, and I'm still amazed by the graphics and storylines. FFVII, VIII & X series was when Square Enix or should I say squaresoft was at their highest.

I was for me my first time through with no manual I tried at least a dozen times and finally with luck I was able to beat it. I stopped playing for at least 3 months due to the fact I was so flustered at that point.

The game cutscenes made me cry without all the dialogue, the music for each scene was perfect, and the storyline was, in my opinion, the best one out of all the FF games. I love this compliation, thank you so so much for posting this! I want to get the PC version of this game soon :))

There is something so out there about this game's atmosphere and story that i always dug. There are enough details but just few enough to create a sense of wonder. The characters are lovable and the music is incredible. This speaks to a happy time in my life...I was 10-11 years old, coming out of elementary school and popping this in to many a sleepless night. The story was touching and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I sit here 28 now, thanking this game for all of the memories

the magic of final fantasy from 1 to the X on ps2 i always wonder why i get more pleasure to replay those games than any other rpg, the cut scenes are spectacular , the stories are just great , full of caracterre with a personal story with them, there s also great invention like how they get catapulted to the moon and catch in giant net, and aeons, guardians, or espers that you always wish for more especially in ff9, but anyway, not to forget the great music, final fantasy is really magic, and i doubt the get back to that magic for the other ff after 10, i would be just happy if they did a rpg as half as good as any of the previous ( the one before 12, 8 is one of my favorite but it s always hard to choose between 6, 7, 8 ,9 or 10

100% agree with you, althou the 1 till 5 are decent old skool rpgs, the five got a nice job system even better than in ffx-2, i believe the square enix corporation is going wrong, targeting for the masses to get more profit, it s like if a record company would exclusively editing pop singer that bring lot of fan with easy music, let say dustin bieber to illustrate that comment ...the graphic quality and the hyperrealism is stunning but the story is lame and hollow the caracter got nothing, it s all been emptied of what good rpg use to have, love, fear, feeling of being lost of looking for your identity, humour, surprise, greed, hatred etc, it just turn out as a fighting platform to reach from point a to b , kill opponnent and score, it s no more the final fantasy even if some names remains like sid , it s just like onimusha, a linear way to get to the next boss. sure they lost something along the way, but when you target masses you don t need that kind of thing, and most players i know who don t play rpg , don t need of even wasting time with a nice story, they just to go aroung and shoot around , drive a car like in gta and ff could become just that a serie of mission, ( actually they already did that in core something and another on psp, i played it but can t remember any interesting story

Fun fact: Onslow in the sitcom "keeping up appearances" was a huge fan of the ff series, when he purchased ff8 he would spend all of his time in Fisherman's horizon, just so he could listen to this track, he eventually formed a friendship with the musician (sorry I forget the name) the musician had a one off special Fisherman's horizon cap made for him, which the actor who played Onslow refused to remove up until his death. He can be seen wearing the cap in every episode of Keeping up appearances. Now this part is just a rumor but apparently at the funeral everyone talked to each other based of the script in fisherman's horizon but it is a fact that the fisherman's horizon theme was played at his funeral.

this game was so weird. but in a good way because it's original in that regard. they hit the nail on the head with the fantasy based on reality theme. even with the GF and magic, it had a very sci fi feel to it. i love the dark and gloomy aesthetic this game had. it probably wont ever have a remake because FF15 is also a fantasy based on reality game. but thats ok i guess, because the way the game was made had such a 90's feel and a remake would ruin that

Years ago when I was a child I saw a fan made video that had FF8's cut scenes used with Enya's "Only Time" and I was hooked. At the time I didn't know what this game was or where to even find it. I was extremely bummed out since I had no way of looking for the game. And a couple of weeks later my birthday came around and my parents took me to Shopko so I could pick up a gift. I was browsing the PS1 aisle for not even a minute and I freaked the fuck out. I instantly recognized the characters on the cover from the fan made video and bought it instantly. As a child I didn't understand what the game was about but I enjoyed every moment of it. Now that I'm older and more knowledgeable, I have a better understanding of the game and I always go back and play Final Fantasy VIII every couple of years. Great memories.

Guys, I don't know whether to laugh or to puke. This video just got a "3rd party match" on youtube because of a pop song from "Nya" called "Whom It May Concern (Intro)". Its label is "cdbaby" ...com. She stole the FF8 end boss music track "the extreme" and made a pop soung out of it which she then licenced. This is just ridiculous but I don't know what to do besides acknowledging the 3rd party match. If you have any ideas let me know. :-/

this was the first and only FF game I played,,but I loved it from start to finish! I clocked the game 5 or 6 times,spending hundreds of hours on it! I loved the Cards game,I could spend hours just playing cards.....and Rinoa is such a Babe!

no, because of level scaling. when i level up, the enemies also level up. takes away the feeling of progression

+Galimah No one said otherwise. I only pointed out that suggesting the game itself "sucked" because you personally found it too difficult, is unconvincing when the vast majority of people who criticize the game call it too easy.

nonono it was WAY too hard. true rpg grinding for exp was obselete as all the enemies scaled in level with the player, and not only did they scale with me, always making it HARD...they also got new attacks and spells. simply put, a very crappy game. i hate, HATE scaling...like plague. the more i grind, the harder the game become. from an rpg perspective - retarded system

+Galimah Well I just put up a playthrough on YouTube showing that you can actually just go through the game without having to grind for anything. It most certainly does get challenging toward the end, but that's what makes a great RPG - you can go about beating this game several ways. You can become over-powered rather easily if you learn the Junction system and actually put thought into what you're doing (rather than just level-grinding mindlessly). But yeah, just so you know, you're in the minority in terms of saying this game is too hard.

+Patricia Forehand Because they were not part of the rendered movie clips. They were only put in front of it, sometimes granting the player a limited movement so that it looked like they were part of the cut scene.

I was confused because I've played the game and I always saw my characters in these scenes. It's impressive what they were able to accomplish at that time. I'm always amazed by the cut-scene graphics.

And alot of these are out of order. Also never saw the scene where the camera thingy im space gets destroyed by the monsters. Just like a two second clip but never saw that before either

+Robbie Clark All these scenes come up when you FAIL on certain tasks. Square sorted the clips by name already. I didn't dare to change their order.

To see that cutscene of that camera getting eaten by that monster you have to view the screen that showed you the enhanced image of the moon accelerating with monsters then when you press the X button on that same screen that scene plays

The scene in this where balamb gets blown up instead of flying away from the missles. I never saw that cutscene in the game. Was that made up just for this or is that cutscene actually in the game? If so how do u see it. Ive played this game easily over one hundred times and never seen that before.

personally I think this is the weakest final fantasy on ps1 but out of the entire final fantasy series the gun blade is a kick ass weapon

I LOVED Final Fantasy VII and VIII, and crazy enough I LOVED Final Fantasy III, yes 3!! For some reason I always think about the phantom train and the apartment building, I think it's the music that brings me back to those scenes.

I don't like what you did with the music and the editing, on most scenes you cut out the music used for that scene. They were there for a reason, like attack on dollet, which you neither used for the battle in dollet or the attack on Balamb Garden.... I like your use of Find your way... but so far am dissapointed you didn't stick to the music.

I loved this game so much, the graphics and gameplay was Awesome but yet I still did not know what the hell I was watching. I didn't understand not one bit of the story.....I just couldn't piece it together.

Holy crap!!! I come from the 13 series and people say characters from the older series are better and have stronger personality. Are they stupid? These people don't even talk and they don't even have dialogue. How is this so much better? Jesus people are dumb...

Great job on editing the music. I forgotten how beautiful these cut scenes were. I also really want to give it another shot, because I didn't like the game. And I'm hoping I can appreciate it someday.

Ah memories, for me was my best game ever, the story the ambient , the music , the characters. for the time we were kids it was perfect . Also by coincidence [NSA] Chip here :) Thank you mate for sharing this

fyi ff8 was demoed on ps2 hardware back in 1999 before ps3 came out....the graphics are toy story like.

my game stucks at the dancing cutscene. It moves a frame every 5 minutes. SO each time i play this game from the beginning again i start a day earlier and wait until the cutscene finally ends

Is there a way I can get the sound of the mobile Balam Garden hover engine? 21:51 , 22:36 - 22:49 ; 25:56 ; 27:18 ; 27:40 , without the music in the back ground of course, only the engine... just love the steampunkish sounds it has and wish to make a loop track out of it. Galbadia Garden don't sound even close to how cool Balam garden does.

Hi, yes this should be feasible: You need the PC version installed on your computer and a certain extracting tool for FF8 (google for it). With this tool you would be able to do the same I did: Extract the original video clips out of the FF8 gaming files. Most of the original video clips have no music in the background and you would hear ONLY the effects. This way you can easily open the video files in any video editor, listen through the audio track and get the particular sound elements cut out of it.

if they could've put music in the cut scenes, why voice acting as well? is there a difference between voice acting and soundtrack?

There is no music in most of the cut scenes, the world music continues when most of the clips start playing. For those which have music or other noises the compression of the sound data is very high and hence the quality is very low. Having low quality voices put over these (at that time) "state of the art" video clips would have resulted in a poorer viewing experience I guess. After all it was an easy decision for the game developers I think:
1) Let's Keep it "consistent" -> The player is anyway used to read the text dialogues.
2) Let's save money -> No voice actors to pay, no translations to do, no lips animations to develope.
3) Let's save disc space -> No additional audio data on the disc.
Positive side effects which, I doubt, was considered by Squaresoft at that time:
4) Grant access to a wider audience -> These clips can be viewed and understood world wide, even hearing-impaired people can watch it (a fact which is prooved by the demographics of this YT videos audience).
5) Leave room for imagination --> It's up to the audiences imagination what the characters are saying, whether their voices sound mean, lovely or cool, etc. .. Well... this factor would at least harmonize with the game title which is after all "Final Fantasy". ;-)

I don't know if there are others, but the translation, of course, is different in some parts. Out of the top of my head, I remember Edea's speech in Deling City is different from the US and European versions. I recommend you search for the Ultimania for this game and the translators notes if you want to learn more. Some FF forum should do the trick :)
