I have got a feeling that the MSM in India is more and more showing content that suits the agendas of Left parties such as Congress/AAP/CPI(M)/etc. Here are some of the examples:
  1. They made a field event out of Dadri incident, but did not give even a minute's coverage to Moodbidri incident in which Hindus were killed.
  2. They portray ABVP students as the worst kind of goons there ever were, and yet don't cover the likes of Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya and the left gang who are equally bad, if not worse.
  3. They are eager to criticize the government for demonetization in almost every news article, yet fail to talk about the good that has happened in Railways, Governance, SBA, Utilities, etc. since BJP came to power.
  4. They advertise Akhilesh Yadav's (SP) agenda on the channel as if he is the incarnate of Mother Teresa, yet forget to mention the improved state of electricity and water in Maharashtra under BJP's rule.
  5. They never question Akhilesh/SP over the law & order problem in their own state, and yet hasten to accuse the PM for something over which he has no jurisdiction (such as Dadri).
All in all, I've got a feeling that the Left parties are conspiring to destabilize peace and well-being of our country and the media is in cohorts with them.

You're watching too much NDTV. Switch to Times Now and Zee News once in a while

though I agree to what OP said, fuck times now and zee news and India TV, I would anytime take media that criticises govt even though biased to the one which curry favour with govt, whoever is in govt, media needs to keep check on them

Proof? ABVP goons were caught on camera beating students and professors. Do you have anything against Kanhaiya and Umar?
[-]jasounseebourne 16 points
Apparently, words are anti-national BUT beating up people in front of high courts and in colleges is absolutely fine.
The hypocrisy.

As the media of any economy matures, it automatically leans left. Eg. Most of mainstream media in the US is left and liberal, with the exception of Fox News.
Individual members of the media who dedicate their lives to becoming educated and in some respects the gatekeepers of "truth" and what's happening in the world, are often liberal and progressive themselves.
EDIT: Found some science to back it up (in US context).
[-]Dude12876 5 points
india's per capita income is around 1800 dollar and 50 percent of woman and children are anemic so i really doubt the arguments like maturing of economy
[-]Vibhor23 6 points (2 children)
Most of mainstream media in the US is left and liberal, with the exception of Fox News.
Fox News is the biggest news network in US. You can't get more mainstream than that.
[-]sammyedwards 7 points (1 children)
And it is the exception
[-]Vibhor23 11 points (2 children)
Fox News isn't a single channel. Its a massive news network, there are local Fox affiliates for different states.
Almost twice as many people watch Fox News than any other left wing media.
[-]sammyedwards 1 points
True that. But , the general mainstream sentiment of US media is to the left. Just like how right-leaning the Sun is the highest selling news paper in the UK, but the media in general is leftist.
[-]Randiathrowaway17 1 points
There are also affiliates for ABC, NBC etc. That doesn't prove anything.
While it is the biggest, it's also the exception. All the other channels are either moderately center-left(ABC, CBS etc) or left (CNN) or flaming left (MSNBC).
WaPo and NYT are both liberally biased. RINOs are the only GOP types they like. WSJ is nominally "conservative" but is actually just shilling for big business and neocons/military-industrial complex. They resent the GOP grassroots. They advocate for open borders and other elite projects which the GOP base doesn't like. As I said, neocon/Wall Street type "conservatism".
It's silly to pretend there is any parity in the US media.
[-]tempstem5 2 points
I never said Fox isn't mainstream.

[-]Randiathrowaway17 18 points (2 children)
Tell me a single (democratic) country where the media isn't significantly to the left of the population. In the US, they have been openly campaigning for democrats for decades. When I say "openly" I don't mean to say that they admit it, but their coverage is so slanted that everyone understands it to be the case.
Part of it is the profession. Who becomes a journalist? Typically someone who lives in very large, urban areas and who travels a lot. You become a cosmopolitan in such an environment. Most of your surroundings are significantly more liberal than the population at large.
Also, the left dominates the university sector - at least the humanities - and journalists are trained in those institutions.
Take TISS for instance. They came out with a demonstration in support of Kaur(a.k.a. "martyr's daughter"). The only thing that surprised me was that it didn't happen faster. And TISS is among one the most elite humanities institutions in India, and it is an indication of where their political compass is.
TL;DR This is not unique to India. If anything, it's less pronounced than it is in many richer democracies.
[-]raks1991 2 points (1 children)
This is with the English media. Among the Hindi channels which is watched by the majority in the country, the right has more influence.
[-]Randiathrowaway17 0 points
Correct, but the same can be said in the US. Talk radio is huge, for instance, and it is dominated by loud-mouthed right-wingers of the same type such as Arnab. Elite media tends to be more influential and it is often left-leaning for the reasons I described.
[-]Shivamn666 1 points (1 children)
So assuming that left dominate humanity so can it be true that generally the professional college tends to be right wing?

Professions which interface with society extensively and without a sectarian agenda tend be to centrist or left of centre. Because they see the problems and inequalities in the society and find that following a democratic, pluralistic and distributive approach is the best way to tackle it.
This is the reason why academia, media and much of NGOs are what they are.

That being said, I have seen enough newspapers covering policy decisions of the Govt. very closely, both the good and the bad.
It is most probably one or both of these : Either you started paying attention to the media after demonetization or you are a right-winger with no patience to listen to logic.

Umar Khalid and Kanhaiya are incredibly bright, eloquent and articulate chaps. They speak better than most people who give soundbites on TV. The very fact that you club them with nameless, faceless ABVP goons tells a lot about you.

um afaik according to all the pictures and videos ABVP students were the ones who were pelting stones, hitting people and giving threats. My own friends had to lay low for a while so I think you should set aside your confirmation bias. If the State was so concerned about Kanhaiya and Umar disrupting the secular and national fabric of India I wonder why they are out on bail for more than a year and no chargesheet has been filed yet?
This issue was never Left vs Right, it has been painted like that by the media. This was common students vs ABVP. Even AISA was criticised heavily when they tried to appropriate the peaceful protest at the Arts Faculty as their own, their speaks tried to hog all the limelight and didn't let the students from different colleges talk about their experiences during the violence.
I'd say a fair share of the media is biased towards the right too, since we saw just how selectively one frame of an entire video was taken out of context and a woman (I met her at the protest before all this drama unfolded) was masqueraded as anti-national when she made crystal clear sense.

False equivalence on most of the stuffs you have written here! ... Whatever you term as leftist are actually "liberal values".
Moan as much as you like but the constitution of this country is based on liberal values which eventually decides our engagement in society.
Unfortunately, the current Indian right wing do not care much about the constitution and therefore you come across criticism of right from not only left but people in middle of left and right, liberals and even those who are economic right but socially liberals.
[-]jasounseebourne 4 points
Moan as much as you like but the constitution of this country is based on liberal values
Good point, one has to read the history of how RSS opposed the constitution and on what grounds, just to get a sense of how different our society would have been had it not been for the liberal values of our constitution.

These murders are carried out by maoists and naxalites aka left. So India is world's topmost left terrorism affected country by number of deaths.
[-]raks1991 1 points (1 children)
He was probably talking about the communists in India who participate in elections like CPI(M) who have been accused of carrying out killings of RSS cadres in Kerala. Nor outlawed organisations like CPI (Maoist).

[-]powerofreason 7 points (2 children)
Why are you destroying their strawman arguments? They define left as Maoists because it's easy to attack their crimes

Yeah also try asking any right wing jihadi/KKK/VHP/BajrangDal nut how they define themselves politically. Going by your logic, right is right then, banned, blowing up, shooting people, inciting riots or not.
The point is, has left ideology killed people? Yes it has. Has right wing ideology killed people? Yes it has. So what now? Identify the mistakes and correct em. Instead each group keeps going even farther left or right. The far left and right are both opposite sides of the same coin.
[-]feel_good_factor 1 points
agreed totally with you, no arguements, just was trying to prove a point to raks1991, and I don't call myself right, as I hate religious bullshit and don't like growing income disparity because of right wing economic policies, but I certainly wouldn't call myself left, hypocrisy is overwhelming for me.

Because socio-cultural Right Wing is nothing bigotry, racism, sexism, hate minegring etc.It has no intellectual weight and is driven by persecution complex. This is true in all countries including India.
That being said, your question itself is biased and your picked examples or presented them in a biased way. In India, currently, RW bigots are controlling the media.

Simple. With more education, and better living standards people tend to go out out of their hometown, and home country more. They experience and become acquainted more with the 'other' who are different in culture, tradition, taste, outlook etc in life. They become more tolerant to the differentness of other. Concern, not only for oneself, but for others become the cornerstone for a leftist community or society's mortal fiber. But it is not that it has no side effects but in larger societal context it is good. And also there's a saying -trying to be a 'leftist' society before a country reached a reasonably well off then it will be mired in more abyss, and then again if society totally aloof to the 'poor and unserved' section of the population then again it's a recipe for disaster. So, the way is to choose the middle path. I dunno I might be wrong, but for certain, I hate all the left and right people equally.
[-]contraryview 2 points (2 children)
First tell me what is 'Right' and what is 'Left' in your opinion. Is the Congress leftist? If so, what's the difference between Congress and CPI? Are all highly religious parties right of the centre? If so, what's the difference between a Shiv Sena and a AIMIM?
[-]raks1991 4 points
According to some here, Left=Maoist. When you criticize ABVP/BJP, you immediately become a leftist, which translates into a Maoist. After that, you'll be blamed for the crimes of the Maoists.
[-]feel_good_factor 1 points
I'd say on the basis of economic policies, almost no major party in India would qualify as right, not even BJP, nobody wants to take away subsidies, ban corrective actions(reservations) and ease out labour laws. This being said, if right is defined only on religious affinity, BJP, SS and AIMIM on the same side of political spectrum, but hardly anybody acknowledges that.

It takes time to break this alliance or replace it with another bigger alliance.

Left doesn't care about free market or free speech, it only cares about who is batting for them and it is ruthless against those who are critical of them. Media knows that when Right is in power they will anyway have to fight it out in the free market and perform to survive, but when left is in power it's no longer free market and performance doesn't count, if they lick right asses they can even get the powers that be to annihilate their competition so that they reap a windfall in a monopoly like situation. There is no benefit for media in being pro right, they will anyway have to fight it out in the market.
[-]shakepear -2 points
Tell me about it. The Indian media is horrendously left leaning. The hypocrisy is obnoxious.
The problem is, India doesn't have a bigotry-free conservative libertarian alternative. I specifically chose the word conservative instead of "right wing", because those words immediately remind many of violence. And before you jump to say, Swarajya Mag, let me assure you that the answer is no, it's not conservative. It's partisan and narrow. If a conservative news portal/site can't make a liberal go, "huh! I may be wrong on this", it has already failed in its objective.
If I weren't whole heartedly involved in something else, I could've started writing a serious conservative libertarian blog.
[-]ramis666 0 points
I have a theory.
It also depends on what you choose to watch over what is really over there. When you refer to Indian media, you have to make the distinction of which media platform you're especially referring to. If it's the internet then the tendency is to lean to the left more than the right because that's what sells here. The internet for news, especially English news is still used by a small proportion of the Indian population and they are generally the urban-educated-middle classes and on the internet the general tendency is to be politically right than morally reprehensible. This leads to us seeing what we want to see exactly, I doubt if that will be the case with regional channels/Hindi media (TV/print) because from my exposure to these channels I find the stories very right leaning than left.
There was a post here on a reddit a week or two ago where someone did an AMA from a leading broadcaster and he mentioned that English news is a loss making proposition in India and it targets a very niche segment which tends to be more elitist (in thought and action) than the actual money spinners which directly play to the masses.
The media is here to sell, to make money and they make money the best when they pander to your own drum roll and so it's very easy to be misled whilst seeing only one side of the picture without considering everything else that happens in the country.
This theory has been further expanded in a brilliant BBC documentary called 'Hypernormalisation' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fny99f8amM) which is a must watch to understand how the nature of our media is constantly evolving to pander to exactly what we want to listen.
Ultimately, I would say that you only present a very limited view of the whole coverage of news in India (which is HUGE subject) and you want a generalist answer basic on the small sample size you've built. I would say otherwise, most of Indian media is right leaning than left if I see the bigger picture. On the internet it's a different story.
Thank you.
