The appearance before reporters comes as pressure mounts on him to recuse himself from any investigations into Russia’s connections to President Trump’s campaign, after it was revealed Wednesday that he spoke with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during the presidential race.

Sessions is facing escalating calls from Republican leaders to clarify testimony he gave during his confirmation hearings, in which he denied having any contact with Russian officials.

Pressure is also coming from the left, as the attorney general faces mounting calls — led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer — to resign from the Justice Department completely.

And House Judiciary Committee Democrats have asked the FBI director to open a criminal investigation into whether lied under oath.

But a short time ago, President Trump expressed "total" confidence in Sessions and dismissed the bipartisan calls for recusal.

“I don't think so,” Trump said when asked if Sessions should stop involving himself in the U.S. government’s Russia probe.
