Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines modern setting with vampires, the playstyle differs greatly with your choice of vampire "class". The Game was never really finished so you need to look around which community patches/mods to install.

Baldurs Gate 1/2 I'd say the second Game leads most TOP-RPG of all times list. Your decisions matter a lot in those.

I think the general idea of vampire society is super lame but Bloodlines is an excellent game and a great example of a "deep" RPG. Definitely have to second that one.

Classic choices would be Planescape Torment, Fallout 2, or KotOR 2.

Planescape: Torment is basically like playing a novel, in all the good ways. It's the only game that actually had me reading the text of characters in different voices to myself, it's pretty easy to get immersed in the writing.

Fallout: New Vegas is something I'd recommend. It has a lot of choices and consequences.

Witcher series as well, but there's less character customization if that's important to you. But decisions you make in the Witcher games are really important.

I'd also second Knights of the Old Republic I and II.

Dragon Age:Origins is exactly what you want.

As someone has already mentioned , kotor 1 and 2 may work for you as early masterpieces of bio ware. Fallout 1 and 2, maybe new vegas will make it for you, witcher series .

Check out Pillars of Eternity.

-Pillars of Eternity -Witcher 3 -Tales of Maj'Eyal (this one is a particular favorite of mine, though technically it's more of a roguelike with an RPG setting. Still, it scratches the itch and it is ridiculously deep. No, deeper than that.)

As for "making your own narrative", it's not an RPG and I haven't played it, but I hear that Rimworld really does let you make your own narrative where most RPG games (and even the "deep" ones) basically have you pick from a narrative from a list and make some relatively minor adjustments to it.

The witcher games, specifically 2 and 3. 2 has a better story, but 3 really makes you feel like geralt.
