We're still waiting on an effective PS3 emulator. Our best bet is Sony's "game streaming" thing they had been talking about releasing on PC. Sure, not as good as porting, but it's a start.

It's called PlayStation Now, and currently only allows for PS3 game streaming to PS4 and PC.

Emulation of the PS3 is mostly tied up with emulating completely different hardware architecture though.

In theory PS4 and Xbone will be easy to port as they use the same architecture as a PC.

You'd still need to emulate or recreate their hardware API, similar to what Wine does for Linux. Xbone is probably pretty similar to DirectX.

You run into issues with games been encrypted on disc and current consoles require everything to be authenticated.

Apparently it's not that easy as we still don't have an original xbox emulator. That console was also x86 based and even used directx.

The reason why there's no xbox emulator is because it had no good console only exclusives, halo 1 and 2 are on PC.

Right but the firmware is one hell of a tough nut to crack. Afaik only a older and obsolete firmware has been broken. In fact it is pre katana era firmware.

    It wouldn't surprise me if PS4 emulation came before PS3. Ps4 runs on x86 architecture and the PS3 was really tough to develop for IIRC

    You'd be correct there. Both the Xbox 360 (IBM Xenon) and PS3 (PowerPC Cell) utilize the Power Architecture instruction set (vs Intel and AMD's x86 instruction set).

          If you can get a cheap PS4 I'd recommend it. Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, Nioh, Yakuza 0, Until Dawn, Horizon Zero Dawn, Sony has some top quality exclusives rn.

          I purchased a PS4, in part, to get this game.

          But honestly. I would much prefer to get it on PC or even Xbox.

          • Because my kids play xbox and I could get it digitally and then they get a 2nd copy for free (Kinda. Long Story.)

          • Also, If it was on xbox then there is a chance I would get a free copy on PC.

          • Aaaaaand if it was on Xbox then I could play it on Scorpio when that comes out. Which might... just might be able to squeeze out 1080/60

          PS PS4 Pro's barely making it to 1080/30 or the checkered/psuedo 4k/30

          So... While I got a PS4 Pro for this game. And it looks amazing and runs well. Xbox or PC would have been a MUCH more preferred path for a lot of reasons.

          The only case for me is the sharing of games. Aside from DRM free. (And I do not mean stealing i just mean letting my kids each have a copy on their PCs)

          Steam sharing locks anyone from from playing ALL of your games if you play 1 game. So Steam sharing is the worst of the game sharing available vs DMR Free, PS4 and Xbox.

          But beyond that. Yes I would much prefer PC. Then i could play on my laptop during lunch at work, on the couch next to my wife, and on my 4k screen on my desk. PC wins in most cases for me.

          Yeah, steam family sharing is awful. I did it so that my sister could play fallout 4, but then I found out that it wasn't like I could be playing counter strike or something while she was playing Fallout, I just basically had to play my xbox/emulators/origin games/uplay games/etc. At that point, I would rather just buy another copy of the game to gift to them.

          Steam family sharing is terrible, it's like loaning out your entire Steam account, if they play, you can't, and their VAC ban is your VAC ban.

          Yeah I don't like that at all. My daughter likes to play some games, but I usually just let her install them and she can play offline and I can still use my account on my computer.

          You can choose whether they can access all games or select individual titles. When they play and you want to, they get 5 minutes to finish up.

          I just used it as a way for all my friends to have the CS:Source textures for GMod without buying it. As a family sharing system it's complete shit for no reason at all.

            I mean Cemu is already working for a lot of Wii U games. Zelda only boots up currently, but that's already incredible. It's only a matter of time before people can fully emulate it at 4K.

            Refurbished Wii U is $200 straight from Nintendo, used on ebay possibly even less. I'd say worth it to play those Nintendo 1st party titles, plus you can get Breath of the Wild on there, though it will only play at 720p as opposed to the switch which runs it at 900p.

            There's plenty of good titles on there, and we know after Friday there will be no more made, so you can judge pretty easily if a Wii U would be worthwhile for grabbing and playing some titles on it that you missed.

            I imagine the price will continue to go down since it probably won't keep as popular in it's after-life like the Wii did.

              Get a PS4, one of the best things I ever did. My gaming habits have changed drastically and I rarely game on anything now, but the few games I enjoy are shared across PC and PS4. I do have to curate games on PS, as aim assistance is a must, but the 30FPS isn't really an issue to my eyes.

              FPS stuff doesn't matter to me, I don't really care about it. I don't want a ps4 because I know for a fact that I wont ever use it. I like gaming on my PC and that will likely never change. I can use a controller or M+K and I can do other things on it. A couple exclusives aren't going to change my mind.

                I've been ruined by PC. The game is gorgeous and a lot of fun, but even with a surprisingly stable 30 fps all of the motion blur makes me go cross eyed.

                I've looked (for several hours) at someone playing that game in front of me. The moment the camera turned, everything except Ratchet was a blurry mess. I'm not sure it's better to do that over well-defined jerky motion at 30 FPS.

                  Yeah it's doing the same to me as well. I found that playing further away than my normal distance from the TV helped a bit. Even the Pro performance mode doesn't help with the framerate.

                  Such a great game hampered by terrible framerate.

                  Question? How much is that attributable to your tv? A couple of years ago, I bought one of Panasonic's plasma tv's, and, though I don't have the specs off hand, it has a high refresh rate and motion-smoothing settings. With the motion smoothing off, games suck and movies are great. With motion smoothing on, everything is very clear and looks great. Just have to turn it off to watch a movie or show because then, everything looks fake.

                  The difference is astounding. From Assassin's Creed 4 (oh, those ship battles) to Witcher 3 and the redone Ratchet and Clank, it makes a huge difference.

                  I was hooked the moment I saw its debut gameplay at e3 last year. Then interest earned after I heard about it being a normal 3rd person Far Cry, but after watching a couple of hours of gameplay and reading reviews I think that I'll really enjoy this game.

                    It's a no brainer to like great games that happen to be PS4 exclusives. It's also one thing to like the PS4 as a game playing device. But to say you love the PS4 because of the exclusives just sounds off to me. It seems to me that the PS4's only contribution to those games is not allowing you to play them on whatever platform you want. Is there anything else it adds to the games?

                    Definitely not worthy of a console purchase for the game alone, but PS4 does have a nice selection of Exclusives. My wife mainly uses it for Netflix and whenever a game comes out for it I'll use it.

                    And yeah the new LoZ looks amazing. I really want it, but might wait a few months. Nintendo has always had a speciAl place in my heart because they're never really competing with PC and are off doing their own thing.

                          I know console exclusives are frowned upon here but I see nothing wrong with getting the game for PS4. As someone who owns both a battlestation and a PS4 I think it's great that I can switch between both entertainment systems. Make no mistake - I'd love to rather play the game at 1440p 144 hz than on console and I do realize that my PS4 has nothing on my PC but part of being a PCMR is knowing what consoles are compared to PCs. I think a lot of people here are hypocrites when they are willing to spend 600 bucks on a GTX 1080 and are quick to throw shit at consoles when exclusives come out. You dont have to see this game on twitch. You can get it at a descent price. The PS4 is $230 - heck I got mine for $199 on Black Friday. And yes - games are 60 bucks but you can wait for their prices to drop (though I will adnit they dont go fown nearly as low or quick as PC games) This is a great game to get for the PS4 and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you know what you're getting an you're happy with it. Don't get the pro though. It's a complete waste of money

                          As far as I'm concerned, so long as you have the money to buy the consoles and the games for them on top of keeping your PC updated whenever the need arises, I don't see why you wouldn't.                           It's not neccesarily hypocritical.

                          Sure, the 1080 will cost you twice as much, as the console + game, but you'll probably be using regularly. We are talking 100s (probably 1000+ if you're buying a 1080...) of hours.

                          But it's harder to justify buying a console for a single game, worth 20ish(what I heard) hours. Yes, you can use the ps4 for other great titles, but there's no guarantee that you'll ever touch the ps4 again, after you finish the game.

                          The way I approach exclusives is to not give Sony or microsoft any money. when the Next generation of consoles come out, a lot of people will sell their old console super cheap to pay for the new one. a month or two after the new generation is out I buy the old gen second hand and play the super cheap exclusives.

                          It's fucking great. It's basically Far Cry combined with Brave and robot dinosaurs.

                          If you think console exclusives suck now, they suck way more in the future. There are dozens of games I played on my xbox when I was younger I'd love to spin up now and again, but I can't, they were released on that console and died there.

                          There are so many old PC games worth playing, a huge library of titles with dedicated fan support and community patches or mods. This cannot happen to old console games, I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants to play something like Dungeons and Dragons Heroes, but there's no community and its a massive pain to set up an old xbox for a few games, not to mention dealing with the horrible old controllers.

                          Regardless how popular this game is, in 5 years no one will be playing it, which is a dam shame.

                          It wouldn't. I'm certain that more than 90% of their sales don't come from PC players. And you would need an extremely powerful PC just to emulate games like TLOU on a PS4 emulator at 60fps. Power that we probably don't have at our disposal right now.

                            there is no need to emulate PS4 hardware. same instruction sets, same GPU tech. and some hackers have proved that AMD's Linux drivers work almost as-is on it, with full 3D acceleration potential.

                            but to get games running involves replacing a metric fuckton of proprietary middleware and APIs that Sony is keeping under locks and will never let anybody reverse engineer. any such endeavor would be equal to the Wine project in scope, but even harder to accomplish and most likely bombarded with frivolous lawsuits. at least, with Microsoft Windows, you have access to a hefty amount of public documentation.

                            10 years strikes me as an optimistic estimation.

                            I have never heard of this Cytoix fellow and Google brings up nothing.

Developers sell away their souls because Sony/Microsoft offers them financial support so that they can develop for their expensive platform.                               By buying a console to play hostage exclusive games, you are voting with your wallet in favor of more games being made exclusive in order to sell consoles.

                              It's not an issue for me to afford a console, I simply don't want to own any of them because I don't need them for their hardware, and playing games on a console will be inconvenient, and a strictly worse experience for me.

                              I'd rather wait for 10 years or never get to play those games than support what I hate with my money.

                              No, for several reasons.

                              Games that require keyboard and mouse generally don't belong on consoles. You can release such a game on consoles, but almost no one will play it.

                              Games that require powerful hardware to run decently, though there are not that many of those.

                              For indies, developing and publishing games for consoles is way more of a PITA than on PC. For PS4 you need a development kit that costs over $2K (xbox doesn't need that), and there's way more bureaucracy involved in releasing than on PC.

                              There's a difference between not releasing a game on a platform because you got paid to do so and not releasing a game on a platform because it makes no sense or you just don't have the resources to do it.

                              For AAA games it pretty much never makes sense to not release on all major platforms since the cost of porting a game will be small compared to the cost of the rest of the game, and compared to potential revenue from an entire platform.

                              A lot of these console exclusives are playable movies. Great stories that use gameplay as a secondary thing to get you engaged in the story, and once the story's over there's no point in playing anymore.

                              Not worth buying a console just for that game, when you can get just as much out of it just by watching a playthrough of it.

                              I have it and am Playing it on PS4 Pro at "4K".

                              There are some substantial framedrops here and there but overall it's a good experience. And you can drop it to 1080 and get higher FPS if you wish.

                              I also have a high powered PC of course, but this game is truly stunning and a helluva lot of fun.
