Yup. Not a right-wing issue, a woman's issue.

If for no other reason that it is a LIABILITY issue. Men rape and sexually harass women and can do it in places where women are most vulnerable.

I don't think vulnerability is nearly as important as the fact that there are a host of fetishes that revolve around bathrooms (not that anyone wants to acknowledge common fetishes).

It's a matter of "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure".

Of course. No sane person would want otherwise.

Why should women and kids have to face men who are seriously unstable and suffer harm from these men because women and kids are valued less than some man's ego/fetishistic cravings?

I've never met an ordinary person in real life who thought men's fee-fees were enough to permit them to use women's facilities of any sort.

This poll is being widely shared by conservative and right-wing sites today. This page has the questions asked plus a breakdown by party affiliation, sex and other factors which I found interesting.

[–]Abiogeneralization[🍰] 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Doesn't that ruin the poll's validity?

[–]LilianH[S] 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

How so?The group that conducted the poll are a trusted organisation and their methods and the questions asked are in the link I provided above. I check both before posted specifically to ensure it wasn't a biased poll.

The whole bathroom thing doesn't really bother me. It'd be weird, but there are stalls. Men's washrooms would be a bit more awkward I think, since they are actually exposed. I think that the whole bathroom thing is just a red herring to get into locker rooms to change. We will be told that locker rooms are the same as bathrooms and that we should just accept it or be bigots. I want nothing to do with a transwoman who still has a penis changing in front of me at a swimming pool. I can't imagine that 12 and 13 year old girls would be pleased about dicks being twirled about either. Post-op, no problem, but penises don't belong in women's changing rooms.

I didn't used to care that much about this issue either.

But then i educated myself about the history of public women's toilets and how significantly they have impacted women's integration into public life (and, it follows, into leadership roles, etc).

If our race and societies were different than they are, if male/female was a divide as benign as green eyes/blue eyes in Europe, this wouldn't be the issue it is. But one half of the species is generally more physically powerful and generally more likely to sexually harass and rape, while the other is more easily exploited reproductively and sexually.

In patriarchy, I believe sex segregated spaces are critical to women's liberation, so why shouldn't they begin in the places we arrange our clothes in front of the mirror, take time seeing to our menstrual needs, etc?

Also, since then I've delved a lot deeper into antifeminism of male appropriation of female experience and biology and the principle of sex segregated bathrooms is critically important, even for physically very large and strong women.

I feel like I'm the only rad-leaning feminist who just doesn't care about the bathroom thing

Maybe if you ever got assaulted by men in women's bathrooms (twice, like I have), you'd care more.
