Considering Koeman has expressed interest in Rooney going back to Everton, how do you lads feel about a Lukaku swap? (self.reddevils)

While Zlatan is our target man for now, he's very likely not gonna be around for longer than next season. Until then, we could play Lukaku as the classic box center forward and Zlatan (who prefers to drift around anyway) in a more free role. Lukaku is a beast, 6 ft 3, maybe the best jostler in England and is a consistent goalscorer. At a club like United he'd be a 25 gps man, I'm sure.

I know, Lukaku probably has a price tag of at least 50 million, and I doubt Everton would accept a straight swap for a man turning 32 with a rather big question mark hanging over his head. Thoughts?

EDIT: When I said "I doubt Everton would accept a straight swap" I of course mean that we'd have to sweeten the deal. Wasn't it clear?

Lukaku is a proven PL man, so of course we'd be throwing a pile of money into the mix as well. I doubt Everton fans believe they can really hold onto a class striker like Lukaku if European Top 10 clubs come calling. Their chance of making Champions League is very slim considering the competition these days, and if he really wants to go, it's a clusterfuck to fight it.

Lukaku is just about to sign a new contract with a ridiculous buyout clause, there is no way they will be interested in even discussing him when they ask about Rooney.

Also as long as Zlatan signs his extension we can hold off signing a striker for another season. DM, LB, RB are bigger priorities.

Well, if he hasn't signed it yet and hears about our interest, maybe things would change. Everton are a decent team but let's face it, the competition from the top 6 makes CL exceptionally hard to reach for them. I'm sure he'd be tempted and would hear us out if a deal was in the cards.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't sign a new one but Raiola has been saying it's 99% done for a while now, he only said 99.999% the other day after they kept pushing him to say it was signed.

I think anyone would swap an aging striker for a young strong striker. I think we would only really get 10-15m off from Rooney.

The last part was meant to indicate that we probably would have to sweeten the deal, so yeah, there's definitely a discrepancy in price to account for.

If we want to be a team that wins the league and challenges for champions leagues, I honestly don't think Lukaku is good enough. Or at least not good enough yet

I think he is class up front but not 100% our system fits him perfectly. Now, I'm not suggesting we should give them Rooney and 80 million, but if he's interested in moving up the ladder, maybe Rooney and 30 mill?

you still want to pay them 30m for him despite not fitting our system well? That's just stupid business on any level going by the stance that, hey he doesn't fit us perfectly I think, but he wants to move up so let's dump money to get him.

I'd much rather us pay much more for someone who does fit well and the manager wants instead. Anytime. Or less for someone who's a fit but there to add value instead of being a potential starter. Either way, just someone who is a great fit instead because this is where you get the Madrid galacticos from before where they had the best names but never performed to that level as they hardly won stuff back then despite making record signings.

In the meantime, barcelona, bayern and other clubs sign players who fit their system perfectly.

Every time I hear someone suggest a swap someone shoots it down saying swaps never happen. I really hope one day that it does happen just so that person can STFU.

Also, GTFO, swaps never happen.
