Manchester United equal Liverpool's trophy haul with EFL Cup win
By winning the EFL Cup with a victory over Southampton, Manchester United have drawn level with Liverpool with the most major trophies won by an English club.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the two clubs have each won 41 competitive trophies, with United claiming the EFL Cup for the fifth time with the 3-2 victory on Sunday.
Man United's 41st major trophy ties Liverpool for most by an English club.

Despite United's victory, Liverpool still hold the advantage in the EFL Cup, having won the competition eight times -- the last in 2012.
United could surpass Liverpool's championship haul before the end of the season as they remain in both the FA Cup and the Europa League, while Liverpool's sole focus is now on the Premier League.
Most major trophies won by English clubs:
Competition | Man Utd | Liverpool |
---|---|---|
League | 20 | 18 |
FA Cup | 12 | 7 |
League Cup | 5 | 8 |
Europe | 4 | 8 |
Total | 41 | 41 |
Includes domestic league and cups and UEFA tournaments |
Three of Liverpool's European trophies were won in the UEFA Super Cup, which United have claimed just once. European football's governing body lists that one-off match, between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League, as a competitive trophy.
However, the FA doesn't do the same with its traditional season-opening showpiece, the Charity/Community Shield. United have the advantage there, winning the match between the reigning league and FA Cup holders 21 times compared to Liverpool's 15.
The two clubs are also in contention to win the Premier League -- though that may be difficult, considering Chelsea start the week 10 points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur with 12 fixtures remaining.
