Do Australians really get mad if American tourists ask them to accept US currency?

No madder than if people try and pay with any other type of currency, bottle caps, rubber bands or milk bottle tops. It's not money here, don't try and use it.

Our friends from Sydney say that Americans ask that question a lot and many folks "down under" resent it.

Only time I've ever seen it is at a small local market, and they very rightly got told to "pay with real money or go away".

why (other than American arrogance) does it happen so frequently?

That's the only reason I can think of it for it to happen, laziness and arrogance.

Finally, why is it so irritating to the local populace?

Well, would it be irritating to you if I went to America and insisted to accept my Australian currency?

It's not legal tender in this country, and shouldn't be expected to be treated as such, by anyone.

I'd put a caveat on that, in that if the invoice paid was sufficient enough that the trip to a currency exchange made it worth it. Ie they paid a $200Au bill in $200US.

If they paid $500US for a $200 AUD bill, I'm pretty sure there'd be no arguments. At the moment.

People actually go to a different country and try to use foreign currency?

Yes, they're called americans.

US currency is used in loads of countries where people don't trust their own currency due to inflation or political instability.

Vanuatu takes Aussie dollars

Is this a satirical question? Are Americans really this dumb? They would lose out on money even if it was accepted.

Yeah, they are. And the only thing sadder is the people they're trying to use their $ at haven't worked out that they could scam them for a fortune. Actually, I think it's sweet. We're still too lazy to bother taking money that's worth more and getting exchanged cos, hassle.

That's the first thing that popped in my head. Unless they want to get technical and try to give us what our dollar is worth. I'd be like na sorry consider it a tax.

That moment when an American realises there are places outside of the US.

Why the hell would someone go to another country and try to use their own currency? That is absurd!

think bordertown Mexico (the only Mexico most Americans see) where US currency is gladly accepted.

Yeah we don't exactly share a border with you mate

Sounds like tourists who are used to visiting places where the US dollar is used as a de facto currency.

We are not one of those places.

Yes It literally takes 5 minutes to change it at the airport.

Seems like an American expectation that they can pay for their goods with US dollars in a sovereign nation and yet THEY are the ones that get offended when told they can't.

How about your friends not be tightasses and convert their currency to Australian dollars instead

Too lazy to go to a bank and exchange it for Australian currency?

Too much chance of getting stiffed with counterfeit currency.

Rarely.

Why should we, we are not a third world country that holds the US dollar as manna from heaven.

Americans also think $10 US would pay for something worth $50 , because you know they're Americans and it's their right, why should they have to use local currency, and why isn't their money worth at least 5 time more here.

This has never happened to me before so I'm not quite sure how I'd react. It would certainly be strange though.

Australia isn't like asia, I have seen very very few places that will accept us dollars. Oddly enough yen and chinese currency would be more acceoted than US dollars

We aren't business minded enough perhaps? Personally I think it would be good customer service to accept USD. It would of course be at a rather poor rate but they have the option of going to the bank themselves.

i'd have no problems with taking american currency, so long as they didn't expect any sort of exchange rate with it

after all, $US100 is worth a little more than $A100, and the difference would compensate for any inconvenience i faced in having to deal with the foreign currency

those yanks who do expect us to accept greenbacks are probably confusing australia with many other third world countries where greenbacks are preferred to the local currency, due to local inflation devaluing their own currency

How mad would Americans get if Australians tried to pay in America with Australian dollars?

Businesses would definitely get annoyed, since they'll have to do the changing. An American complaining that they can't use US currency would reek of arrogance, and that doesn't go down well here.

What kind of dumb cunt carries cash when they're traveling anyway?

It doesn't happen very often if at all. No australian would accept payment in USD without a significant premium, because we can't buy anything with that currency, we have to go to the bank and exchange it.
