What happened with Mata today? (self.reddevils)

I heard the commentator say just before the second half that his thoughts are with mata who has to return to Spain for family reasons. He was taken off at half time which made this look true. But he was there afterwords in the celebrations.

His grandfather passed away a few days ago.

He was attending his beloved grandfathers funeral. That's mainly why he was subbed off, I can imagine he wasn't really in the best headspace today.

He looked distracted and wasn't good in the first half (probably due to the family issues), so Jose subbed him off and brought Carrick in to get more control of the match.

I think it would have happened anyway as there was so much space in front of our defence by the end of the first half that carrick usually fills. But yeah must be pretty awful to have to play with a family death weighing on your mind like that.
